Ah, just when we thought Sunday nights would be boring without Game of Thrones, Kim Kardashian bestowed upon us one of the most entertaining Sunday nights in recent history. We should all praise Kim K for a major, major celeb feud: #KimExposedTaylorParty.
I will be the first to admit that maybe there are “more important” things to be talking about right now instead of a feud between queen of songs that get stuck in your head, Taylor Swift, and queen of selfies, Kim Kardashian. France is dealing with yet another terrorist attack. America is in the middle of a very dramatic election, in which Donald Trump just officially nabbed the GOP presidential nomination at the Republican Convention. This is literally one day after his wife, Melania Trump, plagiarized Michelle Obama’s speech nearly word from word. Other than that, there’s the whole Brexit, gun control, and #blacklivesmatter issues still going on.
So yes, I’m aware of these things going on, as you should be too, but if you’re interested in the Kim K and Taylor throw down, don’t fret. In these stressful times, people need an escape. For some, it may be playing Pokémon Go. For others, it may be reading about #KimExposedTaylorParty. Whatever release we choose, we shouldn't judge people for where they find their entertainment.
Now that we know it’s okay to be interested in and entertained by this celeb feud despite everything else going on in the world, we can get down to the business of the actual feud. We live in a fast paced world of social media so once something happens, it can easily explode into a huge situation. With other celebrities jumping into the drama via Twitter and other forms of social media, it’s hard to keep track of who is on whose side and what’s really going on. Below is a step by step breakdown of the #KimExposedTaylorParty, how it all went down and who is on whose side.
I know, guys. This is old news, but a little refresher might be nice. During the 2009 MTV VMAs, Taylor won Best Female Video for “You Belong With Me”. At this point, she was the young Taylor with long, curly blonde hair. She looked like a wide-eyed puppy. This was long before her squad and many, many high profile relationships.
When young Taylor took to the stage to accept said award, Kanye grabbed the mic and infamously said, "Yo Taylor, I'm really happy for you, I'll let you finish, but Beyoncé has one of the best videos of all time. One of the best videos of all time!" And so, the feud began, along with a ton of media coverage surrounding the event. Kanye's speech was mimicked and it still is to this day. Taylor happily accepted the role of the victim, which played well with her brand of writing about all the boys who had broken her heart. As a media stunt, it worked marvelously for both of their brands.
While Kanye was definitely made into a villain for stealing a young girl's spotlight, I have to admit, I still remember Beyoncé's video for "Single Ladies" while Taylor's "You Belong With Me" is something I easily forget. So, like, maybe Kanye had a point.
After he stole her spotlight, Kanye did do the gentlemanly thing. He publicly apologized on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. He also called up Taylor and personally apologized to her. You'd think with the amount of press the incident brought the two and with the public apology, everything would be cool between the two of them, but no.
Taylor went on to write a song about Kanye, because, really, who hasn't Taylor written a song about? The lyrics to "Innocent" are said to be about her experience with Kanye at the VMAs. In fact, the following year, she sang "Innocent" at the VMAs with footage of his interruption projected during the beginning of the song. So, that leaves little up to interpretation.
Guys, we're so close to getting to the drama of today. Just one more thing from the past. I promise.
Since the whole VMA incident, Taylor and Kanye had been spotted at several awards ceremonies talking and laughing with each other. They seemed like they might be, dare we say it, friends. In 2015, she even presented Kanye MTV’s Video Vanguard Award. In her introduction speech, she joked about the whole VMA ordeal all of those years ago.
Months later, she posted to Instagram a photo of a huge flower arrangement that Kanye sent her. It seemed Taylor and Kanye were on good terms. Ah, we can all relax. We no longer have to pick sides. Everything seemed to be fine in the music world, until...
On Kanye's newest record, The Life of Pablo, the song "Famous" takes a pretty obvious swing at Taylor. The lyrics are: "I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex/Why? I made that bitch famous." Whether you find the lyric to be funny or not, you can probably see how they are also distasteful to some extant. Upon the release of the album, everyone wanted to know what the hell Taylor Swift thought about these lyrics.
Because of the offensive nature of these lyrics, West stated that Taylor gave him permission to use them, but Taylor's reps denied that. Although, she didn't directly comment on the nature of the lyrics, she did continue to maintain that she never gave permission for Kanye to use them. To cling to the fact that she never gave permission infers that she doesn't approve of these lyrics, without her having to speak out about them.
So, at this point we have Kanye's word versus Taylor's word about these controversial lyrics.
6 Famous Backlash
Taylor went on accepted Album of the Year at The Grammys and, in her speech, said, "I want to say to all the young woman out there: There will be people along the way who will try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments, your fame." That was a clear clap back at Kanye in the most Taylor way. Taylor Swift seems to be a ninja at insulting someone without ever saying their name.
