Willard Christopher Smith, better known as Will Smith, became a household name after starring in the TV series “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”, and later producing 24 episodes himself from 1994-1996. The young Smith was determined to make it in the entertainment industry, and has since continued to do so with the films he has produced and starred in.
In 1995 Will co-starred with Martin Lawrence in the movie “Bad Boys”, they played the role of detectives in the Miami narcotics department. An action packed film that encompassed hues of comedy as well. The movie showcased Smith’s versatility, not only was he a man of comedy but could play a role in a serious movie and make it a true success.
His involvement in “Bad Boys” led to more serious roles, ones such as “Independence Day”. In which Will plays the role of Captain Steven Hiller as an alien invasion threatens the future existence of Earth and human civilization. The battle takes to the air as Will and the Marine squad attempted to destroy the alien mother ship hovering above Los Angeles, by planting a nuclear missile on board. Throughout the following years, Will's success in action movies continued with the release of “Enemy of the State”, “Men in Black”, and “Wild Wild West”. People were surprised with his choice to take on Wild Wild West rather than star in the 1999 film The Matrix, Will never had any regrets with his choices. From 1995 to 2008, he acted in a minimum of 1 movie per year, including “Bad Boys 2”, “Men in Black II”, and “I, Robot”.
In 2004, Will chose to produce a movie his children could watch; “Shark Tale”. The switch from action flicks back to comedy was right up his alley. He later made another comedy 'Hitch' where he plays the role of a professional date doctor who helps men get the girl that they want, and ends up falling in love with reporter Sara Melas, played by Eva Mendes. In 2006, he took on a more serious role in the movie “Pursuit of Happiness”. This movie tells the story of Chris Gardner and his son's struggle with homelessness. A movie encompassed with deep emotion, his most serious movie to date, starring him and his son Jaden Smith.
After well over 20 years of acting, Will Smith is still going strong. He produced and co-wrote the highly anticipated film “After Earth” starring him and his son Jaden. After Planet Earth is abandoned, Cypher (Will Smith) takes his son Kitai (Jaden Smith) on a mission and crash land on Earth, which has evolved to exterminate humans. The movie is directed by M. Night Shyamalan and will be released May 31st 2013.
