What better way to show off that you have plenty of cash in the bank than to drive around in a super-expensive supercar? If money is no object, then why not buy one of the most expensive cars in the world? Perhaps the $4.8-million Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita, if you have that kind of cash sitting in your bank account.
Plenty of celebrities are famed for their love of fast cars and all things petrol-powered. Jay-Z drives an $8 million Maybach Exelero. As seen in his video for “Lost One,” this sporty little number can reach an impressive top speed of 218mph. Veteran rocker Brian Johnson, lead singer of ACDC, is a huge vintage car enthusiast and has even raced in vintage car rallies around the world. His spectacular car collection includes the sporty 1965 Lola T70 Mark 1–only 15 of these were ever made–and a stylish 2010 Rolls Royce Phantom.
Not every celebrity, however, wants to spend their fortune on fast cars. Some, like those in the list below, are perfectly happy with a simple set of wheels to get them from point A to B. After all, even multi-billionaires need to get to the shops sometimes, and who wants to take the Ferrari to pick up a carton of milk?
15 Mark Zuckerberg’s Acura TSX
Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg, may be worth 77 billion dollars, but that doesn’t mean he wants to spend his fortune on expensive supercars. He’s happy just driving his Acura TSX to and from the office, while other cars in his collection include the family favorite Honda Fit and the classic Volkswagen Golf GTi.
The Acura TSX costs up to $22,000, a (very) tiny fraction of Zuckerberg’s entire fortune.
He does have one luxury item in his car collection, though—a $1.4 million Pagani Huayra sports car. However, this Italian sports car apparently doesn’t get out of the garage much compared to his other vehicles. Maybe he's scared to scratch it.
14 Warren Buffett’s Cadillac XTS
Businessman Warren Buffett may be one of the richest men in the world, with a fortune worth $74 billion, but he is well-known for his frugal living, and that includes his cars. He rarely buys cars, as he does so little driving, and the vehicles he does buy tend to last him for many years.
His current car is a $46,000 Cadillac XTS which he bought in 2014.
His other spending quirks include living in the house that he bought back in 1958 and starts the day with a cheap takeout breakfast from none other than McDonald’s. Perhaps that all goes a long way to explain why he has so much money in the bank.
13 Kirk Cousins Drives A 2000 GMC Savana
Sports stars are generally not known for their restraint when it comes to spending money. These young men (and women) are often earning huge amounts of cash for the first time in their lives, and they tend to go a bit crazy when they get the chance to buy cars and other expensive items. Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins won’t be short of a few dollars,
yet he chooses to drive a 2000 GMC Savana, a car which he bought from his grandmother for $5000.
That is going to look a bit out of place among the supercars driven by the other Redskins players, although it will fit in better than the bicycle ridden to training by his former teammate, Alfred Morris!
12 Alice Walton, Heiress Of Walmart, Drives A Ford F150 Truck
The name Alice Walton may not be as familiar as some of the other celebrities on this list, but when we tell you what she's known for, you'll no doubt be familiar with how she makes her fortune. The heiress to the Walmart fortune has a massive net worth of almost $50 billion. Like the bargains you find in her Walmart stores, however, Walton prefers to keep things cut price when it comes to her wheels, driving a Ford F150 truck, just like her father before her. Alice Walton has a tricky relationship when it comes to driving, though. She has been involved in three accidents, including one in 1989 where she struck and killed a pedestrian. This might be why she feels safest in her Ford pickup truck.
11 Conan O’ Brien Drove A 1993 Ford Taurus, Then A $36,000 Acura TL
Comedian and talk show host Conan O’Brien may spend his time hanging out with big Hollywood celebrities, professional athletes, and platinum-selling musicians, but
his choice of car is anything but glamorous.
He drove his beloved 1993 Ford Taurus for many years, before eventually conceding that it was finally time for it to be replaced. And what did he replace it with, you ask? Nothing that would break the bank. He purchased a $36,000 Acura TL. Not quite as low key as a battered Ford Taurus, but still a rather cheap buy for a man reported to earn an estimated $12 million every year for his television work.
10 David Spade And His 1987 Buick Grand National
Comic actor David Spade has made a career out of his diminutive stature. Yet for many years, he drove what can only be described as a big car–albeit rather functional–and one that gave its owner plenty of trouble. His choice of wheels was a 1987 Buick Grand National, which he spent years and about $9000 doing up, before eventually selling the ride in 2017 for 33 thousand dollars. Spade’s everyday vehicle is a Range Rover, although he managed to total one SUV in January of 2017, when he was hit by another vehicle running a light on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. Maybe he should stick to Buick...
9 Daniel Radcliffe “ Harry Porter” Drives A Fiat Grande Punto
What kind of car would you expect the one and only Harry Potter to drive? In the movies, he and Ron steal Mr. Weasley’s enchanted Ford Anglia and take it on a joy ride–through the air–when they miss the train to Hogwarts. No such flying wheels for Daniel Radcliffe, the actor who played Harry Potter for about 10 years in the series of films. Despite his massive Hollywood success to date, Radcliffe has kept his feet firmly on the ground,
choosing as his first car a Fiat Grande Punto.
To be fair, this is a very sensible choice for a young driver who has just passed his driving test. It also is likely pretty easy to park... perfect for someone who is inexperienced.
