15 Of The Richest People In The World (Who Look Like They're Poor)

When people think about what a billionaire or a millionaire looks like, they often conjure up very cartoonish pictures in their minds that seem like Mr. Burns from The Simpsons. We like to imagine them as wearing suits, monocles, with large mustaches, and sneering down on us like the monopoly man. In our minds, they all drive luxury cars, live in mansions, and eat only the finest food. But is this what billionaires are actually like? As you will see in this article, billionaires often reject the stereotypical "rich guy" cookie-cutter mold. They prefer instead to do what feels natural to them, and this can make them look like average dudes.

Sometimes it can seem strange that billionaires would wear such average-looking clothing. But when you think about it, it kind of makes sense. Once you've made a ton of money, you've reached the top. Why would you try to impress people by wearing nice clothes? You literally have no one left to suck up to. So why not wear something comfortable? Why devote any extra thought than you need to towards your choice of clothing? The mega rich are famous for being very focused, devoting their time to their business and not much else. Therefore, why would they waste time on something as stupid as clothing?

But sometimes rich people seem like the average, poor guy because of how they act, not just how they dress. Billionaires have been photographed getting into brawls with each other on the street. Some get kicked out of basketball games because they yell at the officials too loudly. Others are simply comfortable with taking the subway or the bus instead of driving fancy cars. One thing's for sure – you will have a very different perspective on the rich after reading this.

15 Keanu Reeves

via: reddit.com

Keanu Reeves is one celebrity that not only dresses modestly, but also lives very simply. He seems to have a very different attitude about life than many other celebrities and actors today, and many people are surprised when they learn about his lifestyle. He is often seen walking around town by himself, and is frequently seen taking public transit, such as the subway. Memes have been made about Keanu Reeves, including this iconic picture which has been dubbed "sad Keanu."

As you can see, he is not dressed particularly well. He is wearing some normal-looking jeans, and some simple hiking boots. His suit jacket/blazer shows a little bit of class, but that's really the only indication that this man might have some serious cash in the bank. His beard also makes him look like an "average Joe," and if you saw this man on the street without realizing it was Keanu Reeves, you would probably have no idea that he's actually a millionaire.

14 Pewdie Pie

via: youtube.com

Another famously humble millionaire is Pewdie Pie, otherwise known by his real name, Felix Kjellberg. This man is widely considered to be the biggest name on YouTube, and he reached fame by uploading videos of himself playing video games. He has since branched out into more general comedy, often providing social commentary on world events and pop culture, to the point where many now consider him to be a comedian. He is a controversial figure these days, with major news outlets accusing him of all kinds of offensive transgressions.

Whenever he appears in his videos, he is seen wearing very normal clothing, such a simple plain white t-shirt or a casual hoodie. He is also rumored to be incredibly frugal, living a humble lifestyle and not spending crazy amounts of cash on stupid things. When he severed ties with Disney, he cut back on his production costs and now films videos out of a spare room in his apartment. He also rarely goes on vacation. However, if you look closely at many of his clothing items, they are from popular streetwear designer brands such as Raised By Wolves, and many others.

13 Mark Zuckerberg

via: spacenews.com

With a net worth of over 70 billion dollars, Mark Zuckerberg is the fifth-richest person in the world. He is of course the main man who founded Facebook, the gargantuan social media platform that the majority of the world uses. In fact, many less educated people, especially those in first-world countries, believe that Facebook is the internet. He started the company from his dorm room at Harvard, along with a few other Harvard peers. He is still only 33 years of age, and in recent years seems to flirting with even greater aspirations, seemingly setting his sights on politics.

Despite his enormous wealth, Mark Zuckerberg has the appearance of a normal millennial. If you saw him walking down the street and had no idea who he was, you'd probably peg him as some college graduate. And Zuckerberg purposely cultivates this public image. It is well known that he always wears exactly the same outfit: grey t-shirt with normal jeans. He has also revealed that he and his wife want to give away the majority of their wealth to philanthropic endeavors throughout the course of their lives.

12 Tobey Maguire

Yep, that's Tobey Maguire. The Spiderman star is well-known for many things, and his average dress style is just one of them. He is also one of the best-known vegan celebrities in the world. When he was filming The Great Gatsby, each main cast member was given a brand new Mercedes-Benz as a gift. But Tobey Maguire returned the vehicle because it had leather seats, which is of course against his vegan lifestyle. This shows just how much Maguire rejects the lavish lifestyle that many celebrities embrace, choosing instead to remain true to his core values.

In this picture, it's clear that Tobey Maguire has the appearance of an "average Joe." His plaid shirt and unkept beard have the appearance of an unsuccessful artist, or perhaps even an off-duty construction worker. To top off this thoroughly average look, Maguire carries a lunch box and a metal water bottle. This shows that even at the height of fame and economic success, Maguire is not above bringing his own lunch in order to save money – although this might have something to do with his vegan lifestyle.

