Just because someone is a talented actor or singer doesn’t necessarily mean they have other creative talents, especially when it comes to fashion. While there are many celebs who have had successful clothing lines, both critically and commercially, including Chloe Sevigny, Sarah Jessica Parker, Adam Levine and Jessica Simpson, many others have attempted and failed to create fashion lines that people would actually want to wear, at any price point. Here are ten of the worst celeb fashion lines. Some of these are long defunct, while others were practically dead on arrival. Unfortunately, some are currently available, although anyone with even a modicum of good taste wouldn’t be caught dead or alive wearing these labels.
10. Miley Cyrus
and “good taste” are words rarely used in the same sentence. So in 2009, when she teamed up with designer Max Azria, of BCBG and Hervé Léger, to create a collection for Wal-Mart, it’s hard not imagine the person who pitched this collaboration currently collecting unemployment. The line which was designed for girls and teens and of course, tweens, included pants, graphic t-shirts, tops and shoes, all of which were priced from $7-$20. Most of the clothing was casual and certainly more Hannah Montana than the twerking Miley Cyrus we all know and cringe over today. By 2012, the line was defunct. It’s really surprising it actually lasted that long.
9. Sofia Vergara
While it can’t be confirmed that Sofia Vergara has mastered the English language, we can confirm she has mastered the art of looking hot all the time, which makes her the perfect person to have her own line for celebrity clothier Kmart. Not so creatively called, Sofia by Sophia Vergara consists of casual wear, shoes, jewelry and accessories, as well as swimwear (curvaceous body not included). There is even a home collection because sleeping on Sofia Vergara sheets is the closest most people will ever get to sleeping with Sofia Vergara. Bathroom accessories are also included in the line because if there’s one celeb that can peddle Benzoyl Peroxide Resistant Bath Towels, it’s her.
8. Robert Kardashian
If there’s someone who knows what it’s like to be at the bottom of someone’s feet, it’s poor Robert Kardashian, who can’t seem to capitalize on his complete lack of talent with the same success the rest of his entire extended family has. So naturally, when he decided to launch a sock line, it was bound to be as successful as Kim is wholesome. Kardashian gave his company the moniker Author George, after his own and his father’s middle names because he wanted the company to, according to his website, “sound classy.” These classy socks for men, women and children are available online and at some Neiman Marcus stores, but probably not for long.
7. Amanda Bynes
In 2007, actress Amanda Bynes launched a fashion line called “Dear” for now defunct sportswear retailer, Steve & Barry’s. She signed a five year deal with the company, who probably had too much faith in her talent because they filed for Chapter 11, only two years later. Oh dear, poor Amanda Bynes couldn’t save the store. Dear was mostly comfortable casual wear with fun prints like music notes and of course, deer. Currently, Amanda is enrolled in the Orange County Camus of FIDM, where hopefully she will learn how to make her next line more successful than her first one.
6. Nicki Minaj
Nicki Minaj is known for many things, none of which are having good taste in clothing or being wholesome. So naturally, Middle American retailer Kmart was the perfect place for her to launch a line of club wear for tweens and women. The line consists mostly of tight two-piece outfits, like matching tops and leggings, dresses, jeans and the requisite purses and tacky costume jewelry. It’s hard to imagine parents buying a crop top set for their thirteen year old daughters, without having the convenience of being able to pick up condoms and pregnancy test in the same store. The line is currently available, so if you can’t decide on the perfect gift to give to the teenage daughter of someone you truly dislike, head over to your nearest Kmart.
5. Avril Lavigne
Abbey Dawn was singer, Avril Lavigne’s failed attempt at a clothing line, which was even shorter than her marriage to Sum 41 frontman, Deryck Whilbley. Launched in 2010, the line consisted of clothing, shoes and accessories for both men and woman. The designs reflected Avril’s faux punk style with lots of pink, black, stud and prints, as well as a ripoff of every other trend that has been seemingly done, over and over again by every other designer, celeb and non-celeb alike. By 2008, Lavigne signed on to make Abbey Dawn available exclusively at Kohl’s, but not surprisingly, they dropped it just one year later.
4. Kardashian Kollection
Let’s face it, it’s really hard to buy clothing from people so rich they wouldn’t wear the clothing they design themselves. But no other celeb family loves money quite the way the Kardashians do, so it would only be natural for them to collaborate with Sears. This was in addition to putting their names on makeup, credit cards and owning a chain of higher end boutiques, selling clothing the Kardashians actually wear, called Dash. The Kardashian Kolletion was launched in 2011, with items costing costing between $20-$99, which is on the more expensive side for Sears. The Kollection has everything kovered from head to toe, from leopard print blazers for the office to completely un-wearable newsprint leggings, perfect for running to the newsstand to buy the latest edition of US Weekly.
It seems like Beyoncé can do no wrong, except when it comes to her clothing line, House of Deréon. The brainchild of Beyoncé’s mother, Tina Knowles, who designed many of the costumes that Destiny’s Child (and later Beyoncé as a solo artist), wore in their videos, as well as onstage. She launched House of Deréon because a lot of people wanted to copy her signature style. When the line, which had apparel, footwear and accessories was first launched in 2004, it was available at Macy’s and Bloomingdales. However, sales were not as high as anticipated in the US and the line became exclusive to Selfridges in Europe. In 2011, the line was bought out by LF USA and not much news about a revival has been heard about since.
2. Lindsay Lohan
You would think Lindsay Lohan would be the perfect person to design a fashion line. What Lindsay lacks in the good decision making department and overall reliability, she makes up for in the style and fashion sense department. Her legging line 6126, was launched in 2008 and was sold at Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Kitson and Bloomingdales. That kind of distribution almost guarantees success for a fashion line, but in typical Lindsay fashion, this line was a failure that ended in multiple lawsuits. So, it’s not surprising that all of Lohan’s fashion endeavors had reviews similar to her last big movie, I Know Who Killed Me because we definitely know who killed 6126.
1. Heidi Montag
The Hills star, Heidi Montag should have had a successful clothing line. She attended the prestigious, FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising), so at the very least she should have had a clue. In 2008, she launched a line of clothing called Heidiwood for now defunct tween retailer, Anchor Blue, with prices ranging from $10 to $60. Like Heidi’s career, the pieces in the line were loud, looked cheap and cut short. Heidiwood couldn’t exactly anchor Anchor Blue, which did not renew Heidi’s yearlong contract and shuttered completely in 2011.
