The Hover Hand phenomenon describes a situation where a man who stands close to a pretty woman lets his hands hover over the woman instead of physically touching her. In most cases, the guy seems to be close to the woman he has his arm around, yet somehow his hand hovers away from the woman’s arm, waist or shoulders. It’s as if the man is scared of making physical contact with the woman.
The hover hand can be seen in prom pictures, celebrity pictures and even in pictures of actual couples who are dating. No one is exempt from the hover hand, not even famous celebrities such as Rupert Grint.
Generally, hover hands occur because a guy lacks self-confidence. So in hover hand pictures the guy either appears insecure or it looks as if he doesn’t like the person he is standing next to. Either way, hover hands look ridiculous and the best way to avoid them is to own the situation and just hug the person you are standing next to.
15 Rupert Grint's Hover Hand
Even big stars, such as Rupert Grint, better known for his role as Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter series, are culprits of the hover hand! Here we see Grint attempting to hug the very attractive singer Ariana Grande. However, he is not quite successful – his hand never touches Grande. Instead, it can be seen hovering slightly beside her.
But this is not the first time that Grint has suffered from the hovering hand syndrome. It seems that if a woman is pretty, her age does not matter. Grint will not have the courage to touch her. Let’s just hope that with time he gets over his fear of touching pretty women.
14 Embarrassing Hover Hand
Pictured above is probably one of the most ridiculous hover hand examples you will ever see. The guy in the picture is smiling and he is leaning towards the attractive woman beside him. But... he is not hugging her! The hand that is supposed to touch the woman’s shoulder instead hovers about 10 centimeters above the woman's shoulder!
You have to admit it looks utterly absurd. Do these men not understand that when these pictures emerge they will look like fools? How hard is it to hug a woman? We bet that the woman in the picture is wondering the same thing.
13 So-Close-Yet-So-Far Hover Hand
Pictured above is another great example of an awkward hover hand. In the picture, we see Aaron Paul, star of the hit series Breaking Bad, hugging a girl. Except that he isn’t actually hugging the girl, at least not properly. In a normal situation, you’d hug someone by placing your hand on their body, be it their waist or their shoulder.
Yet Paul is clearly trying to minimize the amount of physical contact he makes with the girl. He is not hugging her properly in that he is not actually touching the girl’s shoulder with his hand. Instead, the hand is hovering just beside the girl’s shoulder. True, their sides are touching, but that’s probably only because the girl herself stood so close to him.
12 Stuck-In-The-Friend-Zone Hover Hand
Here we see another extremely awkward example of the hover hand. It is obvious that the guy in the picture fancies the girl beside him. Yet he is probably too much of a coward to ask her out, let alone hug her properly.
Instead of putting his hand around the girl properly, as you would in a real hug, the guy’s hand is hovering about 5 centimeters away from the girl’s body. The guy is smiling yet he probably doesn’t feel too comfortable – his other arm is positioned at a strange angle also and his body language conveys the message that he’s feeling awkward.
11 Lance Bass' Hover Hand
The actress and TV personality Danielle Christine Fishel best known for her role in Boy Meets World has also suffered from the Hover Hand. And not with a stranger or a fan, but with her own boyfriend, the singer Lance Bass, on her prom night!
Apparently, Fishel had to ask Bass to prom herself- “When I was a senior in high school I asked my boyfriend at the time if he would go to prom with me, because my boyfriend at the time was Lance Bass. So I had to make sure his schedule would allow for prom. Unfortunately, he told me no, because he was going to Japan and I was so sad."
However, two weeks later Fishel found “three dozen roses in the mail with a card that said, ‘Plans have changed, I’ll be in town. Can I take you to prom? Check yes or no.’ And there were two little boxes!” That’s certainly romantic. But then – why the hover hand?!
10 Face Says "I'm Cool", Body Language Says "I'm Freaking Out"
Above you can see another awkward hover hand example. The guy in the picture looks tough and nonplussed. He is used to having attractive women hanging around him. Or is he? We would have thought so from his facial expression but now that our gaze has dropped slightly we notice that he is not actually hugging the girls beside him.
The guy is clearly trying to hug the girls beside him but once again his hands fail to come in contact with the girls’ shoulders. Instead, his hands hover about 5 centimeters away from the girls’ shoulders. Awkward!
9 Nolan Gould Too Shy To Hug His Onscreen Sisters
When Modern Family premiered in 2009 the Dunphy kids were still children. Sarah Hyland was 18 years old, Ariel Winter was 11 years old, and Nolan Gould was only 10 years old. Now the actors have all grown up but that only means that Gould feels even more awkward around his gorgeous onscreen sisters.
