Guardians of the Galaxy came out of nowhere last year. It seemed like it was just some cute little science fiction movie, kind of a throwback to days gone by, then the whole thing blew up. For those of you that are not in the know, it was based on a Marvel comic. The film became one of those rare movies that was loved by fans and critics alike. It ended up grossing $773.3 million worldwide and was the biggest money-earning superhero film of 2014, as well as becoming the third highest-grossing film in North America of 2014.
It pretty much hit all of the right notes. It was praised for being funny, for its action, its soundtrack, its visual effects, and the director and actors got props as well.
So with all that said, is it any wonder that there is a sequel coming out? If there is one thing that Hollywood is known for, it is trying to make money, and the first Guardians of the Galaxy made so much of it, and was liked so much that a sequel was announced a long time ago.
But what about this sequel? When is it coming out? Who is going to be in it? Who is coming back and who is not? Don't worry, we have you covered.
Here are 15 Things You Didn't Know About Guardians of the Galaxy 2.
15 Kurt Russell Is Ego, The Living Planet
There is absolutely nothing wrong with putting Kurt Russell in any movie whatsoever. Let's face it, Kurt Russell is cool. He could be pretty much in any movie whatsoever and it would get way cooler simply because of his presence. Well, Guardians of the Galaxy is super cool already, but it just got a whole lot cooler, because Kurt Russell is on board. As most of you recall there is one big cliffhanger that is in Guardians of the Galaxy and that's the identity of Peter Quill’s father. What is it with space movies and fathers, anyway? It seemed that Quill was all human, but the real deal is that he is half alien. No matter how you look at it, adding Kurt Russell to the mix is going to add a lot of drama, there is no doubt about that at all.
14 James Gunn Is Calling The Shots
Well this one might seem obvious, but it really is not. There is a lot of money involved in these movies, and a lot of ego to go with it, and sometimes things happen that change up who directs these types of movie. But rest assured: James Gunn is back to direct the Guardians sequel. He was already a well respected director, although he had never directed a movie with a big budget, his highest budget before the first Guardians movie had a budget of just $15 million, which might sound like a lot, but in Hollywood $15 million is next to nothing. He got along great with Marvel which is one of the reasons he is coming back, the other of course is that he made Marvel a ton of money. He also wrote the script for Guardians 2.
13 It Comes Out Next May
This one may be the easiest thing for you to find out, but it also is the most important thing for you to know. The next Guardians of the Galaxy movie comes out in May of 2017. Sure that seems like a long time to wait now, but time flies and it will be out before you know it. It will come out on May 5 to be exact. This is the third marvel movie to drop next year; it is following both Captain America: Civil War and Doctor Strange. For those of you that are big marvel fans, don't worry, this is not the end of it. After the Guardians sequel, Marvel will also be releasing Spiderman: Homecoming and Thor: Ragnarok. So one thing is for sure, it looks like if you want to get your nerd on next year, you are going to have a lot of opportunities.
12 It Won't Be Rated R
While some of you out there might want to see a little bit more skin, or a bit more violence there is not much chance of that happening with the next Guardians of the Galaxy movie. While it is true that director James Gunn has directed a few R rated flicks in the past, there is not much chance of him doing so here. How do we know this? Well none of Marvel's superhero flicks have been any more than Pg-13 in the past, and to top it all off the CEO of Disney has said that they do not have any plans to make any R rated superhero movies. This all makes sense when you think about it. I mean so many of the people that go to these movies either are kids, or they have kids, so why shut them out of the market? Bank on this movie being PG-13.
11 The Plot - We Know As Much As We Did Before The First Film...Nothing
Well, we don't really know. Hey I know, this is supposed to be a piece about what you did not know about The Guardians of the Galaxy sequel, but if you recall no one really knew much about what was going to happen with the first movie, either. You basically knew that Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket and Groot were in prison and were all going to team up because of a mysterious orb. This one is not that different. You may have a bit of an idea what is going to happen, but that is it. One thing about this franchise is that there is a lot more plot freedom than in other Marvel films. One thing that we do know is that the movie is going to include the introduction of Peter Quill's father, and you can read on to find out more about that.
10 Peter Quill Is All Grown Up
So as we recall when at the beginning of Guardians of the Galaxy, Peter Quill was a bit of a scoundrel. He messed around with women, he stole, and he was pretty much a total jerk. By the end of the movie though he was a straight up hero, and his change is part of what made him so appealing. He is now the leader of the group, which was made pretty clear at the end of the movie. Look for that to continue in Guardians of the Galaxy 2. As we have already mentioned, his father will be introduced in the sequel, which looks to be one of the major plot devices in the movie. Look for Peter Quill to continue on his journey from scoundrel to hero. While it is a device that is used often in movies of this type, it is one that works.
9 Groot Is Back
Groot is back in the sequel, which sort of goes without saying of course, when you come up with a character like Groot it is not like he is not going to be used in the future. I mean come on, he is a tiny alien tree, that can only say a few words and is voiced by Vin Diesel. How could he not come back? Well he is tiny now anyway; it looked like he was a goner at the end of the last movie after he sacrificed himself to save others, but it is not easy to kill a Groot because of how they regenerate. At the end of Guardians of the Galaxy, Groot had been reduced to a sapling, and from the few previews that are available he still looks pretty small. Groot was a great character in the first movie, and it is nice to see that he will be back.
