It’s not always easy to find time to work out. A 45 minute to 1 hour long workout can take 3 or 4 hours by the time you drive or walk to the gym, take a class or go about your usual fitness routine, then go back home, eat some protein and shower. Who has time for that? For many busy people, it’s almost impossible to find time to stay in shape. So why not integrate burning calories into what you are already doing in your daily routine? Did you know that many activities you are probably already doing are almost as affective as a trip to the gym?
Here are ten of the fastest ways to burn calories. Some of these things you already do (hopefully often), and are a lot of fun. Other things on this list are chores you probably don’t want to do, but are necessary to live your life (or at least for the people who you live with not to hate you). Some of the ways to burn calories on this list are exercises you might already enjoy or might have heard of, but will allow you to burn a large amount of calories in a short period of time. Remember, these numbers vary depending on your height, weight and sex.
10 Spin Class: 600 calories per hour
Spin class or indoor cycling burns a lot of calories in a short amount of time. In a 40-minute class, you can burn over 600 calories, depending on how much you weigh and how hard you work. Spinning can turn you into a calorie-burning machine. This exercise is incredibly popular with celebs including Katie Holmes, Ashley Tisdale, Katie Couric, Jake Gyllenhaal, Bradley Cooper and even Lady Gaga. And all of names listed have also been known to take spin class with ordinary folks, so you never know who you might run into at your next Soul Cycle or Flywheel class.
9 Sex: 90-120 calories per hour
According to researchers at the University of Quebec in Canada, men burn 120 calories per hour during sex and women burn 90 calories per hour. That’s just a little less than half the amount burned if you spent 30 minutes jogging. But you know what’s a whole lot more fun than jogging? Having sex. Even an afternoon quickie will do you good. Some men expend more energy during quick sex sessions than they would have in the same amount of time on a treadmill. So, if you want to burn those calories and can’t decide between jogging, the treadmill or having sex; sex is always the best choice.
8 Moving: 400 calories per hour
When you move, you generally get rid of possessions (who doesn’t throw a ton of stuff out before they move) and apparently, also a lot of calories. You can burn up to 400 calories an hour moving. It's an incredibly physical activity. When you pack up boxes, you do a whole lot of squatting. And lifting those boxes is just as good as lifting weights. Even if you are simply packing boxes, you have to move things from one place to another. Think about this: have you ever seen a mover who was out of shape or didn’t have toned arms? Yep, moving is one of the best exercises out there.
7 Playing With A Puppy: 165 calories per hour
What could be better than playing with a puppy? Burning calories while you do it! You can burn up to 165 calories per hour chasing around your furry friend. Bonus: running around with your dog for even just a short period of time will wear the little pup out. And remember, as you might already know, a tired puppy is a happy puppy.
6 Dancing: 500 calories per hour
If you are deciding whether you should hit the gym with your friends or go to the hottest club and dance the night away, dancing the night away might just be a better fitness choice. Dancing can burn up to 500 calories per hour. So, next time you are in a club, don’t be afraid to show off your moves and get your groove on. But remember, don’t drink too much! Alcohol has a lot of calories, so if you drink more than you burn and have a late night pizza afterwards, you could end up breaking even or even taking in more calories.
5 Sleeping: 0.4 and 0.5 calories per pound of body weight, per hour
Did you know the body burns calories while you sleep? Most people burn between 0.4 and 0.5 calories per pound, per hour while they sleep. This means if you weigh 150lbs, you will burn at least 95 calories per hour. However, as your weight decreases, so does the amount of calories you burn in your sleep. This means someone who weighs 120 lbs will burn fewer calories than someone who weighs 150 lbs. But still, burning calories while you sleep is pretty cool. That’s sort of a free pass to not feel guilty about that midnight ice cream snack.
