Chris Pine is a hugely popular actor who has appeared in plenty of blockbuster movies, enough to make him a household name. He is known for often taking on slightly quirkier roles alongside those headline films, giving him an interesting reputation across the board. His leading man looks certainly don’t hurt, and neither does his place in the Star Trek franchise, earning him a place at conventions for the rest of his life even if he never works in Hollywood again. In time, he could probably do Priceline.com commercials just like his predecessor, William Shatner. Perhaps he is a little above that, but money talks when the job opportunities start to run dry in Tinseltown.
But what do you really know about this actor with his twinkling blue eyes? Are you aware of who his parents are? Hint: you really should be. How about knowing what his (kind of embarrassing) first role was? The good news is that we have all of that information, and more, here for you to browse. You can look at this as kind of a mini-Chris Pine encyclopedia.
He certainly has his own army of fans (more on them later), but even the most dedicated of fans has probably missed a fact or two along the way. We have scoured the darkest reaches of the internet to find and bring to you the most fascinating Chris Pine facts that you aren’t likely to know yet. Ready to learn more about this actor than you ever imagined? Read on!
17 He Studied In England
You wouldn’t expect this All-American leading male to have any other cultural ties, but actually he spent a whole year studying abroad in the UK. He went to the University of Leeds, well-known in the country for its reputation as the kind of place where serious parties go down. He said he enjoyed the night life and also getting the chance to study there, but we can guess about which one he enjoyed the most. He was also partial to a late-night pasty while he was there, so he certainly got very much into the local scene. This is a great asset for an actor who might one day be called upon to act in a film set in that location or with co-stars who are from there. We’d love to get a little more information about his time in Leeds as he almost certainly has some great stories to tell!
16 His First Role Was On E.R.
So what was his first role? He actually played a drunk patient on E.R., famous as a starting point for many actors. This one wasn’t exactly one to put in the hall of fame, however. He was called Levine in the show, and only had one moment of speaking lines. What he had to say was this: "I got drunk at a Valentine's Day party. It was a blow-out. It was icky." Wow. What gold. Anyway, the footage of this historic moment is available online (and of course you can also grab those old E.R. DVDs if you want to watch it back). As far as being a first place to start, we guess it could have been worse, but it certainly didn’t hint of anything great that might have been to come. Who knew that this small role would go to the man who was later sitting in Captain Kirk’s chair?
15 His Family Are Acting Legacy
Chris might not have been interested in acting when he was growing up, but that was largely because he was exposed to it so much as a child that it seemed totally normal and boring to him. His father was actor Robert Pine, while his mother, Gwynne Gilford, also had her time in the spotlight. It’s actually no surprise that they were actors, either, since his grandfather and grandmother were both in the acting business too. Max Gilford and Anne Gwynne were their names, and Max was an entertainment lawyer who certainly got to know the leading names of the time. For her part, Anne starred in more than 60 films, and was one of the original scream queens back in the 1940s. Chris says that he first tried to stay away from acting, but his potential was undeniable, and with the contacts his family had it wouldn’t have made sense to go in any other direction.
14 His Fans Are Intense
If you are a Chris Pine fan, then you may not even know this about yourself: you are referred to as a "Pine Nut." As far as fan names go it works pretty well – having the double meaning of a delicious foodstuff and of course someone who is just crazy about Chris. Still, it’s one of the best and funniest out there, and he has definitely embraced the term himself. He has been known to use it in interviews and isn’t shy about answering questions on his fan base. If that wasn’t enough, the Pine Nuts have become a sort of force of their own, often known to support charitable causes that Chris has indicated an interest in, as well as attending his plays and professional appearances around the world in large numbers. They even have their own website where they organise meetings and charitable acts in his name.
13 He’s Been Arrested
While he may look squeaky clean, Chris Pine has actually had a brush on the wrong side of the law. He was filming Z for Zachariah back in 2014 in New Zealand when he was pulled over by the police. He was subjected to a roadside breath alcohol test, which he proceeded to fail, and he ended up pleading guilty to drink driving. He had drunk around four glasses of alcohol, which was more than enough to put him over the limit. He was given a six month prohibition from driving in New Zealand and paid a $93 fine. The only reason the sentence was so light was because of the fact that he had a previously clean sheet and the judged deemed his actions to be out of character. Here’s hoping he never does it again, and sets a good example for those "Pine Nuts" of his instead.
