Huawei’s New 5G Foldable Phone Will Debut Later This Month

At this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, which begins on Monday, February 25, Huawei is expected to introduce its first foldable device. The Chinese company has sent invites that announce the official debut of new 5G foldable smartphone at MWC 2019. Huawei’s MWC keynote is scheduled for Sunday, February 24th, at 2PM Barcelona time / 8AM ET, which is when the presentation will take place.

The Huawei folding smartphone will bend, meaning it will look like an ordinary smartphone but open out into a larger device that is similar to a tablet. The Shenzhen-based Huawei will compete against the world's largest smartphone maker, Samsung, and Chinese neighbor Xiaomi in an attempt to be the first mobile device company to feature a folding display.

The company consumer business group CEO Richard Yu said last week in Beijing that the company was preparing a launch later this month for a foldable phone powered by its new 5G chipset, the Balong 5000. Samsung is expected to announce the Galaxy F foldable device at Unpacked 2019 in San Francisco on February 20.

The Chinese mobile giant is also expected to publicize the next generation of the P20 series, which is expected to have more rear cameras than the triple lens P20 Pro. Huawei launched the Mate 20 series with triple cameras in October.

The Huawei foldable device is expected to be different than the Samsung model. Instead of having a tablet-like screen covering the interior of the phone when collapsed, the Huawei folding display will stay on the outside of the device. It is also expected to launch with 5G. Though 5G networks are still not readily available, they are expected to debut this year. 5G mobile networks will follow, but not replace 4G networks and feature improved capacity, lower latency, and faster speeds.

The new Huawei phone is expected to go on sale in June, according to ETNews and a South Korean network official who saw an early model of the device in November. According to the official, the phone was nearly complete. Given its exclusivity and manufacturing intricacy, the device will probably come with a hefty price tag.