In fact, it is quite obvious that Gould feels extremely awkward and uncomfortable in their presence, so much so that he does not even dare touch them when he is supposed to be hugging them. We get it – the girls are extremely beautiful but how hard is it to just hug them properly?
8 Not Quite A Hug
Here we can see another absurd example of the hover hand phenomenon. A guy and a girl are sitting close together and the guy is clearly attempting to hug her. Only once again, just as in other hover hand cases, his hand doesn’t actually touch the woman.
Instead, it hovers about 5 centimeters away from her. If you’re going to do that, why bother trying to hug her at all? The guy should have simply kept his hands to himself. After all, that is what the woman is doing – she is not pretending to hug the guy.
7 The Most Awkward Hover Hand EVER
As far as hover hands go, this has got to be one of the silliest ever. The guy is smiling in a painful kind of way and his hand, which should be hugging the girl, is as far away as it can possibly be. The hover hand is neither close to the girl’s waist nor her shoulders. It’s as if the guy sees an invisible third person beside the girl and is hugging both the girl and the invisible person.
The girl herself doesn’t look like she wants to be there either – while her face appears happy her body is slouched, showing us that she’d rather be anywhere else but there.
6 Shocked By A Kiss
Another silly hover hand example is pictured above. In the picture, a nerdy looking guy is being hugged and kissed by a very attractive girl. Clearly, the guy is shocked both by the kiss and the hug. He doesn’t know what to do with himself. He tries to hug the girl, albeit unsuccessfully – his hand does not touch the girl. It simply hovers beside her.
We’re sure the girl was hurt and surprised by the lack of emotions that the guy in question showed. She probably wondered: why didn’t he hug me back? We hope she knows she was just too attractive for the guy - he simply had no courage to hug her back.
5 Justin Bieber's Hover Hand
The popular singer Justin Bieber is another celebrity guilty of the hover hand! You might think that because he is so famous, other celebrities would fall victim to the hover hand phenomenon around him. You’d think that his fans would fall victim to the hover hand issue too.
However, that is not the case. It is Justin Bieber himself who fails to properly hug both other celebrities and his fans. In the above picture, we can see Bieber hugging Kim Kardashian. It’s a lovely picture. Or rather, would be a lovely picture, if Bieber actually hugged Kardashian, instead of letting his hand hover over her.
4 A Pathetic Hug
Pictured above is another ridiculous example of the hover hand. The couple in question seem relaxed and happy in each other’s company yet clearly that is not actually the case. Both the woman and the guy are smiling and hugging one another. Yet the guy’s hand never makes contact with the woman’s shoulder.
The guy has extended his hand too far: it looks as if he has miscalculated the width of the woman’s shoulders or else has been duped into thinking there is a third, invisible (and very narrow) person in the picture. We can’t see the woman’s hand but we are sure she is not doing the hover hand thing!
3 Justin Bartha And Zach Galifianakis Also Suffer From The Hover Hand
In the above picture, we can see the stunning actress Heather Graham being carried by actors Ed Helms, Bradley Cooper, Justin Bartha and Zach Galifianakis as they all attend The Hangover screening at Vue Cinema in Leicester Square in London.
However, not all the actors are actually carrying Graham! It seems that both actor Justin Bartha and actor Zach Galifianakis have a hover hand problem! Neither is touching the beautiful actress, an act that must have annoyed Ed Helms and Bradley Cooper to no end seeing that they were expected to do all the hard work. Not that carrying and holding beautiful actresses is hard work.
2 Not Quite A Hug
Above we can see another embarrassing group photo that includes one guy and two girls on either side of the guy. Both the girls and the guy appear happy enough – they are smiling and their body language is not giving away any discomfort.
Yet the guy, who is trying to hug the girls, fails to make any physical contact with them! Just like in many other cases, the guy’s hands are hovering about 5 centimeters away from the girls, even though they are all standing very close to each other and the girls are actually leaning into the guy.
1 Even Ministers Are Shy
Could this picture be any more awkward? The guy is clearly attempting to hug the woman beside him but just like in all the other examples, he fails to actually touch the woman. Instead of hugging her properly, he lets his hand hover over her awkwardly. In this case, the man’s hand is hovering about 5 to 10 centimeters over the woman’s shoulder.
It looks utterly absurd yet both the man and the woman are smiling. Can we all agree that if you’re not going to hug someone it is far better to keep your hands to yourself instead of letting them hover over the other person?
