There has always been pressure for celebrities to maintain a certain weight; a weight that can be both unrealistic and unhealthy. In recent years that silent agreement has become a loud requirement and if those requirements are not met, celebrities can be the subject of scrutiny. Social media has allowed more than just designers to berate celebrities for their weight; bloggers, Twitter trolls and other media outlets have allowed people to sit behind their computer and criticize what they do not like. This is where fat-shaming comes into play; celebrities are fat shamed on a daily basis, normally for being too big, but oddly enough some have be shamed for being too skinny. Clearly no one has the capability to please everyone; if that was not bad enough, a select group of pregnant stars have also been fat-shamed online. The likes of Jessica Simpson, Kelly Clarkson and Christina Aguilera have all had run-ins with fat-shamers. Although the entertainment industry is giving more allowance to full figured women, such as plus size models Robyn Lawley and Tess Holliday, they are also giving the impression that it is okay to criticize these women. Actress Melissa McCarthy knows firsthand about being fat-shamed, due to a nasty review of one of her films that focused more on her weight then the actual film; or new mom Jessica Simpson who has been made fun of for her weight since she hit the music scene in 1999. Here is a list of some of your favorite women and their encounter with fat-shamers.
15. Jessica Simpson
has also fallen victim to fat-shaming. Simpson said “it’s ridiculous and unfair” addressing her fat shaming during her pregnancy. Reportedly gaining close to 60 pounds while pregnant with her son she admitted to becoming very aware of what she puts in her body and to exercise regularly so the media would not taunt her. In 2009 during a performance, Simpson wore a pair of jeans that the media dubbed “mom jeans”, and she was picked apart pound by pound. When did it become okay to berate a pregnant woman for allowing her body to do what’s natural when baring a child?
14. Jennifer Lawrence
Hollywood’s “it” girl Jennifer Lawrence has publicly stated that the trolls of Hollywood constantly tell her that she needs to lose weight. “In Hollywood I’m obese”, Lawrence told Elle magazine in 2012; she admitted that her new approach to dealing with people who tell her she needs to lose weight or diet is to “f*** off”. Lawrence has said that since she was a child in this industry she has been told she needs to lose weight. However, she now feels more comfortable in her body and with all her Hunger Games training, her body is looking better than ever.
13. Christina Aguilera
Although singer Christina Aguilera has always embraced her curves, she has caught a lot of flak for packing on a few pounds during her down time; she has regularly been called fat and had diet plans suggested to her by random nutritionists. Aguilera told Lucky magazine in 2012, “The challenge I’ve always had is being too thin, so I love that now I have a booty, and obviously I love showing my cleavage. If you can work it and you can own it, that confidence is going to shine through [regardless of your size].” Christina has since had another baby and lost a ton a weight.
12. Tyra Banks
Model Tyra Banks told fat-shamers to “kiss her fat a**” when she was made fun of for putting on a little weight. The former Victoria Secret model was ruthlessly mocked and berated for doing what normal people do at the beach; wearing a bathing suit. Headlines read, “Thigh-ra Banks” and “America’s Next Top Waddle”. In 2007 on her popular talk show, Tyra slammed the fat-shamers by posting the photo and pointing out all the good things about her body while her audience cheered her on. Tyra still allows her weight to fluctuate and seemingly does not care what the tabloids say.
11. Kirstie Alley
Actress Kirstie Alley was mocked endlessly when she popped back into the public eye; she had gained a significant amount of weight. She was on several tabloid covers every week with headlines that claimed everything from diabetes diagnosis, to heart attacks and lap band surgeries. However, Kirstie had the last laugh when she created the funny, semi-autobiographical show, Fat Actress. When the show ended, Kirstie was endorsed by weight loss company Jenny Craig that helped her to get to a comfortable weight and fight off those awful nay sayers. She has since gained back a few pounds and created her own diet that keeps her body the way she likes it.
10. Kelly Osbourne
Kelly Osbourne appeared on the scene in 2002 in a reality show that documented her family’s’ crazy life. However, as we all know with fame comes hate and Kelly was quickly picked on for her fuller figure. Even after losing 70 pounds, Kelly has said to Fabulous magazine that she is still made to feel like her body is not good enough. “I’m the thinnest I’ve ever been and the healthiest I’ve ever been. The totally insane thing is that I’m a U.K. size 4 to 6 and people still say I’m fat. I mean it’s crazy but I’ve had this all my life and I just try and ignore it.”
