It was 10 or 15 years ago (an eternity in the celebrity world) when a young and naughty 20-something Kim Kardashian made the club rounds with bad little rich girl Paris Hilton. Back in those days, it was Paris who was getting the big bucks for simply showing up at a club, gracing it with her presence. Kim and the whole Kardashian clan were relatively unknown. Then there was Kim's 2007 viral sex tape with Ray J. A star was born and Keeping Up With the Kardashians followed almost immediately.
For several years now, there have been signs that the golden girl of reality television, now in her mid-30's, has perhaps passed her prime. The same can be said for the whole Kardashian franchise, though. Why? Well, read on and find out why the Kardashians may be on their way out. This may be great news for some. A tragedy for others, particularly if your name is Kardashian.
9 Keeping Up With the Kardashians - Ratings Drop and Drop
In 2009 when Kim walked down the aisle with Kris Humphries, the show was pulling in 4 million plus viewers. Fast forward to 2014, and the melodramatic season premier of Season 9 where Kris and Bruce publicly decide to call it quits, saw half a million people switch channels away from the show, with viewing figures of around 2 and a half million. By the time Kanye and Kim did a side deal for the broadcast of their wedding (meaning it would not be on the family show), some say that there was little point in continuing to watch. Later in the 9th Season, ratings dipped to 2 million.
8 Kim's Marriage To Kris Humphries - The Beginning Of The End?
When Kim had her first fairy tale wedding to NBA player Kris Humphries, there was huge hype and publicity. Then, 72 days later, it was all over. Bad luck, some say. Others? The whole show was just that. A show to pull in viewers and bucks. Kris Humphries was very busy telling anyone and everyone that Kim should give the hundreds of thousands of presents back to the people who had given them. Instead, she only gave around $200,000 to charity. None other than Fox News pointed out that our Kim made around $18 million from 72 days of unblissful marriage, or around $250,000 a day. Kim's Q-Score (popularity rating) went from a high of 9 at the time of the wedding, to 4 as the fallout from the divorce hit. Why does that matter? Well, companies handing out endorsements and lucrative contracts use the Q-Score. Some say this was the beginning of the end for the Kardashians.
7 Magazine Sales Plummet
For a while, celebrity magazine editors could stick a Kardashian picture on a cover and guarantee big sales. No more, apparently. In April of 2014, Kim in a wedding dress and Kanye dressed to kill, graced the cover of Vogue. There was also a picture spread inside, featuring the couple and baby North. Reportedly, Kanye had pulled out all the stops to get the cover. Hype surrounded the launch and some predicted that the issue would sell a record breaking 500,000 copies. At the end of the day, the number was more like 250,000, including some 45,000 that Vogue gave away free. It's not just Vogue. As Newsburner reported at the end of 2013, the Kardashians are no longer a ticket to big magazine sales. “None of the Kardashians, either alone or together, is selling.”
6 The Kanye Factor - Nail In The Coffin?
Let's face it. Kanye West is not the world's most lovable character. He pitches fits, on and off stage, and many feel his career has been on a downward slide for some time. He's a regular on just about any rudest celebrities lists. Some journalists have even been saying that Kim's marriage to Kanye has contributed to the fall in her popularity. Newsburner reported one magazine publisher as saying ,"I think it’s because Kanye West is so nasty and aggressive. People don’t like him. It’s rubbed off on Kim. It’s rubbed off on the whole family.” Maybe the whole Kim/Kanye thing was a big mistake, as some have said that Kanye's popularity has taken a nose dive because of Kim. Perez Hilton reported that Kanye's Q-Score was down from a 17 to 3 in the wake of Kim. That's really bad.
5 Too Much Of The Kardashians? Overkill & The Boredom Factor
Let's face it, trends come and go. Once, Twitter was "the" hot thing and Facebook was the king of the social media hill. But both have seemingly peaked and are losing numbers. The same can be said of the Kardashians. Some might have advised them to ease up, take a break from all the frenetic rush for TV contracts and endorsement deals. But it has been as if they were hell bent on raking in as much money as they could. Make hay while the sun shines. That's all well and good, but 7 years of Kardashian saturation? As Marc Berman of TV Media Insights said in a Newsburner article, “It’s simple — overkill. The Kardashians are everywhere. They never take a break.” And signs are that the boredom factor has well and truly set in.
4 Bruce Jenner - Stealing The Spotlight?
All the news, speculation and rumors surrounding Bruce Jenner's transitioning into a woman has, quite frankly, stolen the spotlight. Of course, the rumor mongers say that Kim is furious with all the attention paid to Bruce. Whether or not that's true, the spotlight is firmly on Bruce. The Canada Journal reported “Kim has only been on one and a half (tabloid) covers in 2015. Neither Life & Style, OK!, Us Weekly nor People have had her on their cover once this year. But Bruce has been on four In Touch covers, two Us Weekly covers and a People cover.”
3 Anything For A Buck: Too Many Bad Decisions & A Sinking Ship?
Take Sears. At the end of 2011, they launched the Kardashian clothing line featuring Kim, Kourtney, and Khloe. It has not been a great success. The New York Post called it one of the worst celebrity fashion collaborations ever. To begin with, there's the idea of the filthy rich Kardashians and Sears in fashion bed together. It just doesn't seem to mesh somehow. Anyway, shoppers have stayed away in droves and Sears has continued to post losses. Then there's the personal appearance fiasco. Kim got paid to show up at a nightclub in Charlotte, North Carolina (hardly New York City) called Hush. 50 (count 'em) people showed up. Reportedly, Kim stormed out. And don't forget the Kardashian Mastercard and their endorsement of Quick Trim diet aid. Both resulted in law suits. Some ask where the adult leadership is hiding. No, not Kris Jenner, with her flop of a talk show and reportedly gold-digging toy boy.
2 Age, Age, Age
We first encountered Kim as a fresh-faced 20-something out on the town with her BFF Paris Hilton. We now have a Kim approaching her mid-30's, seemingly doing more and more over the top outrageous things to get attention. As one uncharitable soul said, these days she has to take her clothes off to get on the cover of a magazine (Paper Magazine, Break the Internet). And then there's the Botox frozen face, bare nipples in Paris, and blonde hair that makes her look like a Draco Malfoy (Harry Potter) clone. And what about reports that she spends upwards of $1 million a year on enhancing and maintaining her beauty? Some have said that the pictures of her at Paris Fashion Week were just sad and more than a little bizarre. She is just plain out trying to hard to stay in the spotlight.
1 Last Kardashians Standing
Well, we all know that Bruce Jenner won't be back on Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Rumor has it that model Kendall Jenner is being advised to stay away, lest it hurt her career by association. Kim seems more and more tied up in the Kimye world. Kris Jenner is beginning to look like a sad cougar. Rob K. has been keeping his distance, due to his own problems and struggles. Scott Disick is busy checking into rehab and missing personal appearances. Is it any wonder that Kris Jenner is reportedly urging Khloe to reconcile with Lamar Odom for the 10th series? There aren't many Kardashians left! At last count, Kris and the sisters. Girls together just doesn't sound all that exciting.
