If you haven’t heard, Adele is ruling the world right now.
The British singer released her third studio album, 25, on November 20 with her lead single, “Hello,” released on October 23. The 27-year-old and her latest project have been breaking the Internet but is it really a surprise? Ever since there was word on the street that the songstress was coming back into the music business, the world was anticipating every second for her new work. Her lead single and the music video for it hadn’t been a week out and they were already breaking records. Adele topped Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj and Miley Cyrus (remember them?) for the most single-day views on Vevo. Her comeback album also became the first album to sell more than three million copies in a week, according to Nielsen Music Data.
The “Hello” singer gets candid in promoting her latest project and explains that it is a telling of the past and present. However, based on some of her recent interviews and comments, Adele seems to be doing better than ever. “Because of him and our kids and stuff, I’m doing alright,” she told 60 Minutes in an interview about her family with long-term boyfriend, Simon Konecki. “Being in such an amazing relationship with someone that’s so there for me and so loyal and is really part of my core now, that’s what made me write about everything I’ve done, because I’ve got his love.”
With all the hype going on right now surrounding the British star, what don’t you know about the singer now? She is wanted in every publication and in every venue. However, there are still some items you probably don’t know about the 27-year-old so we gathered 15 surprising facts you didn’t know about the star! Enjoy.
15 She Went To The Same School As Other British Stars
In 2006, Adele graduated from the BRIT School for Performing Arts & Technology in Croydon, London, England. While attending, she was classmates with famous British pop stars Jessie J, Leona Lewis, and Amy Winehouse. In an interview with i-D in 2005, she reveals some of her thoughts on being associated with the controversial singer and artist. “Contrary to reports, me and Amy didn’t really know each other,” she told the publication. “We weren’t friends or anything like that. I went to Brit School and she went for a little while, but I adored her.” What is even more interesting - and funnier - is the 27-year-old songstress credits Winehouse for inspiring her to play the guitar and even more. “If it wasn’t for Amy and Frank, 100 percent I wouldn’t have picked up a guitar, I wouldn’t have written “Daydreamer” or “Hometown” and I wrote “Someone Like You” on the guitar, too.”
14 She Credits Sarah Palin For Her US Success
In an interview with UK magazine, Attitude, Adele explains that former vice-presidential hopeful, Sarah Palin, “made her career.” “Sarah Palin made my career by coming on that show,” she told the UK publication. “She asked to come and meet me, and my guys were in the room, saying, ‘If she comes in, I’m leaving.’ She cornered me and said hello. And I had a massive Obama badge on my t*t.” In 2008, the “Someone Like You” singer appeared on Saturday Night Live where Tina Fey was applauded for her hilarious performance on the show, portraying Palin. Just within 24 hours, Adele’s album made it to the top in iTune’s chart as her single “Chasing Pavements” went from No. 45 to No. 11.
13 She Has An Onstage Alter-Ego
Stars like Beyonce have famous onstage alter-egos to motivate them during a performance. And it looks like Adele has also tried giving herself a nickname to bring her performances more to life. Beyonce’s is Sasha Fierce while Adele’s is Sasha Carter, a combination of Sasha Fierce and country singer, June Carter. As if that doesn’t tell you Adele looks up to Queen, she told Rolling Stone that she came up with the name of her onstage alter-ego after meeting Beyonce for the first time and having “a full-blown anxiety attack.” As for those rumors about Adele turning down a collaboration with Queen? Yeah, the “Someone Like You” completely denies those rumors and is a die-hard fan like the rest of us. “Obviously, like, Queen B, till the day I die,” she said.
12 She's An Only Child
The songstress happens to be an only child, joining stars like Charlize Theron, Betty White, Robin Williams, Brooke Shields and Lenny Kravitz. She was born on May 8 in Tottenham, London to British mother, Penny Adkins and a Welsh father, Mark Evans. She was raised by her mother when she was only 20 years old after her father left them when Adele was only two. Rather than spending time with her siblings, Adele took the time as a youngster singing, becoming obsessed with voices. She started singing when she turned four years old. Adele was more into the art of singing than the usual reading kids are taught at that age.
11 She Quit Smoking
During her interview with Rolling Stone, she also got candid about her past with smoking. “I absolutely loved it, but it’s not that f*cking cool when I’m dying from a smoking-related illness and my kid is, like, devastated.” She also explained to the publication that with her son, Angelo, now in the picture, she has cut down the drinking habits along with the smoking. “I used to be able to drink anyone under the table and still be able to put on an all-right show," she said. "But with kids, hangovers are torture. They just know. They pick up on it and just go for you."
10 She Wanted To Be A Doctor
Imagine Adele becoming a doctor? Not that she wouldn’t make a great one, but more importantly, we wouldn’t have the Adele we have now. Besides our own greedy desires, the songstress was inspired to go into the medical field when her grandfather had passed away when she was just 10 years old. Both of her granddad and grandma meant so much to little Adele. “I loved him so much, more than the world," she told i-D. "My grampy and my nana had always been my ideal relationship - ideal friendship, companionship, everything.” She then enrolled in biology while going to school that following year. However, just like a lot of us, she got distracted hence, “fun and boys” and just had a change of heart in terms of what she wanted to do as a career. “I gave up on it. My heart wasn't in it anymore,” she explained.
