Losing a spouse is said to be one of the most painful losses a person can go through. Becoming a young widow is something everyone fears after they exchange “I do’s” and for many unfortunate people, it is their reality. When you get married, you assume that you and your significant other will be together until the two of you are old and grey. Death makes no exception, whether you are rich or poor, famous or the average Joe, you can lose the people you love as quickly as you found them.
The hard part about being in the public eye is that it’s difficult to grieve in private. With paparazzi surrounding their compounds and journalists calling their assistants, celebrities often grieve differently than us normal folk. Years have past since the following people have lost their spouses, and we have seen them numerous times on the red carpet or in an interview with a smile on their face, so many fans forget that they have suffered such great loss.

10. Joan Rivers
The late Joan Rivers was married to film and television producer Edgar Rosenberg in the mid 1960s. Rivers was known for her larger-than-life personality and crude opinions. She was a great actress, comedian, writer and television host and her husband was her manager. Rivers lost her husband in 1987 after he committed suicide by drug overdose. Although she lived a long life after his death, Rivers never remarried. Joan Rivers died in September of 2014 in New York City. She is an iconic figure that will be missed, however she is now reunited with her loving husband after so many years.
9. Martin Short
Martin Short is an amazing Canadian comedian and actor. In 1980, Short married fellow Canadian actress and comedian Nancy Dolman. The two were one of the best and most communicative couples in show business. Short and Dolam adopted three beautiful children together, Henry, Katherine Elizabeth and Oliver Patrick. In 2010, Short lost his best friend and wife. Dolman died at the age of 58 after suffering from ovarian cancer. Short has had a hard time accepting the loss of his wife but finds peace in knowing she is no longer suffering. Short has continued to make his friends and family laugh and is positive his wife is looking down from heaven laughing along.
8. Mel Brooks
Brooks and actress Anne Bancroft got married in 1964. From the moment they met, the two were inseparable. They were described as best friends, soul mates, lovers and partners in crime. In 2005, Bancroft sadly passed away after battling with uterine cancer. Brooks and Bancroft were one of those couples that movies were written about. They had a deep and real connection that lasted from 1964 all the way to her death in 2005. Brooks has stayed connected with his wife by bringing to life her last pieces of work. The connection these two shared was one we should all hope to have in our life.
7. Katie Couric
Katie Couric is an extremely bright and fascinating woman. Her elegance, class and intelligence made her the successful woman she is today. For those of you who don’t know who she is, Couric is an American journalist and author. Couric’s first love Jay Monahan passed away in 1998 from colon cancer and Couric remained a widow until 2014 when she married John Molner. The couple married in the Hamptons and invited their closest friends and families to join in during the sophisticated festivities. Although Couric never thought she would remarry, her fans, friends and family are all overjoyed for her and her new husband.
6. Joe Biden
Biden is a vice president who understands pain and loss. Biden lost both his wife and daughter and in 2012 he opened up about it. In December 1972, Biden received the news that his daughter and wife had been killed in a car crash while on their way home from Christmas shopping. Biden was at the time only 29 and has even said that in those moments, he understood how someone could commit suicide. Biden, who had two sons, needed to be strong and keep his family together. He has accomplished so much but has said that not a day goes by where he doesn’t think of his wife and one-year-old child who died tragically on that winter day.
5. Courtney Love
Many people associate Courtney Love with her late husband Kurt Cobain. Love and Cobain had a very public and twisted relationship. When Cobain passed away, there was a lot of controversy surrounding his death; some rumors even blamed Love for his death however fans of the couple don’t believe she would ever hurt Cobain. He left behind a beautiful daughter, Frances Bean, who was only two years old at the time and has had a rocky relationship with her mother for years. Love and Cobain were one of the most iconic rock and roll couples and Love has yet to remarry. Courtney has said on many occasions that Kurt was the love of her life and losing him was the hardest thing that she has ever had to go through.
4. Anna Nicole Smith
Anna Nicole Smith was in the center of controversy when she married the wealthy and much, much older J. Howard Marshall II. The Playboy star had been compared to a modern day Marilyn Monroe and was known as an actress and television personality. Smith became a widow at the young age of 28 years old after her husband passed away at 90. The couple had only been married for a year and although Smith claimed that Marshall was the love of her life, many believe becoming a widow was Anna Nicole’s plan. Smith passed away in 2007 at the age of 39.
3. Paul McCartney
Paul McCartney married Linda Eastman in 1969. Eastman was a talented musician and photographer and was a very passionate animal rights activist. The couple had four children together, Mary, Stella and James, as well as Heather, Linda’s daughter who Paul legally adopted. Paul and Linda stayed married until her death in 1998. After a long and difficult battle against breast cancer, Eastman passed away at the age of 56. After her death, Paul was very open about going to see a counselor to help him deal with his loss. McCartney has since remarried two times, neither of which lasted as long as his marriage to the woman many call the love of his life.
2. Keanu Reeves
Although Keanu Reeves and girlfriend Jennifer Syme were not married, the couple were extremely committed to one another. Syme and Reeves were expecting a child in 1999, however Syme gave birth to a stillborn, Ava Archer Reeves. This devastated both Reeves and Syme who had been carrying the child for 8 months. Over a year later, tragedy struck Reeves’ life once more when Jennifer was killed in a car crash. She was alone in the car and died on the scene. The accident took place near their Hollywood home and friends and family claim Reeve never got over her death.

Brosnan is without a doubt one of the sexiest men in Hollywood. However, what many of us forget is that in 1991 Brosnan lost his wife Cassandra after 17 years of marriage. Cassandra was only 43 at the time and Brosnan was left devastated. Three years after the passing of his wife, Brosnan met Keely Smith who was a journalist at the time. After seven years of dating, the couple tied the knot in 2001. Brosnan feels grateful that he got a second chance at love but will always say that losing his wife was the saddest time of his life.