Oh, and then on top of the distasteful nature of the lyrics, Kanye dropped a video for the song, featuring a nude wax model of Taylor Swift. Rhianna and George W. Bush were also naked so Taylor certainly wasn't alone, but if she didn't approve of those lyrics, she most likely didn't approve of her bare nipples in Kanye's video.
By the way guys, if you're keeping score at this point, Taylor wrote a whole song about the experience with Kanye but didn't use his name. There seemed to be no problem with that. Kanye used his experience with Taylor for two salacious lines of a song and everyone apparently lost their shit.
In an interview with GQ, Kim K said that Taylor was lying about not having given Kanye permission for the "Famous" lyrics. Kim even claimed that she had video evidence of Taylor giving her permission. In the article, it says that Taylor's rep declined to comment. Since they contacted Taylor's rep for a comment, it is likely that Taylor knew exactly when the article was going to come out.
Suddenly, the week the GQ piece was scheduled to come out, Taylor was seen with Tom Hiddleston and everyone lost their minds. She had only broken up with Calvin Harris, like, yesterday, so to be jumping into a relationship so soon and so publicly was shocking.
It's been theorized that Taylor did this is order to bury the Kim K interview and it pretty much worked. No one really talked about Kim's jab at Taylor, but instead everyone talked about the 4 million photos of Taylor and Hiddleston getting cozy. Well played, Tay Tay.
Since her GQ interview wasn't as widely discussed as one would have thought it would be, Kim K had to do something to bring attention to her huge Taylor reveal. Before Sunday's episode of KUWTK, Kim tweeted, "Wait it's legit National Snake Day?!?!? They have holidays for everybody, I mean everything these days!" It's largely believed that this was a veiled jab at Taylor Swift, as Calvin Harris fans have been bombarding Taylor's Instagram account with snake emojis.
In Sunday's episode of KUWTK, Kim received a phone call informing her that they do, in fact, have videos of Taylor giving her permission for Kanye to use the lyrics. After this, Kim goes to Kris, who instructs her to just call Taylor and talk it out - you know, like adults. Kim tells Kris that she doesn't plan on taking her advice. So, we were left with that, but it's not the end to this twisted media saga.
After the KUWTK episode, Kim took to Snapchat and posted the freaking videos. Of course, since that episode of KUWTK was filmed weeks or months ahead of time, we all know Kim was sitting on these videos so she could release them to line up with the episode. For everyone who thinks she is famous for doing nothing, this is why she is famous. She understands media attention better than almost anyone in the game.
There were several show segments and the conversation has clearly been cut down. Here is an excerpt from one of the earlier segments:
Kanye: "For all my South Side n***as that know me best/I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex."
Taylor: I'm like this close to overexposure.
Kanye: Oh, well, this one, I think this is a really cool thing to happen.
Side note: Guys, Taylor should be more embarrassed about having said "I'm this close to overexposure" rather than the fact that she lied about having given Kanye permission. That is a seriously lame thing to say about yourself.
The conversation goes on with Taylor saying that it's a compliment (kind of) and thanking Kanye for the flowers he sent her. She calls him a friend, like, twenty different times and thanks him for giving her the heads up. She even says, "And, you know, if people ask me about it, I think it would be great for me to be like. 'Look, he called me and told me the line before it came out. Like, joke's on you guys, we're fine.'"
After the videos were posted, sh*t got real.
5 Taylor's Botched Response
Of course, Tay Tay had to respond to these insane videos. She took to Instagram to post a note that addressed to videos. She claims that because Kanye never told her that he would be calling her "that b*tch," she didn't actually approve of the lyrics. She also never listened to the song before it was released.
This note was met with two issues from the media. Number one being that she has literally made a career of writing about her ex-lovers without permission and now she's upset that someone has written about her. Oh, the irony - or, is it hypocrisy?
The second issue has to do with the note itself. When you begin a new note, the button in the top left will read Local Notes. In the case of Taylor's note, it says Search, meaning she searched for the note and may have written it much earlier.
Furthermore, when you search, the words you searched for will sometimes be faded in the top left corner. In this case, the faded words are "because it doesn't exist." People are speculating that Taylor may have drafted the note after Kim's GQ interview and had written that the tapes don't exist, only to edit it after the tapes leaked.
If you think back to Kim's infamous nude selfie in March, you'll remember that Chloë Grace Moretz had a lot to say about Kim's failure to be a proper role model for young women. Clearly, she isn't the biggest fan of the Kardashians.
Enough with that drama though, and back to the drama at hand. Moretz tweeted, "Everyone in this industry needs to get their heads out of a hole and look around to realize what's ACTUALLY happening in the REAL world." Considering the timing, this was clearly referring to the Taylor/Kim ordeal.
