When we’re younger, our parents constantly tell us to stay in school or else we will end up working at McDonald’s for the rest of our lives. Even though our parents meant well, the downward spiral of dropping out of school and then spending the rest of our days asking, “do you want fries with that,” is a bit overly dramatic. Even so, the idea of dropping out of school or worse, getting kicked out of school is scary enough to make most students follow the rules that could get them expelled if they break them enough. The celebrities listed below were not the kind of students to follow the rules. In their high school days, these celebrities got into enough mischief to make the schools they went to kick them out for good. Luckily for these future celebrities, school just didn’t seem to be their thing anyway. All of the celebrities listed below managed to make tons of money and gain the fame they were probably only dreaming about at the time of their expulsion. So just in case your ever worried about what your life will come to if you don’t finish school or are expelled from school, below is a list of 12 celebrities that were expelled from school but still, somehow managed to make millions.
12. Lily Allen
The fact that Lily Allen was expelled from multiple schools probably doesn’t come as that big of a surprise. In all, Allen attended a grand total of thirteen schools and was expelled from several of them for smoking and drinking. In an interview, Allen said that she was, “doing things that I shouldn’t have been doing with boys that I shouldn’t have been doing at that young age. Smoking cigarettes, drinking.” At the age of 15, Allen dropped out of school for good after she decided that it just wasn’t for her. Being a high school drop out hasn’t seemed to hurt Allen in her career, though, as she has been a successful musician since 2002.
11. Salma Hayek
Salma Hayek, the beautiful actress who has starred in big time movies such as Frida, Grown ups and Puss in Boots, got into quite a bit of trouble when she was younger. Hayek’s family were devout Roman Catholics, so when Hayek was just twelve years old, she was sent to the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau, Louisiana. There, Hayek made a habit of playing pranks on the nuns. Eventually, Hayek was expelled for her pranks, much to her family’s dismay. Today, Hayek no longer identifies herself as a devout Catholic but she still says that she believes in God and Jesus Christ.
10. Owen Wilson
Owen Wilson has admitted that he was a bit of a troublemaker as a kid. In 10th grade, Wilson was caught cheating on a geometry exam and was expelled from St. Mark’s School of Texas. As a punishment, Wilson was sent to military school in New Mexico to finish his last two years of high school. After Wilson was able to finish high school, he enrolled in the University of Austin Texas, where he majored in English. At the time, Wilson didn’t think that he would ever go into acting. However, eventually destiny called and Wilson began his acting career with the 13-minute short film, Bottle Rocket.
9. Robert Pattinson
Twihards will always remember Robert Pattinson fondly as a hopelessly romantic vampire, but he was actually a bit rebellious as a child. Pattinson was expelled from school at the early age of twelve. Apparently, Pattinson was bullied and didn’t really try that hard in school. In an interview, Pattinson said, “I got expelled from school when I was 12-I was quite bad. I never did my homework. 8. Snoop Dogg
Snoop Dogg is another celebrity on this list who not surprisingly, got expelled from school. But even though the fact that Snoop Dogg was expelled from school isn’t all that surprising, the reasons behind his expulsion are. Apparently, Snoop attended an elementary school for gifted students. In an effort to show off one of his many gifts, Snoop decided it was a good idea to whip out his junk in the classroom. Of course, he was immediately expelled for indecent exposure. Eventually Snoop got back into school and ended up graduating from Long Beach Polytechnic High School, in 1989.
7. Charlie Sheen
As it turns out, Charlie Sheen was always a bit of a rebel. Just weeks before Sheen was about to graduate from Santa Monica High School, he was expelled for poor grades and attendance. After he was expelled just weeks shy of getting his diploma, Sheen decided to focus on his acting career. He made his big screen debut in the movie Red Dawn and years later, became the highest paid actor on television. Of course, we will always remember Charlie Sheen for his very public meltdown in which he was winning and drinking lots of tiger blood.
6. Elizabeth Hurley
Elizabeth Hurley is a successful actress and model who never seems to age. However, at the age of 12, things weren’t going all that well for the future super model. At the age of 16, she got involved with punk fashion and dyed her hair pink and pierced her nose. Luckily for Hurley, her lack of academic success didn’t hurt her in the long run. In the early 1990’s, Hurley became the face of Estée Lauder with no previous modeling experience.
5. Amy Winehouse
The late Amy Winehouse was an English singer and songwriter, who was known for her incredible voice and timeless music. At the age of 14, Winehouse was expelled from London’s Sylvia Young Theatre School for piercing her nose and for generally not caring all that much. After her expulsion, Winehouse decided to drop out of school for good at the young age of 14. In 2003, Winehouse’s debut album was released and in 2006, Winehouse received international recognition after the release of her songs, “You Know I’m No Good,” and “Rehab.” Sadly, Winehouse died of alcohol poisoning at the young age of 27.
4. Marlon Brando
Marlon Brando was the quintessential Hollywood bad boy when he was growing up. First, Brando was held back a year. Then, he was expelled from Libertyville High School for riding his motorcycle through the school halls. After he was expelled, Brando was shipped off to Shattuck Military Academy, where he was once again expelled, this time for sneaking off campus. However, after Brando received the support of his peers who thought his expulsion was too harsh, he was invited back to military school the following year. Eventually, Brando decided that school just wasn’t for him and dropped out for good. He went on to become one of the most respected and talented actors of all time.
3. Cary Grant
Although Cary Grant would grow up to become one of Hollywood’s favorite leading men, he was a bit mischievous as a teen. At the age of 14, Grant became addicted to the theater after he got a job at the Empire Theater as a limelight. Later, Grant decided to get himself expelled from school in order to follow his acting dreams. How did he do this? He simply snuck a peek into the girl’s bathroom in order to leave school behind to perform at the theater. He would go on to star in films such as Penny Serenade, None but the Lonely Heart and Bringing Up Baby.
2. Willem Dafoe
Actor Willem Dafoe, who has appeared in movies such as The Boondock Saints, Shadow of the Vampire, Spider-Man and The Grand Budapest Hotel, was once expelled from school for making an adult film. The star said, “I started being interested in girls when I was about 14, which I think is quite late. But once I got a taste that was it. I was off the blocks. Eventually, I was expelled from school for making a po***graphic film. I was just a young boy in Wisconsin-anything to get out there.” Today, Dafoe is happily married to Giada Colagrande, the couple has one child together.
1. Albert Einstein
Although Albert Einstein has made some of the most important scientific contributions in history, when he was younger, Einstein was considered by his teachers to be an utter disappointment. Einstein couldn’t speak fluently till the age of 9 and in elementary school, his teachers said that he was a very poor student and even thought that he might be mentally handicapped. At 16, Einstein’s formal education stopped when he was expelled for his rebellious attitude. Luckily, Einstein finally realized that his true passion was in the sciences and the rest is history.