9. Lady Gaga
Musician Lady Gaga shed a light on fat-shaming when she was forced to address her problems with bulimia and anorexia. After gaining a few pounds during her down time, Gaga was ready to get back into the studio and on the stage; however, her new size seemed to offend people. She was called fat, chunky and people made comments about her new “plus” size, she was basically put down for being a healthy weight. Gaga took to her own website, Little Monsters and posted a picture of herself in her underwear; she captioned it with “Bulimia and anorexia since I was 15.” enough said.
Songstress Adele has also fallen victim to fat-shaming; specifically by fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld and late comedian Joan Rivers. Although Adele has won numerous awards for mastering her craft, she got no respect from fellow celebrities in a newspaper that Lagerfeld was editing (random) when he called Adele “a little too fat”; although he also said she has a beautiful face and a divine voice, he could have certainly left out the fat part. Lagerfeld later tried to defend his comment by saying it was good for people to hear. Joan Rivers also jumped on the bandwagon by making a “joke” calling Adele “chubby” and telling her to “calm down”.
7. Kelly Clarkson
Singer Kelly Clarkson has always kept a little junk in the trunk, simply because she is happy with her figure. However, her weight has always fluctuated and Kelly cannot please everyone. Even at her skinniest she was being called fat and criticized for her “full figure”. In 2009 Kelly admitted that she was sick of being called fat and for seven years, it has been the same fat jokes over and over again. She advised that they “cool it”. Recently Kelly has been fat-shamed by British Journalist Katie Hopkins calling her baby weight, carrot cake weight; Kelly simply responded, “I’m awesome”.
6. Gabourey Sidibe
When Precious actress Gabourey Sidibe made her debut, she was immediately criticized for her weight. Not only by critics and casting directors, but by fellow actresses like Joan Cusack who told Sidibe to quit the business because it was so “image conscious”. She has been called everything from balloon head to an enormous fat black chick by Howard Stern. Gabby clearly does not care; she barely gives the fat-shamers the time of day but when she does, she Tweets gems like; “To people making mean comments about my GG pics, I mos def cried about it on that private jet on my way to my dream job last night. #JK”
5. Jennifer Love Hewitt
When actress Jennifer Love Hewitt was snapped having a relaxing day at the beach, she probably never imagined that a photo of her embracing her significant other would turn into a fat-shaming moment. Instead of looking at how happy she was, the tabloids focused in on her thicker appearance and cellulite. Hewitt decided to nip the crazy talk in the butt before it got too out of hand; she took to her blog and talked about her size and being happy with her curves. “A size 2 is not fat!” she went on to include, “To all girls with butts, boobs, hips and a waist, put on a bikini – put it on and stay strong.”
4. Kim Kardashian
When reality TV star Kim Kardashian was pregnant with daughter North West, the media had a field day (in particular OK magazine and In Touch magazine). They made fun of Kim for her swollen feet, her weight gain and accusing her of having butt implants and fat injections in her face. Kim stood up for herself taking to Twitter to express her distaste for the fat-shaming she endured. “Making fun of me pregnant & making fun of me trying to lose weight now shame on you. I’m not perfect but I will never conform to your skinny standards sorry! Not me.”
3. Melissa McCarthy
Funny girl Melissa McCarthy has the pleasure of being one of the funniest women in Hollywood right now; however, this did not stop random film critic Rex Reed from fat-shaming the hell out of her. Instead of sticking to his job and reviewing her movie Identity Thief, he decided to review McCarthy’s dress size. Reed called her a “female hippo” and “tractor-sized”. Reed also ripped the movie to shreds in the process. It is a good thing evil does not prosper because the film debuted at the number one spot and McCarthy responded with a clever comeback; “I felt really bad for someone who is swimming in so much hate.”. Oh yea, McCarthy also had some help from director Paul Feig who simply Tweeted “I cordially invite Mr. Rex Reed to go f*** himself.”
2. Kate Upton
Sports Illustrated model Kate Upton has had to put up with a lot of haters since her rise to fame; she has been called everything from chunky to squishy. Kate has been fat-shamed way too many times to count; one blogger even went out of their way to say, “huge thighs, no waist, big fat floppy boobs, terrible body definition — she looks like a squishy brick”. The blogger then questioned if American women actually strive to look like her. Kate is seemingly not bothered; every year she reaches bigger and better heights in her career and she has no time for fat-shamers.
1. Khloe Kardashian
Khloe Kardashian is constantly being compared to her sisters and at times, even her mother. She has been called the fat Kardashian, the chubby one, chunky, you name it. People even joked and made ridiculous accusations that Lamar Odom started abusing drugs again because Khloe was fat. Fat-shaming was taken to a new level when it came to Khloe. Although Khloe told Glamour magazine in 2013 that she is happier when she is a bit heavier, this is no reason to pack on the insults. Khloe is now in great shape; she is constantly on Twitter posting gym pics and a super tiny waist.