12 He Loves Shoes
As it turns out, Chris Pine has a bit of a shoe fetish. Women’s shoes, in particular. We’ll let him tell it in his own words: “Not to wear, just to look at,” he says. “A good pair of heels on a beautiful woman is a sight to behold.” Well, there you go – anyone out there with a shoe fetish is in fantastic company, as Chris can certainly agree with you. We won’t delve into this one any more in fear of what we might discover, but at least Chris regularly finds himself on the red carpet – a notable place to discover the finest and most expensive shoes, normally worn by the most beautiful women. What a lucky man to get to have his fetish played out in front of him on a regular basis! We bet that he just lets his gorgeous girlfriends walk all over him… (sorry!)
11 He Plays Tennis
One of the things that probably gets Chris Pine a fair few roles is his amazing physique – he’s pretty buff, particularly given that he doesn’t look like that might be the case when he’s suited up. He plays tennis to maintain his fitness, calling it “vanity” rather than sport. But it’s not just playing the game that keeps him fit. He also says that wanting to perform better on the courts in turn motivates him to avoid smoking, which can reduce your lung capacity – very important for tennis – and drinking too much coffee. This all seems a bit simplistic and he’s probably also very careful with his diet as well as incorporating other exercises into his regime, but that’s all he has been willing to divulge so far. Still, it’s great to know what he does to keep fit and stop himself from being tempted by the unhealthy habits that tackle even the best actors.
10 He’s Afraid Of The Dark
One thing that you probably don’t associate with a buff leading man who gets into plenty of action sequences, and also is famous for playing a headstrong captain, is a good old-fashion phobia. When asked in an interview whether he could sleep with the lights turned off, Chris Pine admitted that he’s really not comfortable with the idea of doing so. Well, that certainly dispels any impression of toughness that he may have made in the past! Actually, it’s probably not so unusual for an actor to have this fear, as an overactive imagination can cause darkness to seem far more terrifying than it really is. Combine that with the crazed fans and paparazzi who are an occupational hazard, and it’s easy to see why someone might prefer to leave the lights on while they drop off to sleep. It might also explain why some of his relationships have been rather short-lived.
9 He’s Friends With Spock
Take a look at the extras on the DVD for the first Star Trek movie, and you’ll see a gag reel which mostly consists of Zachary Quinto and Chris Pine generally horsing around together. There’s a big reason for that – they were actually friends even before they got cast in their roles, thanks to the fact that they worked out in the same place. "It wasn't even a gym, it was a friend's kitchen. That was the funny thing. We had the same trainer who was a friend of ours before he was either of our trainers, and now we work out at the same gym," Quinto said in an interview. It turns out it really is a small world after all – and even more so when you realise that Chris Pine’s father once starred in an episode of the Star Trek television series. Or maybe it’s just Hollywood that’s small!
8 He Always Carries A Beard Brush
Yes, really. Apparently Chris travels everywhere with a beard brush, which he considers to be a key grooming item. He once said, “I got one of my favourite beard brushes which is just something from a department store... (in New Zealand) that I use all the time." So there you have it – if you want his style, don’t worry about splashing out – you can just get something from any old store. In fact, it doesn’t even have to be something that was built for the purpose – he later told Allure, "It's about finding the right beard brush. I was out of town recently and got a shoe-brush polisher for my beard. It's a bit rougher than usual, but it's good at shaping it. I could talk beard all day." Apparently no one gets between Chris Pine and his beard, even if it has been looking a little grey around the edges lately.
7 He’s The Youngest Captain
When he put on the yellow jumper as Captain Kirk, Chris Pine became the youngest actor ever to do so – something he was able to pull off since the films took the decision to start from the younger years of the captain’s life. Interestingly enough, that’s not the only thing which is remarkable about his age when being cast in this role. At 28 years old, he is also the first ever Captain Kirk to have been born after the series began. In other words, he is starring in a series which has been going for longer than he has been alive. That’s a pretty impressive thing to add to your resume, and gives him a legacy which goes far beyond that of most of his other roles. He actually wrote to William Shatner before filming began and asked for advice about the role, resulting in Shatner giving him his blessing and wishing him good luck in the captain’s chair.