Khloé is never one to let anyone talk badly about her family so she tweeted, "Is this the a hole you're referring to @ChloeGMoretz ???" with two photos - one of which was Moretz in a red bikini top and the second was a back shot in which her bottoms were to the side, exposing, well, a hole.
Lesson learned, don't mess with the Kardashians on Twitter unless you want your ass on Twitter.
4 More About The A Hole
Okay, so the a hole drama didn't just end there. Moretz replied to Khloe telling her that she should fact check because the photo of the exposed girl isn't her at all. Moretz then posted the photo of her in the red bikini, this time not just showing the top part. In the photo, a still from Neighbors 2, it is clear that Moretz has on a red bikini top and a blue bikini bottoms. So, whose bum did Khloé Kardashian just show all of us? Who the hell knows. That remains one of the mysterious of this celeb feud.
Ruby Rose then jumped into the mix, tweeting: "Yo Khloe I thought you were rad when I met you but this is awful and this is a 19 year old girl." Very good point, Ruby Rose. Also, let's all just refrain from posting bare butt photos on Twitter in the future. Now, away from the butt saga and back to the actual story...
3 Selena Screws Herself
Oh, Selena. She meant well. She just wanted to defend her bestie, but she ended up looking fairly dumb too.
Selena tweeted: "There are more important things to talk about... Why can't people use their voice for something that f***ing matters?" Um, yeah, so things got awkward when people very quickly pointed out that Selena, someone who has a voice in this world, has not said a single thing about #blacklivesmatter or the Orlando shooting, both of which one could assume Selena was referring to.
Selena responded with, "oh lol so that means if I hashtag something I save lives? No -I could give two f**ks about 'sides'. You don't know what I do." So, that was perhaps the least political response ever. She quickly deleted the tweet, as most celebs do when they post something that will land them in hot water, but due to the snapshot gods, the tweet lives on in the interwebs.
2 Camilla Belle Gets Into The Mix
So, obviously not all celebs can straight up be #TeamKim. Hollywood is very political, after all. If they are saying something about the drama, for the most part, celebs will do so in a cryptic way. Case and point: Camilla Belle.
Following the Snaps, Belle posted a grainy quote on Twitter saying, “No need for revenge. Just sit back & wait. Those who hurt you will eventually screw up themselves & if you’re lucky, God will let you watch.” Admittedly, that could be about anything but the timing of such a quote seems to be Taylor-related.
Plus, in the past Taylor and Belle have had major beef. Taylor was dating Joe Jonas, who broke up with her over a phone call so he could start dating Belle. After that, Taylor penned the song “Better than Revenge”, which is believed to be about Belle and Jonas. So, double points to Belle for posting a quote that called back to Taylor’s song about her. One has to wonder just how long Belle has been waiting to post that quote. Years, maybe.
Katy Perry, who has supposedly been feuding with Swift for some time, had a very simple response. She tweeted, "haha." Yep, that's all Katy had to tweet. It was after the shit started hitting the fan so it was pretty obvious that she was referring to her old friend.
Katy and Taylor were very close for a long time, as the pop star took Taylor under her wing. Since neither of the ladies have directly commented on the rumored feud, the reason for their drift is unclear. Some signs point to their shared ex: John Mayer. Taylor dated him for a time, then wrote a song about him because duh. Later, Katy dated him too. There's also the theory that Taylor stole Katy's backup dancers.
Whatever the reason for the rift may be, it seems Katy finds this whole situation hilarious, She's since deleted the tweet, but we think Perry may still be giggling to herself about her former friend facing a big humiliation.
1 Internet Response
And here it is, what all celeb feuds are really about: us. The tiny people of the world. We may not be rich, beautiful, talented celebs but we can always read about them and even better, we can always read about when they fight. This is just the most recent feud and, in a few weeks, it will be old news and another celeb feud will pop up for all of us to consume.
At the end of the day, this feud is especially interesting because it is a style of fighting that can only take place in today's day and age. Marilyn Monroe couldn't post Snapchats - though, if she could, I'm sure they would be totally amazing. Social media and the instant access provides a whole new dynamic to celebrity feuds. We expect responses right away.
Kim may have exposed Taylor for being a liar and a ruthless businesswoman, like most people in the entertainment business are. The reason it is such a big deal is because her 'brand' is not exactly about that ruthlessness. Taylor Swift has long played the victim and the underdog and now she can't really play that card. Taylor's reputation may or may not recover but we'll always have the amazing tweets and memes that this celeb throw down provided, which is really what it's all about.
Kim K, you and your camcorder never cease to entertain us. Thank you.