8 Zac Efron’s First Car Was A 1990 Oldsmobile Alero
These days, High School Musical star Zac Efron has a pretty cool collection of Audi cars, including an Audi S6 and a convertible Audi S5. Once upon a time, however, his taste in cars was a lot more pedestrian and a lot less "fancy". His first car was a 1990 Oldsmobile Alero, which he actually kept in his garage long after it became too wrecked to even be driven on the road. Efron actually gave the car away in a 2014 raffle to raise money for the Make-A-Wish foundation. For $10, Zac fans could buy a ticket and win the chance to drive a little bit of Hollywood history. Which High School Musical fan would not want a chance to drive Zac's old car?
7 John Goodman Just Loves His Ford F150 Pickup Truck
Actor John Goodman is known for his rather hefty frame, so he was never going to be at home in a sleek and slim sports car or even a tiny Mini. Instead, the Monsters Inc. star has opted for a much more robust Ford F150 pickup truck, just like our previously mentioned Walmart heiress Alice Walton.
Goodman’s 1997 truck is known to be the apple of his eye,
as well as suiting his rather down-to-earth and humble character. You could even imagine Dan Conner, his character on the long-running sitcom Roseanne, either driving a Ford F150 or at least lusting after one!
6 Clint Eastwood Is Comfortable In His Modest GMC Typhoon
Considered Hollywood royalty for his roles in dozens of Western movies and his successful move into directing Oscar-winning films, Clint Eastwood clearly hasn’t let fame go to his head. In fact, he may have made a movie which took its names from a stylish muscle car–Gran Torino–but Eastwood’s own car is a much more modest affair. The Hollywood star drives a GMC Typhoon, a practical and substantial SUV with a turbo V6 engine,
which was only made in 1992 and 1993.
So, basically Eastwood has been driving the same old car for over twenty years now, and still seems perfectly happy with his wheels. It's the simple things in life...
5 Leonardo DiCaprio Is Loyal To His Hybrid Toyota Prius
Given that Leonardo DiCaprio is almost as well-known for his environmental activism as he is for his major acting career in Hollywood, his choice of vehicles is perhaps not as surprising as some of the others on this list. Leo reportedly owns a fleet of green vehicles,
including a sleek Tesla Roadster electric sports car, hybrid supercar the Fisher Karma, and last but no means least, another hybrid, the popular Toyota Prius.
The Titanic and The Wolf Of Wall Street star seems to use his Prius for most of his day-to-day journeys, preferring its environment-friendly efficiency over the stylish appearance of his other eco-vehicles.
4 Justin Timberlake Once Drove A Volkswagen Jetta
Justin Timberlake may have graduated to a more grownup collection of cars nowadays, including a souped-up Jeep Wrangler, an Audi Cabriolet, and a classic 1960 Pontiac GTO, but once upon a time, his taste in cars was a lot more youthful and fun. The former N’Sync singer actually used to drive a white Volkswagen Jetta,
a $16,000 car
that is more usually bought by fathers for their daughters rather than by up-and-coming Hollywood stars. What better way for a teen icon to appeal to his fans, however, than to be seen driving the same car as them, right?
3 Ingvar Kamprad, Founder Of Flat-Pack Furniture Empire IKEA, Drove A 1993 Volvo
The founder of the IKEA flat-pack furniture empire passed away just recently this year, in January of 2018 at the age of 91, leading to a host of jokes about build-it-yourself coffins. Despite his $54 million fortune, Kamprad was
notorious for living frugally, always flying economy, staying in cheap hotels, and even buying his clothes at flea markets.
By the time he passed away, he was still driving a 1993 Volvo which he bought twenty years ago and only occasionally got behind the wheel of his second car, a Skoda. Perhaps this penny pinching was something that came with age? Well, apparently not. Even in his youth, he was always careful to watch his spending.
2 Steve Ballmer, Current Owner Of NBA Team The Los Angeles Clippers, Drives A $19,000 Ford Fusion
Ballmer is an American businessman and entrepreneur, with a net worth of $39 billion. The former chief executive of Microsoft and current owner of NBA team the Los Angeles Clippers certainly has plenty of money in his bank account, yet he chooses to drive a very modest $19,000 Ford Fusion.
And he didn’t even have to pay for his model,
as he was presented with the millionth Ford Fusion made with a special Microsoft adapter when he was still chief exec of the computer company! Ballmer does have a genuine connection with Ford, though. He is from Detroit and his father used to work at the city’s Ford plant. So we'll give him a pass for choosing to stick with Ford.
1 Mel Gibson Has Owned A Toyota Cressida And A Tiny $12,000 Smart Car
Aussie actor Mel Gibson may have seen his Hollywood career stumble in recent years, but luckily for him, he has always kept his feet on the ground when it came to buying cars. The Braveheart star has been spotted driving around the exclusive California town of Malibu in a battered Toyota Cressida, a particularly unloved and unlovely Toyota model. More recently, in 2012, Gibson was snapped by the paparazzi as he left a Malibu lunch meeting and got into a tiny $12,000 Smart car, a far cry from the $110,000 Maserati supercar he totaled in a 2010 crash. Maybe he learned that if he drives a less valuable car, he won't be as tempted to drive fast and show off?
