Celebrities pretty much have no privacy these days. If a famous person wants any sort of a private life, they'll have to go to extreme measures to get it. Getting recognized and having your photo taken is all a part of being a celebrity, but how would you feel if you could never shut that off? When some celebs have children, they feel that it is not fair to subject their children to the limelight when it is not something that they have chosen for themselves.
The celebs chose to be celebs, but their children were just born into it. It can be hard to raise children when there's paparazzi constantly swarming your house, stalking and harassing you for a good photo — just ask Jennifer Garner, who fought to enforce stricter paparazzi laws in California. Sure, we love to see celebrity kids like Kim Kardashian's daughter, North West, all dressed up in designer duds and looking cute, but is that what is in the child's best interest?
Some celebs, like Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, just wanted to give their children a semi-normal upbringing, without the pressure or public scrutiny, so they packed up their Hollywood home and moved to a farm in upstate New York. Other celebrities, like The Handmaid's Tale actress, Alexis Bledel, is so secretive about her child that we didn't even know he existed until months after he was born, and we still don't know his name or have a photo! Being a parent is hard, but being a celebrity parent is harder. Here are 15 celebs who try to keep their kids away from the press.
15 Blake Lively
Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds are one of the most beloved celebrity couples right now. Part of the reason that people are so fascinated with this seemingly happy couple is that we don't actually know that much about their private life, which just makes us curious to know more. Blake Lively has starred in some semi-successful films like The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, The Shallows, and The Age of Adeline, but she is mostly known for her lead role in the hit series, Gossip Girl. In 2012, she married Ryan Reynolds, who is known for his leading roles in Deadpool, Green Lantern, Just Friends, and The Proposal.
When they aren't busy starring in hit films or TV shows, this couple likes to lay low. They are not fans of being followed by the paparazzi themselves, so they definitely do not want a life like that for their children, James and Inez.
In fact, the celebrity couple does not even live in Hollywood anymore. After getting married, they packed up and moved to a quiet farm in upstate New York and started a family. Reynolds told The Project (via People), "We don't live in L.A. We live on a farm in New York. And we don't lead a wild and crazy life." Lively revealed to Marie Claire in 2016, "Ryan had a nice, normal upbringing, and we want our kids to have the same normal life that we had. We don't ever want to rob them of what we had because then we'd feel really selfish."
14 Eva Mendes
Fans of The Notebook may have wished that Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams' relationship would have lasted, but the truth is, the actor moved on with Eva Mendes some time ago— around seven years, to be exact. However, the extremely private couple has not even publicly commented on their relationship, let alone the fact that they now have two children together. There have been no birth announcements, no photo ops, and no public statements. Basically, we know nothing about them— and that's just how they'd like to keep it.
On the rare occasion that the paparazzi capture the couple out with their children, we may catch a glimpse of them, but that's about it. When Eva was pregnant with their first daughter, Esmerelda, they decided that they would do whatever they could to keep their children away from the press.
Mendes told Violet Grey, "Whether we like it or not, privacy is going to be very difficult for Esmeralda. I think it's unfair but that's our reality. So Ryan and I decided early on to give her as much privacy as we could. And my pregnancy was the first opportunity to give her that." The actress decided to “eject” herself from the public scrutiny completely during her pregnancy, saying, "I was like, 'Annnnd I'm out.'"
Unless you are a big fan of Adele's, you may not even be aware that she has a child. The singer rarely speaks about her son, Angelo, whom she had with her husband, Simon Konecki. Did you even know that she has a husband? Adele keeps her personal life so under wraps that the only chance you'll get to see her beautiful family is if the paparazzi happen to catch a photo of them in public— and she doesn't even let that happen often. In fact, if you snap a shot of her son, you may even get sued.
In 2014, the "Chasing Pavements" singer's then-2-year-old son was awarded a five-figure payout after Adele and Konecki filed a lawsuit against Corbis Images UK.
A lawyer for the press told a court in London, "It is a matter of profound sadness that many of his milestone moments, such as his first family outing and his first trip to playgroup, were photographed and published worldwide expressly against his family's wishes. According to The Guardian, "Adele and Simon never encourage such photos. Quite the opposite. The parents' view is that these images were of routine, everyday family occasions which the paparazzi has no right to intrude upon, profit from and file away in picture libraries for future reference and use."
