Bodyguards generally guard famous people, but along the way they sometimes become famous themselves. Often, the fame of a bodyguard has less to do with their skills and more to do with their personal lives. We have compiled a list of the ten most famous bodyguards and their current status in regards to their bodyguard career. 10. Reshawn Davis, Status: Active
First up on our list is Rashawn Davis, an active bodyguard. He is most famous for staring in his own TV show, Rob and Big, which aired on MTV from 2006 to 2008. Since the show went off air, Mr. Davis has continued to work as a celebrity bodyguard. He also owns a clothing business and occasionally makes television and public appearances. He is also well known for his large size and formed a hip-hop group called The Chunky Boys.
9. Mykola Melnychenko, Status: Defected and Retired
Mykola Melnychenko was the bodyguard of Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma. Between 1998 and 2000, Mr. Melnychenko began recording the President’s conversations. After gathering up ample evidence of President Kuchma’s wrong doings, he fled the country and released the recordings. The tapes revealed that President Kuchma had ordered the kidnapping and murder of journalist Georgiy Gongadze, and had also been selling illegal arms to Iraq. Mr. Melnychenko moved to the United States where he received political asylum.
8. Chuck Zito, Status: Retired
Mr. Chuck Zito has had a long and illustrious career, to say the least. Mr. Zito started as an amateur boxer and manual laborer after dropping out of high school at the age of 17. He joined the Hell’s Angels motorcycle group and eventually started a security firm called “Charlie’s Angels Bodyguard Services”. Mr. Zito ended up working for celebrity Lorna Luft who quickly recommended him to all of her friends in Hollywood. This allowed Mr. Zito to quickly build up his security company and later led to him working as a stunt man and actor. Mr. Zito now focuses on his acting career and is no longer an active bodyguard.
7. Brodus Clay, Status: Retired
At 6 foot 7 and nearly 400 pounds, you’d have no problem spotting Brodus Clay in the crowd. Born George Murdoch, he is better known by his wrestling stage name “Brodus Clay.” Mr. Murdoch is now retired but started his career as a bodyguard for Snoop Dogg. In 2006 Mr. Clay decided to retire from bodyguard work and began his career as a WWE wrestler.
6. The Big Boom, Status: Active
With a nickname like that, how couldn’t “The Big Boom” be famous? The Big Boom is based out of Texas as a celebrity bodyguard. He is also known for being a retired “pimp” (in the literal sense), and now writes books and gives advice in regards to relationships. While the Big Boom does continue to provide protective services for his clients, he now focuses mostly on motivational speaking and writing books.
5. Bernard Shaw, Status: Retired
After Patricia Hearst was kidnapped in 1974, no one could blame her for wanting a bodyguard around. What people probably didn’t expect, however, is that she would end up marrying her bodyguard, Bernard Shaw. The couple now has two children and reside in New York. Mr. Shaw is mostly famous due to his wife, a heiress to the Hearst fortune who was kidnapped by the notorious left-wing terrorist group, the SLA. She eventually joined the group and even participated in a bank robbery. She was sentenced to a 35 year jail term, which was eventually commuted by Jimmy Carter to two years.
4. Barry Mannakee, Status: Deceased
The former body guard of Princess Diana, Barry Mannakee has gained his fame for reasons other than his top notch guarding skills. Mr. Mannakee was once the closest confidant for Princess Diana. Many believe that Princess Diana was having an affair with Mr. Mannakee though there is no concrete proof of this. Princess Diana was recorded on tape, however, saying that she was in love with him and wanted to run away with him. Mr. Mannakee was killed in a car accident in 1987, which Princess Diana allegedly arranged because he knew too much.
3. Anna Loginova, Status: Deceased
Anna Loginova was famous for being both a top-notch female security guard and also a model. The striking young woman was known for being calm under pressure and for being one of the best female body guards in the world. She ran a security company which trained and supplied female bodyguards. Many clients prefer female bodyguards because they are more discrete. Unfortunately for Ms. Loginova she was killed in a car jacking incident. According to witnesses from the scene, when her Porshe was stolen, she grabbed onto the door handle and was dragged down the street. She sustained injuries and died on the scene.
2. Andrei Lugovoi, Status: Retired
Andrei Lugovoi is a KBG trained ex-body guard who started his career protecting Russian politicians and leaders. While working for the Russian government, he protected numerous leaders, including Prime Minister Yegor Gaidar, Foreign Minister Andrey Kozyrev, and the head of the presidential administration Sergey Filatov. After leaving the Federal Protective Service of Russia in 1996, he founded a private security company and worked as the head of security for ORT, a private television company. In 2007 Lugovoi was selected to join the Russian parliament and remains a politician to this day.
1. Nasser al-Bahri, Status: Retired
Otherwise known as Abu Jandal (meaning “the killer), Nasser spent several years as a body guard for Osama bin Laden. After fighting in numerous wars and protecting bin Laden, Nasser returned to his home country of Yemen. He was arrested and held in jail for two years. A judge eventually freed him after Nasser agreed to continue to study Islam and to meet with the judge and younger students to discuss religious topics. Since his release, Nasser has largely shunned his former life and now works as a business consultant.
