He's the man women want and the man men wish to be. With his preference of martinis, unmistakable Aston Martin and beautiful women by his side, James Bond is truly and iconic character as the name itself. With 25 films it has accumulated $6,159,388,878 and with two more expected to hit theaters in the next few years, Bond may be well on his way to the top as most successful film franchise. Skyfall was the most successful Bond movie making $1,108,348,855 at the box office.
7 Star Wars
With seven films which have made $4,382,359,868 since the first film of the franchise was released back in 1977. The film that brought back the most money was Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace with $1,027,044,427. Now that Disney bought Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion, the revival of the franchise is on its way and a new film is set to hit theaters in 2015.
6 Tolkien's Middle Earth
Peter Jackson was in charged of taking on the massive project of what is Tolkien's Middle Earth, with The Lord of the Rings being the first installment. Peter Jackson took on Middle Earth once more with The Hobbit, a three-part film series based on the book The Hobbit, with one already released and two more are expected to hit theaters on December of 2013 and 2014.

5 Pirates of the Caribbean
Many adaptations come from books, short stories, fairy tales, etc., Pirates of the Caribbean is a different, the film series is based on Walt Disney's theme park ride of the same name. No surprise that Spider-Man has made its way to being one of the most successful film franchises of all time. With four films already released and two more expected to come, it has grossed $3,248,563,075 and Spider-Man 3 being the most successful out of all with $890,871,626 in ticket sales.
