Is there a hidden warning embedded in The Real Housewives Bravo contract that states one of the side effects of being a cast member of the reality show may be greater chance of divorce for you and your husband?
It seems as though some kind of "Housewives' Curse" has evolved over the many years of the extremely popular reality series.
It seems that since the birth of the Real Housewives franchise in 2006, the number of housewives that are no longer actual 'wives' or have a different husband than the one they began filming the show with is steadily rising. There is at least one housewife on each city's franchise that has been through a divorce since being cast on the show.
Is it the cameras being around all the time? Zooming in on parts of their lives that maybe they don't want to focus on? Becoming a Real Housewives cast member means letting America inside the doors to your house, your life, and your drama.
16 Vicki and Donn Gunvalson
Vicki is the OG of the Real Housewives, joining the cast on the first season of the first city, Orange County. Vicki and Donn Gunvalson were married for 15 years before they announced their divorce in 2010, despite the couple renewing their vows just one year earlier in 2009. It was clear to viewers that the marriage was not as happy and healthy as they claimed as the show dug deeper into their family lives. The divorce was rumored to have gotten pretty nasty, with Vicki ending up having to pay her ex-husband almost $1 million in divorce settlement.
She later went on to date southern gent, Brooks Ayers, who ended up being accused of actually faking cancer and falsifying medical records. Boy, she sure knows how to pick them.
15 Tamra and Simon Barney
Fellow O.C. cast member and housewife BFF, Tamra Judge (current last name), is currently married to Eddie Judge. The couple is featured on the TV series and are seen owning and running their own exercise studio. However, prior to Eddie, there was Simon, Tamra's ex-husband and the first man to stand by Tamra's side at the start of her Real Housewives journey.
Simon and Tamra were married for 11 years, until 2010. The couple claimed verbal abuse, infidelity, disloyalty, and other accusations as to why their marriage could not work. The couple have three children together, and Tamra has one other son from a previous (previous) marriage.
Viewers of the reality series saw the downward spiral of the marriage right before their eyes. Simon and Tamra were constantly butting heads, until they finally announced their impending divorce. The couple continues to have issues regarding the custody of their children.
14 Adrienne Maloof and Dr. Paul Nassif
Over in Beverly Hills, viewers got accompanied to the light banter and seemingly fun relationship between businesswoman Adrienne Maloof and plastic surgeon Dr. Paul Nassif. The couple wed in 2002 in Beverly Hills. But after a few seasons on the Bravo show, banter turned to bickering, which turned to nasty fighting and the couple were no longer seeing eye to eye. The couple have three young children together, which has caused a nasty custody battle to ensue.
Paul is actually the star of his own reality series on the E! Network called Botched. He co-stars with Heather Dubrow's plastic surgeon husband, Terry Dubrow. The dynamic duo work on repairing the most difficult and most shocking botched plastic surgeries.
13 Taylor and Russell Armstrong
This Beverly Hills couple had one of the most tragic ends to their marriage in Housewives history. Taylor and Russell Armstrong never appeared to have a very close relationship throughout the filming of the show. Problems within their marriage were definitely rising to the surface and being played out on the reality series when tragedy struck the Armstrong's home.
In 2011, Russell was found dead from an apparent suicide by hanging in a friend's Los Angeles home. The couple had one daughter together, Kennedy.
12 Camille and Kelsey Grammer
Fellow Beverly Hills Housewife, Camille Grammer, made her Real Housewives debut in 2010. It was just one year later, on an episode of the show, that she announced Kelsey had been unfaithful and she wanted out of the marriage.
After her divorce, it was announced that Camille would not be returning for the 3rd season of the Beverly Hills franchise. Camille returned to acting and caring for their children. Kelsey Grammer has since remarried.
11 Lynne and Frank Curtin
Lynne was a cast member for two seasons on The Real Housewives of Orange County. And boy, was that time filled with juicy drama.
Who can forget when her daughter Raquel answered the door in a blanket only to discover that her family was being evicted from their home? Lynne was completely clueless to the family's financial situation and Frank was less than honest about it.
Oh and I wonder how Lynne's bracelet line is doing?
Anyhoo, after Lynne left the show, she filed for divorce from her husband, Frank, in 2012. The official documents cite "irreconcilable differences."
10 Countess Luann & Count Alexandre de Lesseps
The Countess is one of the most well-known Housewives, making a name for herself on the New York edition of the show. Countess Luann was married to Alexandre de Lesseps, a French entrepreneur. Luann was the Count's fourth wife.
The Countess has been on the series since Season 1 of New York. The couple divorced in 2009. Apparently, one of the causes for the divorce was the rumored affair Alexandre was said to be having with Ethiopian Princess Kemeria Abajobir Abajifar.
In Season 7, Luann was demoted to a recurring role on the series and is no longer considered to be a main cast member. Luann still goes by "The Countess" as a "courtesy title."
9 Bethenny Frankel and Jason Hoppy
Bravo fans watched Bethenny and Jason fall in love and get married over the course of the Real Housewives of New York and eventually on Bethenny's own Bravo spin-off series, Bethenny Getting Married? and Bethenny Ever After.
The 'Honeymoon Phase' of this couple's relationship did not last long, and soon it seemed that there was trouble in paradise. A smart businesswoman and creator of her own brand, Skinny Girl, even Bethenny admits to having being completely blindsided by her marriage that led to a tumultuous divorce. Frankel and Hoppy were married for nearly three years, after being wed at the Four Seasons in NYC in 2010. The couple have one daughter together, Bryn, age three.