Now, Angelo's got this money waiting for him in a trust to use when he comes of age. Although, he would have been fully set for life just for being Adele's kid.
12 Kelly Clarkson
After Kelly Clarkson won American Idol, her life changed forever. Now, she is a top-selling musician, who tours the world and is changing lives. She was even a coach on the singing competition series, The Voice, this year. She won over the hearts of the audience with her funny, charming personality. In 2013, Kelly's life changed again forever— she married Brandon Blackstock, a music manager. In fact, Blackstock is Blake Shelton's music manager, who happens to be Kelly's fellow judge on The Voice. Small world, right?
Anyway, Blackstock actually already had two children from a previous marriage, so Kelly jumped right into being a stepmom when she got married, but later on, the two decided that they were ready to have kids of their own. They welcomed their daughter, River Rose, in 2014 and their son, Remington Alexander, in 2016. The singer experienced very tough pregnancies with both of her children, so after her son was born, she said, "Oh God, those tubes are gone!" and had her tubes tied, according to KTU's Cubby and Carolina in the Morning. Clarkson knows what it is like to be thrust into the spotlight, and she doesn't want that for her children, so she'll keep them away from the media as much as she can.
11 Leighton Meester
Leighton Meester and Adam Brody's relationship makes teens from the 2000's hearts melt with joy. I mean Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girl and Seth Cohen from The O.C. actually ending up together in real life— could there be a more picture-perfect couple? Unfortunately, this picture-perfect celebrity couple wants nothing more than not to have their pictures taken. The two actors have had a pretty private relationship since they started dating and eventually married in 2014.
Their daughter, Arlo Day Brody, was born in 2015, which would currently make him two years old. When she was born, it was not even reported until two months after the fact, so clearly, they are not into sharing with the public.
We really haven't seen much of this kid— there was definitely no big baby introduction via social media or a magazine cover— and it doesn't seem like we are ever going to. This kid is being kept under wraps. In 2017, Meester told Refinery29, "I am very proud of that area of my life. But I'm also really proud of the show, and of the work I do." Adding, "I think the perception is: You're an ingénue, or you're an icon, or you're a mom. There's no in between."
10 The Rock's Wife, Lauren Hashian
Did you know that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has three daughters? He'll share some family photos on Instagram from time to time, but you will rarely ever catch him getting papped with his kids. He had his first daughter, Simone, with his ex-wife, Dany Garcia. She is 16 years old now and is already transforming into a beautiful young woman. Although she has appeared on a few red carpets here and there with her famous father, she has remained relatively out of the spotlight, in order to enjoy a semi-normal upbringing. Many people do not even know that Johnson has been with the same woman for the last 11 years. He rarely talks about his personal life, but yet, he still seems so personable— how does he do it?
Dwayne has been in a long-term, committed relationship with a woman named Lauren Hashian. In 2015, the couple welcomed a daughter, Jasmine, followed by another daughter, Tiana, just recently in 2018. People really seem to love that the Moana voice actor and his partner chose Disney princess names for both of the girls. Will the girls eventually follow in their father's footsteps to become superstars in their own right?
Or will they enjoy a quieter, more normal life? Luckily, The Rock and Lauren are giving them the privacy to be able to choose for themselves.
9 Miranda Kerr
The supermodel, Miranda Kerr, and the actor, Orlando Bloom made one good looking couple while they were still together, but their relationship wasn't a total waste— they got one good looking baby. Unfortunately, Orlando and Miranda divorced in 2013, after only three years of marriage. The two of them are now co-parenting their son, but it seems they have both agreed to try and keep him out of the press as much as possible. Orlando will often post photos on social media with his son, but he will usually try to hide his face (at least, partly.)
Fans won't really find any photos of Flynn on Miranda's Instagram page, except for one photo that looks like it was taken at Halloween, but all of the children's faces are covered with costumes, so you can't even see which one is hers.
Miranda Kerr actually just gave birth to another son, Hart, with her new husband, Evan Spiegel, less than a month ago. It's likely that she won't be posting any photos of her new baby on Instagram for her fans to see anytime soon— if ever. Her husband, Evan Spiegel, is the co-founder and CEO of Snap Inc. and he lives a fairly private life as well, so surely, the couple will be on the same page with this.