11 Scott Farquhar And Michael Cannon-Brookes

VIA: 2gb.com

Scott Farquhar and Michael Cannon-Brookes are considered by many to be "accidental billionaires," a title that these two men carry with fondness. They met at university in Australia, and initially all they wanted to do was avoid working for someone else when they graduated. Their goal was simple – achieve the typical yearly income of $48,000 without having to jump through the many hoops of job applications. So they started their own company, Atlassian. This company grew beyond their wildest dreams, and now these two men are both billionaires and some of the richest men in the world.

But judging from this picture, you would never guess the level of success these two men have achieved. They have the appearance of simple engineers, or even auto shop workers. Their simple t-shirts and hoodies, topped off by tattered baseball caps and unkept beards make them books that people often judge based on their covers. But rest assured – these two are considered some of the biggest names in software right now. And they've also shown their humble side by raising millions of dollars for charity.

10 Nicholas Woodman

via: successstory.com

For those who don't know, Nicholas Woodman is the CEO and founder of GoPro. This man started his business from pretty much nothing, and he had failed completely in his previous efforts to start businesses prior to GoPro. He funded his business from selling shell necklaces, living out of his VW van to save money, and borrowing money from his parents. The early designs of the GoPro camera were simple and uncomplicated, and very far-removed from the kinds of high-end cameras you see today on extreme sports enthusiasts.

As you can see by his manner of dress, Nicholas Woodman never really forgot where he came from. His outfits reflect his origin – a simple California surfer who just wanted to take cool pictures while he was surfing. It's awesome to see that his success hasn't changed who he is. In this picture, he's wearing a normal brown shirt with some simple jeans. He definitely looks like an "average Joe," and you would never suspect his wealth.

9 Dustin Moskovitz

via: forevermogul.com

Mark Zuckerberg didn't build Facebook alone. Far from it. He needed help from people like Dustin Moskovitz, who is regarded as the co-founder of the social media giant. He is actually slightly younger than Mark Zuckerberg, meaning that he won the title of "youngest self-made billionaire," according to Forbes in 2011. He left Facebook in 2008 in order to pursue his own projects, including Asana, an app made to help teams track their work. He was very important to Facebook's development, and he worked hand in hand with the other Harvard students who created it.

Looking at Dustin Moskovitz, you would never suspect that he's actually a billionaire. He looks pretty unassuming with his large sideburns and his frizzy hair. A simple plaid shirt is what he chooses to wear most of the time, with the addition of some simple jeans, as you can see here. To top it all off, Moskovitz wears some simple brown skate shoes that look pretty beat up. But it's not just his appearance that is humble. Moskovitz is also very involved in philanthropy and has donated a lot to charity.

8 Leonardo DiCaprio

via: gg.com

This is one man who needs no introduction, although you might have to look long and hard at this picture before realizing who this actually is. Yes, that is indeed Leonardo DiCaprio. This actor is one of the most successful and famous actors in the world, acting in amazing films that we all know and love. He started out at an incredibly young age in films like Titanic, and is still very active in Hollywood today with films such as The Wolf Of Wall Street. Leonardo has amassed an incredibly large fan base, with people going nuts over him when they see him on the street.

Perhaps that's why Leonardo dresses in such an unassuming manner. After all, the best way to draw attention to yourself is to wear lavish and expensive clothing. Leonardo loves to bike around the city, and he does this by renting bikes. This is evidence of a very modest lifestyle, and is perhaps not what you would expect from a huge star like him. He also wears pretty normal clothing, such as simple shorts and t-shirts, and these days he seems to let his beard grow out to pretty wild levels.

7 Ingvar Kamprad

via: aftonbladet.com

Judging by this picture, you would probably never guess that this old man is one of the richest men in the world. For a while, he was actually the richest man in the world. This is of course Ingvar Kamprad, the founder of Swedish furniture company IKEA. He is worth almost 50 billion dollars, but the official estimates seem to change each year. It's clear however, that he is one of the richest men in the world. The acronym IKEA represents his first and last initial, the first letter of his family farm, and the first letter of a nearby town. He has been involved in business since he was a very small boy, selling matchsticks from his bicycle in his early days.

He is very humble-looking from this picture, and along with his wife, they look like the typical blue-collar retired couple. He is wearing a very simple navy blue coat that looks like it's seen many decades of continuous wear, and underneath his arm he has the signature IKEA blue bag that pretty much everyone has at home. In keeping with his modest lifestyle, whenever Ingvar flies, he travels in economy class with the rest of the "normal people."

6 Amancia Ortega

via: dailymail.co.uk

Amancia Ortega is another unassuming man who is actually incredibly wealthy. He is the man behind Zara clothing, and with a net worth of $80 billion, he is the wealthiest retailer in the world. He is known for his extremely simple lifestyle. He refuses to wear a tie, opting instead for a simple blue shirt and pants. And in case you were wondering, none of these products are made by Zara. On some very rare occasions, he wears a blazer. He is also known for being very private about his lifestyle. Before 1999, not a single picture of him had ever been published. He has given only three interviews to journalists in his entire life. This has led many to write books about this mysterious man, digging into his past.

