The Hobbit trilogy has, till now, cost around $561 million to make. As per the financial documents of the movies that were filed in New Zealand, where all the three movies are being made, the production has thus far cost $561 million, which is almost double the amount that was spent on The Lord Of The Rings trilogy. This significant amount comprises of the major shoots with the actors however, it is estimated that there will be extra post-production costs by the time the next two Hobbit movies are completed.
To date, only the first movie of the series has been released, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. However, according to director Peter Jackson as well as distributor Warner Bros, the money is well spent, since the franchise has proved to be very lucrative as the first movie grossed $1,017,003,568 at the box office.