9 She Has Five Tattoos
Adele flashed her tattoo with Bang Bang Tattoos on a Facebook post back in 2013. “The lovely Adele came in to get tattooed today,” the post was captioned. The fresh ink was showed off on the side of her left fist, simply worded with “Paradise.” The songstress has also been identified with four other tattoos; one on each hand, one more on her left wrist and one behind her right ear. The visual tats on her hands read “Paradise” and “Angelo.” She explained to the New York Times in early November about the meaning behind her ink. “He’s my paradise,” she said of her son, Angelo. “He’s the love of my life and the light of my life, but he’s no one else’s apart from me and his dad. So no one else can really relate to that.”
8 She's Obsessed With Ri-Ri Like We Are
As the trend of “squads” was growing in popularity, especially with Taylor Swift basically taking every friend out there into her own squad group, Adele had her eye on one person in particular if she were to ever join the hype. “I wish my squad was all supermodels,” she told Rolling Stone. “We are, in our brains. I guess I have my own squad. It’s not as interesting as some of the other squads that are around right now. But maybe Rihanna can be in my squad! That would be really cool. Oh, God. She’s life itself, isn’t she? I love her." She sounds almost as obsessed as we are with the “Pour It Up” singer. Who could blame the British singer? Now, imagine both of them in the same squad? Hashtag squadgoals.
7 She's Been On Three Celebrity Dates
Back in 2011, she explained to Glamour when she was on the cover of the magazine, that she had been on three dates with celebrities. With the same celebrity? With three celebrities? We wouldn’t know as the “Rolling In The Deep” singer kept that under wraps. “I've been on a few dates with celebrities but I don't like it,” she told the publication. “You go out and everyone looks at you both. I'm not going to say who. We go to really established places that know how to keep their f**king mouths shut. But then, everyone wants to f**k a celebrity so I wouldn't trust them."
6 She Was Obsessed With Her Ex-Boyfriend
Adele’s past has been in the press since she’s been pretty open about how it was tough time in her life. She had revealed to Nylon magazine that that time of her life was an “early life crisis” for her. It was in 2008 when she was getting ready to start her tour, An Evening With Adele, for her album, 19. However, due to really personal matters, the singer canceled US tour dates to be with her ex-boyfriend. She then told Nylon about how she regretted that decision. “I was drinking far too much and that was kind of the basis of my relationship with this boy. I couldn’t bear to be without him, so I was like, ‘Well, okay, I’ll just cancel my stuff then.” She continued, “We refer to that period as my ELC, my Early Life Crisis. Now I'm sober, I'm like, 'I can't believe I did that.' It seems so ungrateful.”
5 She Considers Herself As A Feminist
In 2015, Adele straight up told Rolling Stone about her views on feminism, sexuality and other social issues. “If there’s a movement, that’s great,” she said. “Who’s doing it? Will you ask me if I'm a feminist? I don't think many men in interviews get asked if they're feminist.” She continued, “I’m a feminist. I believe that everyone should be treated the same, including race and sexuality.” She then went on to include singer, Sia, in the “girl power” conversation. “I actually love the dynamic of us both being in there and just f**king being bossy," she said of working with the singer on her album. "And it's all these male producers, and they're all f**king shitting themselves because we're in there." Nice.
4 She's Good At Keeping Secrets
Adele apparently kept her son’s name as a secret for 94 days. It wasn’t even as if the “Hello” singer finally revealed his name to the press. The media just got a snapshot of her wearing a gold nameplate necklace with the name “Angelo” while she was out and about in West Hollywood and took a wild guess. She gave birth to her son on Oct. 19, 2012. Adele has been known for being reserved and overprotective of her personal life but took it to another level after she gave birth. The Brit and her beau held a privacy case against a UK-based photo agency for publishing paparazzi images of them and their son during an outing in 2013.
3 Honored By The Royal Family, Laughed About It
In 2013, the “Chasing Pavements” singer was given the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) for her services to the music industry. Her award was presented to her by Prince Charles during a ceremony at Buckingham Palace in December of that year. In true Adele fashion, the Grammy award winner took the award from the future King of England as she burst into laughter. The music star was obviously delighted, and possibly a little nervous, with the award as she was also honored with a medal pinned to her chest. Even though she is a huge star, she is also human and the camera definitely captured that side of her during the service.
2 People Actually Bought A Physical Copy Of 25
With crazy numbers Adele’s third studio album, 25, has generated, people wonder how many of those albums were actually sold in stores like the good old days and not just downloaded. The album reportedly sold 1.71 million copies as compact discs. If you combine the number of physical CDs and downloads, 25 sold 335 copies per second in one week. It became the best-selling album in the US of 2015 in just one week. Adele’s 25 also accumulated 41% of all album sales in that one week. We wonder how she feels for outselling her idols, Rihanna and Beyonce, in first-week sales for new albums.
1 She Was Discovered On MySpace
After graduating from the Brit School for Performing Arts & Technology, she recorded a three track demo for a class project. The 27-year-old singer then shared it with a friend, who posted it on Myspace, where her musical talents were finally discovered by XL Recordings. The boss of the label, Richard Russell, then jumped to the phone and gave the aspiring singer a ring. Adele was obviously shocked that she wasn’t sure to believe it was a real label contacting her since she was only familiar with Virgin Records and so, she took a friend with her to a meeting just in case of any misunderstanding.
