Ah, yes, Daenerys Targaryen. She is one of the crowd favorites in the hit HBO series Game of Thrones. She has been a mainstay in the series, although she was absent in the fourth installment, but she is back and ready for action. We have watched her develop and grow as a character and a woman, and she has been through some pretty tough stuff. Besides having an awesome backstory and various plotlines, Dany is a very attractive character. Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin describes her as having shining white hair and purple eyes. She is gorgeous and possesses the tell-tale physical traits of a true Targaryen. Her family has been in charge of the Iron Throne for three hundred years, but then Robert’s Rebellion took place and they were overthrown.

So sit back and read this list and then go on a binge-watching session of Game of Thrones to get ready for Season 7.
15 She’s Related To Jon Snow
At least, all the signs are pointing to this conclusion. Viewers have been thrown through many loops, twists, and turns throughout this series. Come on, we saw Ned Stark die right off the bat! And now we have been given the hints that Dany Targaryen is not the last of her line. It turns out that there was one or more surviving members after Robert’s Rebellion overthrew the Targaryens. Some are saying that Tyrion Lannister is a Targaryen. Others are saying that Jon Snow and Dany are going to get married. This fan theory emerged after it was revealed that Jon Snow was not the illegitimate child of Ned Stark. He is still a bastard, but his father was actually Rhaegar Targaryen. Oh snap! This means that Jon is technically Dany's nephew. Does that mean that they will team up to battle for the Iron Throne? Does this mean an imminent victory? What does this mean?!
14 What’s Hiding Under Her Dress…
Ooh la, la! Before you get all hot under the collar, we are not referring to anything sexual. Dany Targaryen is a very sexy character, but this is a little-known tidbit that you might not be aware of. Daenerys always wears pants and boots under her dresses. What? Why? Well, Dany has evolved into quite a complex character. She is a Queen, a Mother of Dragons, and she is vying for the Iron Throne. Those are some pretty risky endeavors, so she is always prepared. The pants and boots under her dresses are there in case she ever has to make a quick escape. Sure, there was that time when she escaped from Meereen on one of her dragons, and that was one lucky break. What if there comes a time when she doesn’t have a dragon there to save her? She runs for it! Bet you weren’t expecting that secret.
13 She’s A Young’un
This is a difficult concept for a lot of people to accept, but...In the first book of the Game of Thrones series, Daenerys is only 13 years old! Let that sink in. Yes, she gets married off to Khal Drogo. Yes, they have sex (or rather, he rapes her). Yes, she also has to grow up really quickly and then become a Mother of Dragons and watch her brother die. And yes, it is very creepy indeed. For the television series, the producers and writers decided to try and eliminate some of that awkwardness by making Dany 15 years old at the start. Honestly, that is still really weird. Right now we’re gearing up for the seventh season of Game of Thrones on HBO, so Dany is a couple of years older, but still. Emilia Clarke is 29 years old, but she is playing a character about ten years younger.
12 She Is A Slave
Now this one might sound a bit odd to all of you. Yes, Dany is a Princess of the Targaryen family line, and now she is a queen. Yet she is a queen because she married Khal Drogo, which made her a Khaleesi in the Dothraki tradition. But as a Khaleesi, she is a wife, a wife of a Dothraki, and that means that she is his slave. She can even be considered lower than Khal Drogo’s horses. If Khal Drogo wanted to, he could give Dany to his men for them to have their way with her. Clearly, being a wife in the land of the Dothraki is not that great, and Dany had to eat a horse heart to get there! What a rip-off. All that time that she was married to Khal Drogo (and he was alive) she was his slave. Now that he’s a goner, we guess that Dany is no longer his slave, but she is supposed to go to a faraway city and become a seer.
