His real name is Tijs Michiel Verwest, Tiesto is a DJ and musician from the Netherlands. He founded Black Hole Recordings in 1997 and released two CD series under the label, namely the “Magik” and “In Search of Sunrise” series. After a few more collaborations with other DJs, he broke into the mainstream with his remix of “Silence” by Delerium featuring Sarah McLachlan. His career took off with the release of his first solo album called “In My Memory.” He is the first DJ to play in the Olympics when he performed in the opening ceremonies of the 2004 Summer Games in Athens. In 2008, he garnered a Grammy nomination for his “Elements of Life” album. Known for trance music, Tiesto now plays house, electro house and progressive house music.
9 Skrillex - $15 million
His real name is Sonny John Moore. He originally was the lead singer of the post-hardcore band called From First to Last that released a couple of albums. He then started a career as a solo artist in 2009 when he released an EP called “Gypsyhook.” He was supposed to follow it up a full-fledged album called “Bells.” He ceased its production however. Instead, he took the name of Skrillex and released an EP called “My Name is Skrillex” for free download on his MySpace page. He then released “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites” in 2010 and “More Monsters and Sprites” the following year. He has won three Grammy Awards and was named MTV’s “Electronic Dance Artist of the Year.”
8 Swedish House Mafia - $14 million
This is an electronic dance music trio from Sweden. Its members are Steve Angello, Axwell and Sebastian Ingrosso. The three formally grouped together in 2008 and has risen to become the face of mainstream progressive house music. The group has been named one of the top 10 DJs in the world. They have disbanded, however, with a tour from 2012 to the first quarter of 2013 being their last together.
7 David Guetta - $13.5 million
He is a DJ from France who originally played in nightclubs back in the 80s and 90s. He later established Gum Productions where he released several albums, including “Just a Little More Love” in 2002, “Guetta Blaster” in 2004 and “Pop Life” in 2007. In 2011, Guetta came up with “One Love” that produced several hit singles in collaboration with famous pop artists. Among these were “When Love Takes Over” with Kelly Rowland, “Gettin’ Over You” with Chris Willis, Fergie and LMFAO and “Sexy Chick” with Akon.
6 Steve Aoki - $12 million
His full name is Steve Hiroyuki Aoki, the American electro house musician is also the founder of Dim Mak Records. He released his first album entitled “Pillowface and His Airplane Chronicles” in 2008. He was also featured on BBC Radio 1 in the same year for his “Essential Mix’ work. He also released an album in 2012 entitled “Wonderland” that featured collaborations with artists like Kid Cudi, LMFAO, will.i.am, and Lil Jon, among others. He also released an EP in the latter part of 2012 entitled “It’s the End of the World As We Know It.”
5 Deadmau5 - $11.5 million
His real name is Joel Thomas Zimmerman, Deadmau5 is actually pronounced as dead mouse. The Canadian DJ is known for performing in his trademark headdress called the mau5 head. The head was created by Deadmau5 using a 3-D software program and resemble that of a mouse. It appears in different colors and designs and he uses it during his performances. He released his first album in 2005 called “Get Scraped” and he has collaborated with other artists like Skrillex and BSOD.
4 DJ Pauly D - $11 million
His real name is Paul DelVecchio and he is best known as a part of the MTV reality show called “Jersey Shore.” It has a spin-off that stars the American DJ entitled “The Pauly D Project.” He released a single in 2010 entitled “Beat Dat Beat (It’s Time To)” and he participated in America’s Best DJ contest in 2010 and 2011. He is now under 50 Cent’s label called G-Unit and G-Note Records where he signed a deal for three albums.
3 Kaskade - $10 million
His real name is Ryan Raddon. He was voted America’s Best DJ in 2011 in a DJ Times poll. He is known for his minimal bassline style interspersed with sudden breaks and abrasive leads. He has released nine albums, including “Fire and Ice” that received a Grammy nomination for Best Dance and Electronica Album. He burst into the limelight when he stood at the forefront of the revival of the American progressive house music scene around the latter part of 2008.
2 Afrojack - $9 million
His real name is Nick van de Wall, the Dutch DJ is considered as one of the best DJs in the world. He released the single “Take Over Control” in collaboration with Eva Simons in 2010 and the song reached the charts in several countries. In 2010, he released the album entitled “Lost & Found.” He has featured in Pitbull’s hit song “Give Me Everything” along with Ne-yo and Nayer. He was also part of the Beyoncé hit entitled “Run the World (Girls).”
1 Avicii - $7 million
His real name is Tim Bergling and he hails from Sweden. He was nominated for a Grammy in 2011 for Best Dance Recording for “Sunshine,” which was done in collaboration with Guetta. He is best known for “Levels” that sampled “Something’s Got a Hold on Me” by Etta James. The single charted all over Europe and India.
