Boy meets girl, girl meets boy - they fall in love and live happily ever after. Sound familiar? From a young age, we are practically raised to believe in love at first sight, finding our soul mate and living happily ever after. Even our favorite childhood Disney characters showed us what it meant to find true love and how, once it was found, it could never be broken. As we grew older, this idea of romance and happily ever after seemingly became just an illusion. Additionally, many of our favorite celebrity couples succumbed to the temptations of Hollywood, Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt and recently, Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin, it seems we've become accustomed to the idea that a successful Hollywood romance is one that, if lucky, usually only lasts five years. But amidst all the Hollywood breakups, makeups and divorces, there arises a few notable couples who have managed to exemplify the idea of real romance, living their own happily ever afters’. From how they met, to how they keep their love alive, we outline the top six sigh-worthy celebrity love stories.
6 Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck (2003)
When we think of a modern day princess, Jennifer Garner may be the first to come to mind. Not only does she seem to exemplify the kindness usually only found in a Disney classic, but she married one of Hollywood’s most eligible bachelors, Ben Affleck – and the couple’s romance has been nothing short of a fairy-tale. After initially meeting on the set of Pearl Harbour, the two came together again to film the movie Daredevil. While the movie may have been a box-office bust, the budding romance between the two Hollywood darlings was far from. Jen says that Ben wooed her with emails and his “persuasive writing.” The avid baseball-lovers showcased their down-to-earth nature for the first time at a Red Sox game in Boston. Ben officially sealed the deal after proposing to Jen on her 33rd birthday. Eleven years and three children later, the couple is frequently caught canoodling outside of malls and theaters. Ben stunned when he purchased a pair of pink and white diamond Harry Winston bands in celebration of their two daughters. It seems as though the honeymoon has never ended for these parents.
5 Victoria & David Beckham (1997)
When Britain’s pop princess and soccer superstar met in 1997 at a Manchester United charity match, it seemed to be a dream come true for both. David Beckham says, “my wife picked me out of a sticker book, and I chose her off the telly.” After keeping the relationship a secret for three months and sharing their first kiss in the car park of a local restaurant, the couple became labeled “Posh and Becks” and began a relationship that would last for more than 15 years. Not without scandal, in 2004 the media claimed that Becks was having an affair with his assistant. Despite further accusations, Victoria stood by her man throughout the entire ordeal and after moving to the United States, it is safe to say the couple has solidified itself as one of Hollywood’s most acclaimed couples – with the cutest kids, we should add.
4 Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves (2006)
The only way such a good-looking man can be locked down? By marrying an equally gorgeous Brazilian model. It’s slightly hard to believe that someone might not recognize Matthew McConaughey – but that is precisely what happened when Camila Alves was introduced to the Hollywood hunk at Hyde bar in 2006. “He had a really long beard, and this Rasta hat,” Camila has admitted. Matthew attributes his infatuation with the model to love at first sight and awed the world with his touching speech at the 2014 Academy Award when he cited his wife as his inspiration. The two have three children together and a seemingly long, happy future to look forward to together - unlike many celebrities, Matthew has said, “when I marry, I intend to stay married.” Sigh.
3 Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie (2004)
One of the most controversial couples of twentieth century, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie famously met on the set of Mr. & Mrs. Smith while Brad was still married to America’s sweetheart, Jennifer Aniston. After many years of intense scrutiny, the couple’s love has successfully swayed the world into admitting that, despite an undying affection for Aniston, perhaps Angelina and Brad really are meant to be together. Angelina admits to falling in love with Brad on set, but stays true to the statement that she and Brad were just very good friends until, “life developed into a way where we could be together, where it felt like something we should do.” Since 2004, the duo has been nothing short of Hollywood’s power couple - six children, and despite all odds, still maintaining their initial chemistry. In fact, Brad refuses to do sex scenes with any other woman. He famously cites walking into his house, seeing Angelina and hearing Zahara say, “daddy, you’re not going to start making out with mommy again, are you?” If Zahara’s adorable comment is any indication, Hollywood's ruling couple will be in power for many years to come.
2 Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman (2005)
Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman have probably surpassed more obstacles in their nine years of marriage than any of the other couples on this list. Rehab, addiction and public scrutiny defined their first few years as a couple and, while other couples may be torn apart, these obstacles have seemingly made the two closer than ever. After meeting at G’Day LA in 2005, an event that honors Australians, Nicole has famously admitted to not even realizing that her future husband was interested in her– in fact, it took him four months to call her and ask her out. The couple is famous for their private and public declarations of love. Not only does Keith write a love letter for every night he is away from her, the record, Get Closer was written as a musical-love letter to Nicole. Parents to two beautiful daughters, the couple named their first daughter Sunday-Rose as a testament to the concept that, before Nicole, Keith saw Sundays’ as the loneliest day of the week. However, after meeting his wife, it became a day of family, connectedness and love. Nicole and Keith have proven that a strong enough bond is enough to overcome Hollywood’s worst.
1 Matt Damon and Luciana Barroso (2003)
It is a classic, modern Cinderella story –substitute the prince for a famous, handsome celebrity and Cinderella for a beautiful bartender and you have Matt Damon and Luciana Barroso – a modern day love story. Matt Damon, tired from filming the chick flick, Stuck on You in Miami, Florida, was quite literally dragged to a nearby bar by a few of his on-set friends - a decision that would change his life. “I ended up at a bar where my wife was the bartender. I literally saw her across a crowded room”, Matt Damon says of that evening. She wasn’t famous, she wasn’t rich – it was the epitome of love at first sight. Over the years and three children later, that love continues to grow. The couple has a ‘two-week’ rule – the longest amount of time Matt is allowed to be away from the family and a rule that the two take so seriously, it has stopped Matt from accepting various movie roles. “I hit the jackpot with my wife…she is my soul mate, I don’t like being away from her,” he says.
