Magic Johnson AIDS

Magic Johnson's announcement rocked the sports world when he came out about the fact that he had tested positive for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), on November 7, 1991. On that somber press conference, Magic Johnson flashed his trademark smile and vowed to become a spokesman for AIDS prevention.

His statement then was:

"I plan to go on living for a long time.

"I'm going to be a spokesman for the HIV virus. I want young people to realize they can practice safe sex. Sometimes you're a little naive about it and you think something like that can never happen to you. It has happened but I'm going to deal with it. My life will go on. Life is going to go on and I'll be a happy man."

After almost 22 years, Magic Johnson is still alive. Pat Riley, former coach and lifelong friend helped Magic whip into shape. The 1992 Olympics in Barcelona was also one factor of his extended life not to mention his wife, Cookie.

Magic on AIDS....

"I tell you, it's funny because the only time I think about HIV is when I have to take my medicine twice a day."

"The important thing is this; Just because I'm doing well doesn't mean that they're going to do well if they get HIV. A lot of people have died since I have announced. This disease is not going anywhere."