11 She Loses Her Hair In The Books
Remember when Khal Drogo died and had a huge funeral pyre in remembrance? And then Dany walked through the fire? Well, in the book, when Dany walks through the fire with her dragon eggs, her hair burns off. She emerges from the fire without clothes and without hair. She actually has to spend a long portion of her journey on horseback with her khalasar trying to grow her hair back. It eventually does grow back, but in the TV adaptation of Game of Thrones, Emilia Clarke gets to keep all of her hair! It makes sense that the producers would want to preserve Dany’s sex appeal by not making her go bald. Plus, it would put an even greater amount of pressure on the costume department! Still, they make Cersei Lannister lose all of her hair, but that was probably because that hair loss was much more necessary to the show.
10 She Is Purple-Eyed
When trying to stay true to Dany’s appearance in the books, Emilia Clarke wore contact lenses. She found the purple lenses to be very uncomfortable, so the producers had to make do with her blue eyes instead. As for Dany, her appearance and history goes far beyond her eyes. Her name came from Korean and Welsh, with “Dae” meaning “greatness” and “Nerys” meaning “chief.” She is the daughter of “The Mad King,” King Aerys II Targaryen, who was killed (along with Dany’s brother Rhaegar) during Robert’s Rebellion. This is when three hundred years of Targaryen rule was overthrown. Therefore, Dany sees the Iron Throne as her birthright. Previously, her brother Viserys was vying for the Iron Throne, but he was killed when he angered the Dothraki (whom he forced Dany upon). Only time will tell who gets the goods, but there are bound to be twists and turns along the way.
9 Emilia Clarke Makes Bank For Playing Dany
The Game of Thrones actors are really raking it in. And why shouldn’t they? The roles are demanding, the story is intense, and the filming probably takes a long time to complete. As for Emilia Clarke (Dany) she makes somewhere around $300,000 per episode, and along with some other heavy players in the TV series, she is one of the highest-paid actresses in Hollywood. This role in Game of Thrones greatly propelled Clarke’s career (she was pretty much a Hollywood nobody before the show premiered). Clarke has been praised for the way she portrays Dany on the silver screen, and she has become one of the most popular Game of Thrones characters. Clarke has won awards for her role in the show, including anEWwy, an SFX, a 20th Empire Award, and more. She has been nominated for a Screen Actor’s Guild Award, a Critic’s Choice Television Award, a Primetime Emmy Award, a Satellite Award, a People’s Choice Award, and several others.
8 She Has Family Traits
In terms of her personality, Dany Targaryen possesses some familial traits, such as her brother Rheagar’s sense of kindness and her father’s capability of destruction and connivery. This family resemblance also pertains to appearance. In the books, Dany is supposed to have white hair and purple eyes. In the television series, Emilia Clarke portrays Dany with a blonde wig and her natural blue eyes. Viewers around the world have come to love this character with the bright white hair and small stature (Emilia Clarke is only 5-foot, 2-inches). In an interview, Emilia said that once she puts on that blonde wig, she begins to feel totally in character and she really summons her inner Dany. For the first season of Game of Thrones, she kept her notes and copy of the novel by her side all the time. We just hope that Dany doesn’t end up like her brother, Viserys.
7 Her Name Is A Lie
Well, sort of. Dany often introduces herself as Daenerys Targaryen, “First of Her Name, the Stormborn, Mother of Dragons.” In actuality, Dany is the second of her name because the first Daenerys Targaryen was her great great grand aunt, daughter of King Aegon IV. The first Daenerys Targaryen went on to marry the Prince of Dorne, meaning that she only became a Princess, not a Queen. The second Dany got to be a queen! We can’t really blame you if you missed this tidbit. After all, the family trees and bloodlines in Game of Thrones are absolutely insane. Plus, with characters being introduced and killed left and right, it sometimes feels impossible to keep everyone straight. And now we have to deal with the teaser that there may be another Targaryen that we didn’t know about! It looks like Dany isn’t the last Targaryen after all...so who could it be?
