You have to be tall to do a lot of things, and not just getting something off a high shelf or being a supermodel. But, you don't need to be tall to be an actress. In fact, many of the top actors in Hollywood are short (no pun intended), so as a woman, being too tall might put you at a little disadvantage or potentially annoy your male co-star.
For example, Tom Cruise is reportedly 5’7”. In many of his movies, film makers make Cruise appear taller than his co-stars by placing him on a box or platform, asking his co-stars to slouch or even putting lifts in his shoes.
For a woman, being short used to mean cute, but now, short is considered sexy. Take Eva Longoria for example, she’s only 5’2”. Some other sexy shorties? Megan Fox is a fox at only 5’4”. Kim Kardashian is only 5’2”. Short girls can pack a powerful punch. Take actress and singer Idina Menzel, who is Elsa’s singing voice in Disney’s hit film Frozen (aka the woman who sings “Let It Go”); she’s only 5’4”. Who knew such a small woman could have one of the hugest voices in Hollywood? Menzel used to be married to a much taller man, actor Taye Diggs, who is 5’10”. Here are ten of the shortest women in Hollywood. All of these women have or have had incredible careers despite their height. In fact, for many of these women, it’s really been an asset.
10 Kristin Chenoweth - 4'11"
9 Lucy Liu - 5'3"
Elementary actress Lucy Liu's career has reached some pretty big heights despite her short stature. The actress is only 5’3,” but there are many rumors on the Internet that suggest she isn't even that tall. Despite her short height, Liu has made a career out of kicking butt on screen, literally. She’s been nearly lethal in several movies including three movies in the Charlie’s Angels franchise, Kill Bill and Payback. She also provided the voice of Master Viper in all three of Disney’s Kung Fu Panda movies.
Liu isn't only an actress, but she is also an artist. She has had her collages, paintings and photography presented at various galleries under her Chinese name, Yu Ling.
8 Amy Poehler - 5'2"
At only 5’2”, Amy Poehler proves you don’t have to be tall to be funny or to attract funny men. Poehler’s ex-husband, actor Will Arnett is much taller than she is, at 6’2”. Maybe height wasn’t the only difference that affected their marriage. However, Poehler has seemingly moved on from very tall guys and is currently dating comedian Nick Kroll. Kroll isn’t exactly short at 5’10”, but still, he's shorter than her previous beau. Paparazzi recently photographed the happy couple on their way back from a date at famed LA Eatery, Osteria Mozza. Hopefully their relationship will keep going strong and reach to new heights.
7 Judy Garland - 4'11"
Judy Garland was best known for her role as Dorothy in the classic movie, The Wizard of OZ. But, did you know Garland wasn't much taller than a munchkin? And remember, those ruby red slippers weren’t exactly high heels. Her daughter, famed entertainer Liza Minelli, is only 5’4”. Garland’s other daughter, Minelli’s half sister Lorna Luft, is also the same height. In the biopic, Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows (2001), Garland was portrayed by two different actresses who were much taller than she ever was. Tammy Blanchard, who is 5’6”, played the young Judy. Judy Davis who is 5’5” portrayed the older Garland.
6 Lea Michele - 5'2.5
5 Mary-Kate Olsen - 5'0
Actress and clothing designer Mary-Kate Olsen is known for being very petite at only 5 feet tall. She is one inch shorter than her sister Ashley, who is 5’1”. Contrary to rumors, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are not identical twins, but actually sororal twins (meaning, the female version of fraternal twins). In addition to height, Mary-Kate is left-handed and Ashley is right-handed, but if you look at their faces, and ignore their hands and height, you would most certainly think they are identical twins. Mary-Kate has been dating Olivier Sarkozy since 2012, who is a lot taller than she is , at 6’3” tall.
4 Estelle Getty - 4'10.5
The late Estelle Getty was best known for her role on the classic sitcom The Golden Girls, as Bea Arthur’s television mother, Sophia. While Bea Arthur was a lot taller than Getty at 5’10”, Getty was actually one year younger than Arthur was. However, the height difference definitely provided a comedic foil between the two actresses. Height difference was also used for comedic effect in the Getty flick Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot, which co-starred the 5’10” action hero, Sylvester Stallone. However, that might have been the only funny part of the movie, as it was universally panned and won multiple Razzie Awards.
3 Lena Dunham - 5'3"
Girls star Lena Dunham is known for spreading a message of positive body image and acceptance and not denying her height is a part of that message, except for the time she wore Christian Louboutin heels to the 2013 Golden Globe awards. The six-inch patent leather peep-toe stilettos were nearly impossible to walk in and Dunham stumbled not only on the red carpet, but also when she was going up to accept her award, she nearly fell. Today, Dunham chooses shoes that are slightly easier to walk-in. But hey, you can’t blame a short girl for trying.
2 Jada Pinkett Smith - 4'11.5
1 Zelda Rubinstein - 4'3"
Zelda Rubinstein is best known for her role as Tangina Barrons, in all three of the horror trilogy classic films, Poltergeist. Rubinstein also played the re-occurring character Giny Weedon for 44 episodes of the David E. Kelley drama Picket Fences, from 1992-1994. The actress also co-hosted The Strangest Places on Earth, which was a show that ran on the SyFy network from 2002-2006, with another famous horror actress, Linda Blair. If you were wondering, Blair was much taller than Rubinstein, but not really tall at all, ranking in at just 5 feet.