And as you might have guessed, Amancia comes from a very humble upbringing. His family was not wealthy, and he made his fortune purely out of hard work and determination. He has also donated millions of dollars to charity, most notably the medical industries of his home country, Spain.

5 Vincent Katheiser

via: nytimes.com

Probably the youngest and least wealthy person on this list is Vincent Katheiser. You might recognize him as the star from the hit show Mad Men. But even though he's the least wealthy person on this list, he's definitely no slouch either, with a net worth of about $3 million. Aside from Mad Men, you may recognize him from shows like Angel, in which he plays the character of Connor. As you can see by this picture, Vincent doesn't try to impress anyone by the way he dresses, and looks like the average guy you'd see on the street.

And he never drives, as he revealed in an interview: "I go on the bus, I walk. A friend left his car recently at my house and I took it out one day just for 15 minutes and it was terrible. You know why? I felt like I was back in LA again. Four or five years ago, when I had a car and I had been out of the city I wouldn't feel I was back until I got in the car, you know. But now I feel off the grid. I feel that I am not part of the culture. And because I don't have a car I don't really go anywhere to buy things. In fact, I have been in a slow process of selling and giving away everything I own."

4 Suleyman Kerimov

via: successtory.com

Suleyman Kerimov is another example of a mega-rich guy who loves to live life the simple way. He was born in the former USSR, and lived a pretty bleak life prior to the collapse of communism in Russia. He worked at an electrical plant where he was paid only $250 a month. He lived in a worker's hostel which was attached to the plant with his wife. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, he dabbled in investing, and bought shares in Gazprom. This oil company became hugely successful, and so did Suleyman as a result. He has also been very successful with precious metals mining.

As you can see, Suleyman likes to dress in a pretty simple way. Some regular old jeans and a brown long sleeved shirt is good enough for him, topped off with old, battered baseball cap. He's seen here cheering at a sporting event, which is probably the Russian soccer team he bought. He's also pretty active in philanthropy, donating a lot of his money to charity and other initiatives.

3 Reid Hoffman

via: successstory.com

Here's another man who might not seem that impressive at first glance, but don't be fooled – this man is one of the richest guys in the world. With a net worth of about $3 billion dollars, this founder of LinkedIn is living the dream. Reid Hoffman grew up as a pretty average child, although even at age 12 he was very active in the creation of role-playing games that are now successful. He also apparently farmed maple syrup as a boy in high school, and he got his hands dirty with other pursuits. After spending time in college, Hoffman worked for Apple and PayPal before co-founding LinkedIn.

As you can see by his choice of dress, Hoffman does not use his clothing to show off his wealth. He's a little bit like Mark Zuckerberg in that he usually wears exactly the same thing – a simple polo typically accompanied by some simple khaki pants. Like a lot of people on this list, he also donates a lot to charity and is very active in philanthropy.

2 James Packer And David Gyngell

via: dailymail.co.uk

If you stumbled onto this scene on the streets, you would assume this scene involved two homeless men fighting over loose change on the street, or two drug addicts squabbling over some minor dispute. But it might surprise you to learn that these two men are actually some of the richest men in the world. James Packer is the man in the black cap on top of the man with grey hair being pushed into the grass, who is David Gyngell. James Packer is a resort owner from Australia worth about $4 billion. David Gyngell is a millionaire and CEO of the Nine Network, which owns a string of businesses mostly involved with television.

So why did these two rich men fight? It's even more surprising when you consider that the two men are actually friends, and they once shared an apartment together. According to reports, David Gyngell was the one who showed up and instigated the incident, in response to reports that James Packer had begun dating Miranda Kerr, the Australian supermodel, after leaving his wife.

1 Mark Cuban

via: fortune.com

Mark Cuban is another mega-rich man who seems like the average dude. He's the owner of the Dallas Mavericks, as well as many television and film companies, with a net worth of about $3 billion. He grew up in a very normal family, who was not wealthy. He once sold garbage bags at the age of 12 in order to buy new basketball shoes. A wide range of business investments since leaving college led him to the position he's in right now.

Even though he's incredibly rich, he dresses in a very average manner. Some simple sneakers, regular jeans, and a long-sleeved shirt are all he chooses to wear most of the time. But it's not only his choice of clothing that gives him the appearance of a regular dude. He also screams and shouts at the officials during basketball games, to the point where he is fined significant amounts of money by the NBA. It seems that even though he's a billionaire, he still behaves like the average drunk dude at sports games, yelling his head off and occasionally getting thrown out of the stadium. In addition to his modest lifestyle, Mark Cuban donates to charity and is involved in philanthropy.