8 We Learn More About Drax
A lot of you out there know who Dave Batista is. He is a former WWE wrestler who won numerous titles. He is not just a fake tough guy either. He also used to compete in mixed martial arts. What a lot of you did not know, at least until the first movie came out, was what a good actor he is. He had only appeared in a few movies before his role as Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy. Well, he did a great job. He not only gave the movie a lot of comedic relief, he also was great as a tough guy, who was instrumental in taking down Ronan. James Gunn has promised that Drax will be back, and that viewers will learn more about him. This is a good thing, both for fans of the movies, and for Batista. Look for him to get more roles because of this.
7 Bradley Cooper Is Still A Raccoon
People loved, and I mean loved, Rocket Raccoon. It did not hurt that he was voiced by the ridiculously charming Bradley Cooper, but let's face it, most of us would have loved him no matter who did the voice. I mean how could we not? Seeing an angry and surly raccoon messing with everyone, including a lot of people, not to mention aliens, that could knock his block off was a lot of fun. He mellows out a little bit near the end of the movie and does not seem to hate everyone quite so much, but he still has a pretty bad attitude about everything. Rocket Raccoon was a great character in the first movie, he arguably was the most popular character of all so there is no surprise that he is going to be back for round 2.
6 Will Thanos Play A Big Role?
Who is going to be the main bad guy in Guardians 2? Will it be Thanos? He has been kicking around for quite a while now. In fact we first saw Thanos in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers when he became known as the brains behind the attack on New York. Then came Guardians of the Galaxy, where they brought up his name and referenced how powerful he was, and how fearsome he could be. So with all of that out there, where will the "Guardians of the Galaxy" be when Thanos comes in and kicks some butts and takes some names? He probably will be in the movie. Josh Brolin does his voice and Brolin has said that he will be voicing Thanos in 2017, but the word is out that the role in the movie will not be a big one.
5 Ronan Is Dead...For Real
Ronan, who is played by Lee Pace in Guardians of the Galaxy, was a great villain, which has led some to think that he might come back in the sequel. I mean sure he is dead, he was killed at the end of the first movie, but that has never stopped anyone before. I mean look at Game of Thrones? Jon Snow is stabbed around a million times and dies. Seemed like a good idea at the time, but then the producers had second thoughts and just brought him back to life through magic. This is one heck of a cheap plot device, but it has been used over and over again in the past, why not again? Will Ronan be brought back to life? Well, no he won't. The word is that Ronan is really gone for good, and we have to give James Gunn some props for that.
4 What About The Avengers?
Marvel Studios has done this kind of thing a few times before so it would not be the biggest surprise in the world. Are the Guardians of the Galaxy about to meet the Avengers? When it comes to marketing it sounds like a great idea; put these two franchises together and it seems like a home run. But sometimes things like this also blow up in peoples faces so do not expect it to happen for now. James Gunn has said a few times he does not see that happening, at least any time soon. So don't expect his guys to meet up with Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and the other Avengers. As much fun as it sounds, sometimes there really is too much of a good thing, and this could be one of those times.
3 Will Adam Warlock Make An Appearance?
This has been rumored for quite a while, but it does not seem to be happening. Why has this been rumored? Well if you were paying attention and also are a total nerd then you noticed that the lair of The Collector had something in it that looked pretty much exactly like Adam Warlock’s cocoon that was featured in Marvel comics. So does this mean that Adam Warlock will make an appearance? Nope. James Gunn did admit that the cocoon looks pretty much exactly like Warlocks, but he just did that because he thought it looked cool. Well hey, he is the director. He can do things like that you know. So as much as you might have thought you were looking at an Easter egg, you really were just seeing something that Gunn thought looked cool.
2 Meet Mantis
One of the new characters in the sequel is Mantis, who will be played by the actress Pom Klementieff. Pom is a 3o-year-old Canadian actress who is super hot, in a very unique way. She is best known for her role in the Spike Lee film Oldboy. We are not sure exactly how she is going to be used, but in the comics Mantis is from Vietnam. When she was very young she was left at an alien temple where she was trained by the Kree. They thought that she was a messiah and taught her to be a warrior. They trained her well, as she is an amazing fighter. She is very strong, but is equally quick. She also has a knack for finding an opponent's weak spots. There is no doubt that Mantis should be a great addition to Guardians of the Galaxy 2.
1 What About Rhomann Dey?
Okay so we have to admit that John C. O'Reilly is not quite as cool as Kurt Russell, but he is almost as cool, and in another way is almost cooler. When you look as good as Russell it is easy to be cool. O'Reilly is one of the busiest actors in show business, he has appeared in numerous movies, and pretty much every one he has ever been in is really good. He was a member of the Nova Corps in Guardians of the Galaxy and did his usually excellent job in a supporting role. Will he be back? We certainly hope so. While it would not be a huge thing to not have the character of Rhomann Dey back, it would be a slightly bigger thing not to have O'Reilly in the movie. He is just always so fun to watch.
