Intellivision will be stepping back into the console market in 2020 via its all new and affordable release, the Amico.
The console gaming world is an extremely popular, busy, and lucrative one. Every time a new generation of consoles rolls around, there are normally two big players. Sega and Nintendo did battle for years. Nowadays, Sony and Microsoft are the heavy hitters via the PlayStation and Xbox. Nintendo is also still ever-present too, of course, currently with the increasingly popular Switch.
Before any of those huge names waded in and took over, however, there was Intellivision. Intellivision released its very first console back in 1979. You'd have thought with how competitive the market is today, we would never see Intellivision again. Well, that's where you're wrong. Intellivision has announced that it is making a comeback with its brand new console, the Amico.
You can check out the Amico for yourself above courtesy of Gamespot. Tommy Tallarico, Intellivision's CEO, believes the "Amico is our answer to this gaping hole we see within the current video game industry." Tallarico is of the belief that almost all video games nowadays are aimed at hardcore gamers. Complicated titles with hard to work controls unless you are already immersed in the gaming world.
Perhaps the most appealing aspect of the Amico is its projected price point. Intellivision is aiming to sell its new console for somewhere between $149 and $179. To sweeten the deal, the Amico's games will cost between $2.99 and $7.99. The titles available will feature classics from the original Intellivision as well as Atari and Imagic. Plus, upon release, there will be 20 brand new titles available for purchase from the Amico's online store.
When it comes to competing with any big players in the entertainment world, it is a suicide mission to try and do a better version of what the major players are doing. That's why the route Intellivision is taking might just work. The Amico isn't aimed at hardcore gamers, it is aimed at everybody. A cheaper console that anyone can pick up and play. Plus, as well as the two controllers provided, six other players can join in on the fun by downloading a free app to their smartphone. The console is expected to be released in October 2020.
