There are more stories on the internet about big houses that the rich own than you can count. There are even more articles about all those celebrities that never realized that the gravy train ends at some point and thus, they spend well beyond their means. Eventually we all get tired of seeing how the uber-rich spend money that we'll never have. This is not about them. This is about the guy or girl who made it big while remaining grounded enough to spend within their means and who chose not to live in excess. There are actually quite a few of these individuals out there and one would be surprised to note that most of them are younger with all the money in the world at their disposal.
One has to keep in mind though, that these people have money and lot's of it. So what is small to them may not be small to us, with a few exceptions. Don't expect everyone to live like a hermit or in some small bungalow that even we can afford. Although, one person came close and does live in the trailer shown above. Everyone here lives in New York City or the West Coast. As such even their little huts are more than we can afford. So everything is all about perspective here. But for all of these people, the houses that they have relative to the money they have in the bank, is akin to the rest of us buying a house on our credit card.
15 Robert Pattinson, Net Worth: $100 Million
Here is a man that can buy every reader here 100 million times over, and even though no one seems to want to hire this guy anymore, what does he care? He has nine figures in the bank, most of which came from his gig in the Twilight movies. Yet his house costs a mere $2.2 million. He even downsized having sold his massive (and we mean massive) mansion to move into this 2 bedroom house once he broke up with his former co-star Kirsten Stewart. The man is single now so in his mind, why take care of something you don't need? That's smart. Sitting at 1,940 square foot, the two-bedroom, two-bathroom house features a gated driveway, which any actor needs. It also has a pool and a hot tub in the backyard, as well as a wood-burning fireplace. Vaulted ceilings, skylights, and hardwood floors could be found sprawled throughout the cozy home.
14 Christina Ricci, Net Worth: $18 Million
Audiences first admired her when she played the creepy daughter in the Addams Family movie. Then she grew up and we saw her other side in the TV Series Pan Am. She remains grounded, perhaps full well knowing that fame doesn't last forever. Her first home was a modest two bedroom home in L.A., which she sold for $1.2 million two years ago. Last year, the new mommy and her husband bought the Brooklyn townhome shown above for around $2 million. We are sure its nice, but it's not exactly huge or out of the ordinary. The house includes a one-bedroom garden level (i.e basement) apartment that rents out for $2,000 per month. The upper level duplex unit has solid oak hardwood floors and 11-foot ceilings on the parlor floor. Upstairs, there are two bedrooms, a study and just a single bathroom.
13 Kesha, Net Worth: $40 Million
This lady is super rich, as her singing career just keeps getting more lucrative. Instead of blowing her money or keeping up with her fellow divas, she spent just $1.2 million on this 1,400 square foot bungalow. That's like the rest of us spending $10,000 on a house and putting the entire purchase on a credit card. Of course, the interior is stylish as one would expect. The home features a detached artist's studio, which the previous owner used to create her paintings but will no doubt serve as a music studio now. Having recently entered rehab for an eating disorder, the interior is geared towards a more mellow approach to life. Built in 1925, the home blends old and new, featuring arched walkways, simple white walls and hardwood floors. She even haggled the price and got the house for 10% less than what it was listed for.
12 Don Cheadle, Net Worth: $30 Million
The home located in Venice, California, is absolutely stunning. It would be anyone's dream house if you are into the industrialist look. It cost $2.45 million to buy a couple of years ago. Don Cheadle has always lived frugally. His previous house was much smaller and worth about 1/3 of the price of his new home. Marked by an eye-catching, rust-colored facade, the haven was made to be good for the earth, as it is solar ready, equipped with LED lighting and radiant heating. The best part of the home (which you can't see here) is the rooftop deck complete with fake grass and a breathtaking view of the beautiful surroundings.
11 Lea Michele, Net Worth: $10 Million
Lea Michele is a singer and star of the hit television series Glee. Despite her star status she lives in this 1920's L.A. bungalow that a normal family would be putting a 60 year mortgage on in Los Angeles. At 1805 square feet, the bungalow is fairly small containing only two bedrooms. The price tag of $1.4 million was actually not bad for a starter home in the area. The house has one luxury: a solar heated pool. According to her, "It's possible to live a really fun lifestyle that's still grounded and centered." It's unfortunate that she didn't have enough time to share the house and her life with her guy, Glee co-star Cory Monteith, before he passed away.
10 Warren Buffett, Net Worth: $64.7 Billion
OK, so the house is not small. Anyone driving past this thing might think to themselves that the people living there must be relatively successful to afford this place. One might think that the tenant owns a small business, perhaps a successful restaurant. But then you find out that the tenant is one of the three richest men in the world, and then you think, that's it? There's a cheap pickup truck parked in the driveway for God's sake, and there is no gate to keep the regular folk out! Apparently the man loves it here and just doesn't want to leave, having lived in his Nebraska home for close to 60 years. He still stops by a local strip mall every once in awhile to play bridge with his friends.
9 Mark Zuckerberg, Net Worth: $53.7 Billion
The man is worth almost as much as Warren Buffett and more than every reader of this site combined. Yet, his house is smaller than Warren's and probably smaller than 98% of all Hollywood celebrities. Prior to 2011 when he bought this house, he was living in a small bungalow despite being worth billions. His new house is a 5,617 square-foot property in the Crescent Park neighborhood of Palo Alto, CA. It's a big house, but no bigger than what a doctor would live in. According to information from the real estate agent, a wide rocking chair porch at the front of the home leads to an impressive entrance hall and reception area. There is a large living room, with a banquet hall-sized dining room and wood-paneled family room. The large kitchen opens into a glass sun porch. The house has five bathrooms.