8 Megan Fox
Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green have been together for a long time. They got married in 2010, but they had been dating for a long time before that— on and off. Green is, perhaps, most well-known for his role in Beverly Hills, 90210. He's worked on some television shows and a few movies but nothing major. And despite the fact that Megan Fox is known as one of the most attractive actresses in the world, she is not exactly an award-winning actress, with films like Transformers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Jennifer's Body. No one is saying that these movies were bad or that her acting was not great, just that she was not exactly winning Oscars.
The couple went on to have three sons together — Noah Shannon, Bodhi Ransom, and Journey River. It is pretty rare that the actress will ever share photos of her family on social media, so the only time you are going to get a sneak peek at this celeb's personal life is when the paparazzi capture them in public.
Outside of appearing in a few episodes of the series, New Girl, in 2016 and 2017, Megan has not really been seen in Hollywood much, as of late. She is set to appear in a few films in the upcoming year, according to IMDB, but do not expect her children to be posing on the red carpet at the film premieres.
7 Sandra Bullock
Sandra Bullock was married to Jessie James from 2005 until 2010. Unfortunately, that marriage did not have a happy ending because the actress found out that her husband was being unfaithful. Bullock had always wanted to have children and she was not going to let anything or anyone get in the way of that— so she adopted. She now has a son, Louis Bardo Bullock, who is eight and a daughter, Laila Bullock, who is six.
It is extremely important for Sandra to protect her children and their privacy, so much so that she has compared it to being in the witness protection program. In 2015, she told People that while she was still fostering her daughter, Laila before she could adopt her, the paparazzi were trying to publish a photo of her in the tabloids.
Bullock revealed, "It was dangerous because you are asked to sign a confidentiality agreement stating that you will not release any photos of the child to a third party to protect their identity—and here I found myself in a position where her identity could be revealed." She added, "I was sure she would be taken away. The one person who should be protecting her above all else had put her in harm's way." She added, "Most foster children are in foster care because they were taken from their birth homes under tragic circumstances—and the last thing I wanted was to bring more harm to her because of the nature of my job."
Sandra even told Glamour that she would do whatever it took to keep her kids out of the press, announcing, "You come after my son, I'm gonna go postal."
6 Kerry Washington
In 2013, the starring woman of the hit series, Scandal, Kerry Washington, married the former football player, actor, and producer, Nnamdi Asomugha. We hardly know anything about this celebrity couple, as they have remained tight-lipped from day one. In fact, Kerry rarely makes the tabloid headlines for anything at all— she stays out of it altogether. People did not even know that she got married for some time after because she completely hid it from everyone except for her close friends and family.
So, really, it should come as no surprise that there are hardly any photographs of Kerry and her husband with their two children. They welcomed their first daughter, Isabelle Amarachi, in 2014 and their son, Caleb Kelechi, in 2016. Washington did her best to keep her first pregnancy a secret and even managed to hide her birth for a while, with TMZ reporting the news nearly two weeks after she had the baby.
The Scandal star told Marie Claire, "Earlier in my career I was much more super-sharey. There were moments when I wanted to process things that were happening to me more privately, and I didn't have the space to do it, because once you let people in, they're in and you don't get to say, 'Oh, I want this for myself.'"
5 Jennifer Garner
The actress, Jennifer Garner, and the actor, Ben Affleck, may have split up, but that does not mean that they are not still stuck with each other for life— they have three children together, after all. One thing is for sure, the parents of Violet, Samuel, and Seraphina are definitely on the same page about keeping their kids out of the spotlight. In 2013, Garner began fighting for stricter paparazzi laws in California, joining celebrities like Halle Berry. She has testified before the Assembly Judiciary Committee to explain how difficult it is to protect her children while she is being harassed by paps who are just concerned with getting a good shot.
She revealed, via The Hollywood Reporter, "Literally every day there are as many as 15 cars of photographers waiting outside our home. In the course of our ordinary day—trips to school, pediatrician, ballet or the grocery store—paparazzi swarm. Large aggressive men swarm us, causing a mob scene, yelling, jockeying for a position, crowding around the kids." She added, "My 17-month-old baby is terrified and cries. My 4-year-old says, 'Why do these men never smile? Why do they never go away? Why are they always with us?'"