6 He Could Have Been In Avatar
Back in 2008, he caused quite a stir with his successful audition for Star Trek. Word started to spread even before the film was released: if this was a man who could impress enough to take that role, what else could he do? As a result, he auditioned for a lot of other films, including just narrowly missing out on the role of Green Lantern that went to Ryan Reynolds. He also auditioned for Avatar, one of the biggest films of 2009. Perhaps fortunately for him, given subsequent views on the film, he gave what he described as perhaps the worst audition of his career. Apparently, when he went in for Jake Sully, his work was so bad that he gave up halfway through to shake the director’s hand and walk away. It’s interesting to consider how his career could have gone if he had been awarded the role after all – and Sam Worthington is probably very pleased that things went the way that they did.
5 Stay Away From His Eyebrows
Chris says that he doesn’t mind doing things for a role to transform himself physically to fit the part. He has had his beard trimmed into different shapes and worn make-up all over his whole body. He has trained with weights and given up pasta to change his physique into the required shape. But there is one thing that he just will not do, and that is change anything about his eyebrows. Apparently, it’s due to poor experiences in the past. "When I first started out, everyone thought they were too much. In my first job, they dyed them. Then another tried to pluck them, and that looked awful. Now I won't let them touch my eyebrows," he told Allure. It’s funny that he actually has very striking and unique eyebrows – the kind of feature which makes him more memorable as an actor, rather than something that should be changed or removed.
4 His Earning Power Only Keeps Going Up
His ability to command large sums from studios has gone up hugely over recent years, due to his inclusion in the Star Trek franchise as well as other big roles during the same time period. Case in point? His salary for the first Star Trek movie back in 2009 was just $600,000, with unnamed bonuses as a result of the film doing well. Then he received $1.5 million for Into Darkness, with another $500,000 bonus because of the good box office performance. If that was not enough of a jump, he was then paid an incredible $6 million for Beyond. Even if he had not been working on anything else during that time it would be the kind of salary that most people dream of, but he has also been involved in other blockbusters and has recently joined the Wonder Woman cast for what may well be an ongoing franchise role.
3 He Believes In Karma
Here’s what Pine had to say when he was asked about religion: “I believe in luck and fate and I believe in karma, that the energy you put out in the world comes back to meet you. So if you have positive good energy, hopefully good things will come to you from the universe… I definitely have a spiritual outlook… I am not a religious guy, I am probably agnostic. The more you are positive and say I want to have a good life, the more you build that reality for yourself; by creating the life that you want. It is not always the case that things will fall into your lap or that life will be great, but it is all about perspective and having a positive outlook. If something goes wrong, you say, ‘That happened for a reason, what can I learn from that and how can I grow?'”
2 He Lives In Los Feliz
Chris Pine has a home in the super trendy Los Angeles neighbourhood of Los Feliz. He is in very good company there, with some of his neighbours including such names as Scarlett Johansson, Brad Pitt, Ryan Reynolds, Mark Ruffalo, Kristen Stewart, and Robert Pattinson. It’s a very expensive place to live, too, but consider the amount of money he’s pulling in, that shouldn’t be a problem. This goes along very nicely with his persona: he is known to be very quiet about his personal life and claims not to understand why anyone would even have any interest in it. He also doesn’t get why people want to take pictures of him or have his autograph. This is probably as a result of growing up with actors and knowing their lives aren’t any more exciting than that of normal people in private! Either that or he’s just professing some false modesty.
1 He Talks To Himself
Anyone that was still thinking of dating Chris Pine by this point (you were probably turned off by the darkness phobia, but got your head back in the game when you read his earnings) should know about one more habit that he admits to. He talks to himself – a lot. He does it out loud, and he even talks about personal problems – which is tricky if anyone manages to bug his car, apparently, as they might hear a lot of secrets. “I talk to myself, especially in the car. I do it to work through ideas, or if I'm pissed off. I use the interior of the car like it's a [therapist's office],” he says. In other words, if he walks away from you looking calm but then sits in his car and starts shouting, you’ve probably annoyed him. Just one thing to watch out for if you do manage to meet up.