8 Ramona and Mario Singer
Fans of the New York Real Housewives were shocked last year when they heard that Ramona and Mario were getting a divorce. The reason - He had an affair! Turns out, good ol' Mario was cheating on his wife of 20 years with a young personal trainer (typical).
The divorce was finalized in November of 2015. Although Mario did try to go after a lot of Ramona's money and the couple's many properties, Ramona was able to keep the couple’s Manhattan condo and their Southampton mansion.
Ramona has since wrote a book entitle, Life on the Ramona Coster. In the memoir, the reality star admitted to popping pills and contemplating suicide in the midst of her marital crisis. “The stress of everything became unmanageable and it began to wreak havoc on my mind, body and spirit,” she wrote. “There were times when I was so low that I almost felt like throwing myself in front of a subway train.”
7 Michaele and Tareq Salahi
Who could forget the infamous cast members of the Real Housewives of DC who were the reason why there was only ONE SEASON of DC, Michaele and Tareq Salahi. These two narcissistic, social climbing nit wits were the ones in every newspaper a few years ago back in 2011 for crashing the White House State Dinner.
The couple received major backlash for their little stint at the White House and were going to be investigated federally for their trespassing. The couple didn't make it through the scandal unscathed. In 2011 papers were quietly filed for the couple's divorce.
However, news broke when Tariq dramatically and publicly claimed that Michaele had been kidnapped by a stalker. Soon after, it was revealed that Michaele had, in fact, gone back to a former flame, guitarist Neal Schon of the band Journey.
6 Nene and Gregg Leakes
Real Housewives of Atlanta OG, Nene Leakes, was married to Gregg Leakes, consultant and real estate investor. The couple's relationship problems were a focal point of the show and tensions were rising between the two.
Gregg has five children from a previous marriage, and Nene struggled to have a relationship with the children. However, it was implied that a wondering eye was the true cause of divorce for the couple.
The couple actually re-married Gregg in 2013. The Real Housewives of Atlanta star reveals that she thinks the couple’s divorce in 2010 was necessary for them to get to a better place. “I have been with Gregg for 18 years now, since 1996. We broke up for a year and a half and I always say that was a great year and a half for us. We needed that breakup,” says NeNe. “When we met that day in 1996, we’ve been together every day since. We needed to break up. I needed to see what else was going on. He needed to see what else was going on. I think we both learned a lot and I’m happy we found our way back to each other.”
5 Dina and Tommy Manzo
Cast member of The Real Housewives of New Jersey, Dina Manzo, married Tommy Manzo during a simple ceremony of 600 guests that cost a mere $1.1 million.
Tommy never made an appearance on the Real Housewives show. Dina claimed it was due to a busy business schedule and desire for privacy. During their marriage, there had always been suspicions of other women and infidelity.
In 2014 Dina announced on Twitter that the couple had been separated, and that they were now filing for divorce, "My secret...I have been separated since October, my heart hurts but Tommy & I will always share a very special love."
4 Marysol Patton and Philippe Pautesta-Herder
The Real Housewives of Miami cast member, Marysol Patton — the president of a Miami public relations firm — is known on the show to be a little man crazy.
On the show, she had been dating French businessman Philippe Pautesta-Herder. They married in front of Bravo cameras during an intimate ceremony in March of 2010 in Aspen, Co.
Rumors spread that the businessman was only interested in Patton for the purposes of a green card. Shortly after, Patton decided she was ready to end her marriage.
Patton gave her side of the story regarding her split in an interview with Wet Paint. “You’re going to see me going through a very difficult transition in my personal life with my now-ex-husband,” she tells Wetpaint of what fans can expect to see on the show. “It plays out in the show. You’ll see the separation, the going back and forth and deciding whether we would get divorced, but in the end, we just get divorced.”
Well, that was short-lived.
3 Phaedra Parks and Apollo Nida
Viewers of The Real Housewives of Atlanta saw this relationship come and go within a few years. Sadly, shortly after the couple were married in 2009, Apollo was sent to jail.
Apollo Nida is currently serving time at Fort Dix in New Jersey while Parks and their family lives in the Atlanta, Georgia area.
Nida is in prison for bank fraud and his sentence is for 8 years. Coincidentally he is serving time in the same facility as Real Housewives of New Jersey star Joe Giudice. Oh look, they can be friends.
2 Porsha Williams and Kordell Stewart
NFL star Kordell Stewart and star of The Real Housewives of Atlanta Porsha Williams had a short lived marriage from 2011 until 2013.
Porsha claims she took none of Stewart's NFL earnings, because she neither needed nor wanted them. Tabloids are claiming that Kordell cheated on Porsha during the time of their marriage.
1 Yolanda and David Foster
Perhaps the most recent of Real Housewives divorces - David Foster and Yolanda Hadid (she is already going by her previous married name; wants the same last name as her children) announced in April that they would be calling it quits after four years of marriage.
Yolanda has publicly struggled with Lyme's Disease since 2012. Yolanda and David seemed to have the perfect and most envious of marriages. Foster told Andy Cohen when calling in to Watch What Happens Live tonight, "Unfortunately it was not strong enough to withstand the circumstances that came our way," she continued, and when asked if her Lyme disease played a role in the decision, she admitted that it definitely made things harder for the pair.
David Foster received a lot of backlash after the divorce announcement for supposedly leaving his wife during her time of need. When he finally broke his silence he said, "Over the past few weeks, a great deal of inaccurate or baseless information has been reported claiming to represent my thoughts and feelings," the Grammy-winning music producer, 66, told Us. "It is painful to watch this happen repeatedly — especially while trying to cope with the personal nature of the challenges surrounding the breakup of our loving marriage."