That same year, according to E! News, a new law was passed that would "increases the possible punishment for harassing celebrity kids—and clarifies the legal definition of harassment in such cases."
4 Kate Hudson
Kate Hudson is a super well-known actress who has starred in hit films like How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days, Almost Famous, Bride Wars, Almost Famous, Fool's Gold, and Something Borrowed. However, the actress is not known for sharing much of her personal life. While she does share the occasional photo of her children on social media, she has tried to keep them out of the press as much as possible. Kate currently has two sons with two different men. She has Ryder Robinson, her 14-year-old son with her ex-husband, Chris Robinson, and she also has her 6-year-old son with her ex-boyfriend, Matt Bellamy, Bingham Hawn Bellamy.
Kate will occasionally bring her sons along to her red carpet appearances, but there has not been a ton of media attention on them throughout their childhood.
The 39-year-old actress is currently expecting a third child with her boyfriend, Danny Fujikawa. She has shared photos on her Instagram of her growing baby bump. The couple is excited to be having a girl, with Danny telling People, "I was happy. I was teary-eyed because I know how badly she wanted a girl." It will be interesting to see how much of her new child's life she will be willing to share with the rest of the world.
3 Julia Roberts
Julia Roberts has been in a lot of successful films— from Pretty Woman to Notting Hill, and Erin Brockovich to Wonder— she's definitely a leading lady. However, Julia Roberts is not one of those celebrities who keeps their fans up to date on what's going on in their personal lives. She is much more of a private person when it comes to her family, and she is not willing to compromise.
Roberts married the cinematographer, Daniel Moder, in 2002, after a failed short-lived marriage to Lyle Lovett, which only lasted two years. Julie and Daniel have three children together— Hazel, Phinnaeus, and Henry. The family lives a quiet life away from the Hollywood spotlight, which is only occasionally interrupted by nosy paparazzi. In fact, the Erin Brockovich actress has become quite the soccer mom— and she wouldn't have it any other way. Julia told USA Today, "We try to protect our kids. We just want to have our family life and not have that intruded upon." This means that when she is with her family, the actress will refuse to sign autographs. The family also vacations in secluded places, like a ranch in New Mexico, to avoid being photographed or harassed by the press.
2 Alexis Bledel
Alexis Bledel may have a role in one of the most-talked-about television series, The Handmaid's Tale, but she is not one to seek attention outside of work. Most of us recognized Alexis Bledel from Gilmore Girls back in the day, but we do not know too much about her personal life at all. She met her husband, Vincent Kartheiser, while she was guest starring in the series, Mad Men, back in 2011. It was a year before they would make their first public appearance as a couple, with Vincent telling Vulture, "We were completely professional. We never saw each other out."
In 2013, she was sporting a shiny engagement ring and in the summer of 2014, the celebs wed in a quiet, exclusive ceremony in California. By 2016, the couple had shocked everyone because they welcomed their first child in secret! This is pretty hard to do in today's society, with social media and the paparazzi around every corner. Since then, we have heard absolutely nothing. I mean, we know that she had a son, but they have not even told us what his name is! There are no photos of the child on the internet, and, we can assume, there will not be any time soon.
1 Keira Knightley
Keira Knightley is known for her roles in films like Bend It Like Beckham, Atonement, Love Actually, and The Pirates of the Caribbean. However, she has never been an "in your face" type of celebrity, she rarely makes the tabloid headlines, and is hardly even spotted out by the paparazzi. In 2013, she married the musician, James Righton. After keeping the name of their daughter a secret for two months after she was born in 2015, the couple finally confirmed that they had welcomed their baby girl, Edie Knightley Righton, into the world.
Although Keira has talked about her daughter a bit publicly, there are hardly any photos of the child online. In fact, many paparazzi photos even have the baby's face blurred out. She joked that now that her child is three years old and is learning to speak, they are "having to be really careful" about what they say because she is repeating them, revealing, "I brought her into bed and she’s like this watching the television completely silently and totally still for about four minutes and she rolls over onto her back and she closes her eyes and she goes [...]! I'm very proud."
Most recently, the couple was spotted making a rare public appearance in France for Paris Fashion Week this past March, The Daily Mail reported. As expected, their little one was not with them.