6 She’s Grown, But Stayed True To The Series
When we first meet Daenerys Targaryen, she is the little sister to Viserys, who has a tendency to boss her around. By now, she is a Queen, a leader, and a full-grown woman. While Dany has transformed tremendously (and Emilia Clarke’s acting skills have improved) Daenerys is also one of the characters in the Game of Thrones TV series to stay very true to the book. From her wig to the outlandish costumes, the role of Dany has stuck to the script more than other characters. We have witnessed Dany move to various cities, get herself into trouble, and manage to fight for victory in a multitude of ways. Peter Dinklage's character of Tyrion on the other hand, has a different appearance than the one described by Martin.
5 She’s A Crowd Favorite
Both everyday fans of the show and TV critics have praised Dany for being one of the best characters on Game of Thrones. Even the author of the book series, George R.R. Martin, has expressed his appreciation for Dany. She is a dynamic character, even though at first glance she seems quite static. Just looking back at how she has grown we can see that Dany has made her way from a scared kid sister to a Mother of Dragons! She was whisked into womanhood when her brother forced her to marry Khal Drogo. She became the owner of three huge dragons and she rules her own Khalasar that obeys her every command. She is in the running to win the Iron Throne, and that is quite a feat, considering that so many characters die in this series. We are bound to see even more awesome feats and side stories relating to Dany in the seventh season.
4 She’s The Subject Of Many Fan Theories
Sure, fan theories and conspiracies happen in just about every television series, and Game of Thrones is no exception. There are ideas for all of the plotlines and characters in the show, especially for Dany. After all, she is one of the most popular characters and the closest thing this series has to a female main character. One of the fan-made theories is that she and Jon Snow will be a romantic couple. Another says that Dany and Tyrion Lannister will marry to unite the Iron Throne and that will be the end of the series. Yet another fan theory is that she will die and forfeit her chance at the Iron Throne. There is also the possibility that the Dothraki or some enemies will end up killing Dany and she will have a tragic end. Finally, an interesting Game of Thrones conspiracy says that she will go insane or become a villain.
3 She’s A Criminal
We know what you’re thinking...how could that be? Well, think about it and you will realize that Daenerys is breaking a Dothraki law. When Dany became Khal Drogo’s wife, she also became sworn to Dothraki law - each and every one of them. One of the Dothraki laws says that if a Khal dies and his Khaleesi survives, she must move to Vaes Dothrak in the Dothraki Sea. There, she will become a seer to the other khals for the rest of their days. Of course, Dany wasn’t going to do that, so she instead ventured out on her own and formed her own Khalasar. Hmm, we wonder if she’ll be reprimanded for that? It looks like we will have to continue watching to find out! When we last left Dany, she was sailing in the hopes of a successful coup. The seventh season is sure to hold more action and surprises for us.
2 She’s A True “Stormborn”
Dany was given the nickname “Stormborn,” and some people may forget where that name originated. It turns out that there are a few reasons behind that interesting nickname. First of all, Dany’s mother died during childbirth, and Dany was also born during a very terrible storm (it was so bad that a Targaryen ship was sunk). After Dany was born, she had her older brother Viserys traveled throughout the Wandering Cities. As most people know, Dany and Viserys had a tumultuous relationship with Viserys being a bossy brother and a bully. That also made things “stormy.” There is also a legend in the Targaryen family that a “Prince of the Promised” would be born out of a stormy situation. It looks like it could be a “PRINCESS of the Promised” instead, and Dany could be it. Although we should point out that Dany is no longer a Princess, but a Queen.
1 She Was Originally Played By Another Actress
The role of Daenerys Targaryen was not meant for Emilia Clarke (although now everyone is really glad that she’s Dany). In the pilot for Game of Thrones, Dany was played by Tamzin Merchant, an English actress who appeared on The Tudors and in Pride and Prejudice. As for Emilia Clarke, she was just a little-known actress from London, England. Her acting resume included some plays in theater and a couple of commercials, but her big break came in 2010 when she snagged the role of Dany. We don’t know why Tamzin Merchant was dropped from the role, but she must not have impressed the producers during the pilot episode. Perhaps they were looking for someone with a sense of humor since the show is so dark. Emilia Clarke allegedly did the robot and funky chicken dances during her Game of Thrones audition! Maybe that was the clincher the producers needed!