He loves his 113 year old house so much that a couple of years back he bought four neighboring houses and demolished them, replacing them with newer homes. Why did he do that? Developers wanted to buy the properties to erect taller buildings which in the end, would have blocked his view. Instead, Zuckerberg bought the properties himself intending to build smaller homes that would keep the feel of the neighborhood intact.
8 Zooey Deschanel, Net Worth: $16 Million
Although she plays the Quirky Girl on TV, New Girl‘s Zooey Deschanel is actually quite traditional, having just purchased this run of the mill home in the seaside South Bay community of Manhattan Beach. From the outside it looks small, but it really isn't. The house is 5,166 square feet and costs a steep $4.5 million. The neighborhood is not popular with Hollywood types but is a favorite locale for all sorts of famous athletes, like Mia Hamm and Maria Sharapova. There is no pool yet on the property, as the land is small encompassing a total of around 8,000 square feet. Unlike most actresses, she doesn’t see the point of wasting her hard-earned money on designer clothes. She frequents thrift shops thus giving her enough money to keep her humble abode and raise a child.
7 Dave Grohl, Net Worth: $260 Million
One of the wealthier people on this list, the lead singer of the Foo Fighters and former drummer for Nirvana, has lived in the same house for close to 20 years, only recently adding a recording studio in the basement. Why sell it? It's absolutely breathtaking having been custom built and designed by an architect. He recently downsized, having sold off other properties like his California beach house. Dave is cheap, he is not your typical rock n' roller. He doesn't even do drugs, because it could endanger what he loves most, his music. When it comes to money he is well grounded, having said: ''My mother was a public school teacher in Virginia, and we didn’t have any money, we just survived on happiness, on being a happy family.'' With all those dollars in the bank, Dave must be ecstatic.
6 Paul McCartney, Net Worth: $1.2 Billion
He is the only of two musicians on the planet who's a billionaire. The other is Andrew Lloyd Weber. His former bandmates in the Beatles, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, lived in mansions worthy of the Queen herself. This man lives in a relatively small and simple three-story home that looks like every other house on this street. Imagine the tour bus guide in London telling you that this was Sir Paul McCartney's house. Would you believe him? According to the singer's daughter Stella McCartney, her father was a “tight bastard” who practiced responsible spending. In fact, his friends also label him as “cheap”. He even threw a party for his ex-wife when they were married and had his guests buy their own drinks.
5 Brooke Shields, Net Worth: $20 Million
The house is small, but it is still in the Hampton's, so it costs a pretty penny. Most people who ever watched Seinfeld reruns know where the Hampton's are and know how prestigious it is to live there, as so many famous episodes were set there, like 'Shrinkage', and the episode with the line: ''You gotta see the baby''. How much does a small traditional home like this cost? Approximately $5 million. It's pocket change for someone with more then that amount of money in the bank. She bought the house from former NFL tight end Vyto Kab, who played for the New York Giants and the Philadelphia Eagles.
4 Bill And Giuliana Rancic, Combined Net Worth: $12 Million
The couple could afford a-lot, but unlike other celebrities they decided to take a cue from home improvement shows like Rehab Addict, as they bought this fixer upper in Chicago and restored it back to its original glory. The brownstone has three floors, each connected by gorgeous wooden staircases in their original form. The interior details were kept as close as possible to the original designs created back in 1866, with high ceilings and three fireplaces. The kitchen was about the only room that they completely redid. The house cost $2.1 million back in 2013, so it's definitely not a fixer upper most of us can afford, but it is definitely on the cheap and small side for a couple that can afford so much more.
3 Demi Lovato, Net Worth: $15 Million
She is not on this list only because her home is small. It is not an estate akin to other divas, but nevertheless it is quite large. She is here because of what she did with her first millions. At the age of eighteen, before getting a home for herself, she spent her fortune and set up her parents with a luxury condo on the West Coast replete with everything. That is a well grounded child who didn't let her celebrity status get to her head. Her latest home was a reno job as well. She first revealed her interior work to the public this year, and many magazines were all abuzz about the job she did on the inside.
2 Tom Shadyac, Net Worth: $12 Million
Who is this guy, and why is he worth so much money? He is the director who first introduced us to Jim Carrey in Ace Ventura. He also directed Eddie Murphy in multiple movies, Robin Williams in Patch Adams and Steve Carell in Bruce Almighty. In 2007, he lived in a 17,000 square foot mansion in Beverly Hills. He was actually worth much more just a few years back, having given away three-quarters of his fortune after suffering a bicycle accident in 2007 that changed his life. After his accident he opened a homeless shelter in Virginia and gives money to all sorts of charities. According to him: "The more I give away the wealthier I feel. For everything I gave up, so much more was returned. The trappings of fame and fortune are exactly that - a trapping. It's called the spoils of success for a reason." Now he lives in a 1,000 sq ft. trailer home in a trailer park. Admittedly the trailer is on a Malibu beach, thus making it more expensive than most of the homes we live in, but nevertheless it is still a trailer home and the guy is worth millions.
1 Vincent Kartheiser, Net Worth: $4 Million
The man who played the annoyingly insecure Pete Campbell on Mad Men, and the man with the smallest net worth on this list, also owns the smallest house out of everyone. It's not even a house, but a one room bungalow the size of a small hotel room. The bungalow is a whopping 580 square feet. Of course, it is gorgeous and the actor tried to sell it for around $800,000 a couple of years ago, so it's not exactly cheap either. Nevertheless, it's as cheap as a house gets in L.A. Not only does he have an inexpensive house, Kartheiser doesn't even own a mirror and he's threatening to toss his bed. He doesn't even own a car or have an agent; how cheap is that?
