10 Celebrities Who Suffer From A.D.D.

People who have Attention Deficit Disorder (A.D.D) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (A.D.H.D) have a very difficult time staying on task, procrastinate and have a tough time paying attention. Children with A.D.D. generally have difficulty in school and with learning. Although it is extremely difficult for a child to cope with his/her symptoms of A.D.D, there are many things that can be done in order to help them. On the other hand, it may be a little harder for adults who suffer with the disorder. Adults who suffer from A.D.D. may forget appointments, make careless mistakes and get distracted easily. Often, this can lead to depression, anxiety and obsessive behaviour. It's quite common for people who have A.D.D. to also have varying levels of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (O.C.D). Just like anyone else, some of the most famous and recognizable celebrities also have A.D.D. Learning how to deal with their A.D.D. has possibly been a part of the reason they're successful. On an impulse, famous Canadian comedian Howie Mandel revealed during an interview that he had A.D.D., A.D.H.D and O.C.D. Apparently, he immediately regretted revealing that to the world, until he realized that many people could relate and also suffer from the same issues. As a teenager, he was expelled from high school after impersonating a member of the school board and approving additions to the school. He then broke into stand up comedy in Toronto and would become one of the biggest stand up comics in the 80's. He rose to fame as Dr. Wayne Fiscus in 1982, on the hit series St. Elsewhere. He also created and voiced the main character in the animated series Bobby's World and voiced Gizmo in Gremlins. During a time when he was considering quitting showbiz, he was offered the role of host on the game show, Deal or No Deal which has gone on the become an international success. He is now a judge on America's Got Talent. He has appeared on shows like Live With Regis and Kelly to discuss his A.D.D. and his efforts to bring more awareness to it.

Famous singer-songwriter, Avril Lavigne has struggled with A.D.H.D since she was a child. In school, she was kicked out of her classes several times for disturbing others and for misbehaving. Despite this, her parents where very supportive of her talents. At the young age of 15, Avril won a contest and she sang on stage with Shania Twain. She released her first album, Let Go at 17 and that would be her big breakthrough. She has had several hit singles including; Complicated, My Happy Ending and Girlfriend. She continues to be one of the best selling female artists of all time.

Surely, not too many people are surprised that the highly energetic comedian, Jim Carrey has A.D.H.D. In the early part of his career, he had so much energy that he was bouncing off of walls…literally. He has openly discussed having A.D.H.D. and he has also struggled with depression. As a child, his family was extremely poor, going as far as living out of a van. He was forced to drop out of school at 15 and take a job as a janitor to help his family financially. During that time, he attempted stand up comedy but bombed very badly and began to have doubts about his talent. He returned years later, once his family life was more stable and would become one of the best known stand up comics in Toronto. His big breakthrough came when he was cast on the hit sketch comedy series, In Living Color. This led to roles in massively successful films such as; Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask and Dumb and Dumber. He won two Golden Globe Awards for his roles in The Truman Show and Man On the Moon. He has also appeared in more serious films such as, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Apartment 23. Jim Carry is considered one of the biggest stars in Hollywood.
