Whether it is a costly treatment no one would ever expect, or the cheapest solution that never sounds like a good idea, stars like to become guinea pigs of the beauty industry. It is often difficult to find what will work best, as it can be different for everyone. Some celebrities have the money to try everything and certainly do. Others are simply so lazy, they try anything they have at hand because the internet said so. It seems like everything has been tried, in hopes of finding the secret recipe to beauty.
Being weird is probably what makes them a little more normal, as anyone can find the strangest ideas to try to have the most beautiful look. However, simply because they do try these things, it doesn’t mean they should. Everyone makes mistakes and celebrities do so when in comes to beauty. It is believed that you have to suffer to be beautiful, as beauty can be found in many other ways. Here are some of the weirdest beauty secrets celebrities want you to try, too:
15 Using Tape in Many Ways - Lady Gaga
It is not surprising to see a star wearing such unique makeup, and also have unique techniques to put it on and take it off. Lady Gaga is a fan of facelift tape, as reported by the Mirror, to shape her face. As she said, she has a morning ritual:
“I wash my face, I pin my hair back and put on a wig cap and I ask, ‘How am I going to form my eyes today with this tape? How will I pull back my neck with tape?’”
Even if she is modifying her face, she believes she can be artificial and honest by talking about her secrets. The editor Clemmie Moodie tried that technique and was surprised by this secret, as it can make you look more youthful and different, erasing wrinkles without surgery. However, this could be dangerous for her, as tape can create internal scars, speed up the aging process and act as a toxin on your skin, as plastic surgeon Jeya Prakash explains. To remove her makeup, Gaga simply sticks Sellotape on her face and rips it off, according to the Daily Mail, as it is really efficient to remove glitter. However, after her make-up artist showed her that trick for glitter, she decided to use it for any kind of makeup. As part of her daily routine, she also confessed to Vogue that she bleaches her eyebrows every day so she can draw them anyway she wants and uses a collagen jelly mask on her lips for plumping.
14 Having Her Feet Eaten By Fish - Jessica Simpson
People can now feed fish with their feet. Jessica Simpson simply has to put her feet in the fish tank and the tiny fish will eat the dead skin for an hour, to make it soft as the skin of a baby. She was filmed trying the fish pedicure for the first time on The Price of Beauty in 2010. Funny thing is it truly works. No need to use chemicals or friction; this treatment is totally natural and used for the benefit of both the person and fishes called the Garra Rufa, as explained by Doctor Fish. However, it has been banned from most states in the United States because of health concerns and because some owners didn’t treat the fish well. The experience doesn’t hurt, but simply tickles and feels weird at first, like a tiny massage… As long as you are not Kim Kardashian as she started screaming when she tried it ("Oh my God! I don't like it! I don't like it! Can I take them out please?)
13 Washing Her Hair With Coca Cola - Suki Waterhouse
The model and actress washes her hair with Coca Cola to make her hair turn into perfectly tousled locks, giving her more volume and texture, as she said in an interview with US Weekly:
"I don't like my hair when it's washed — it's fine and limp — but Coca-Cola makes it tousled, like I've gone through the Amazon or something."
As Hair Finder explains, the soft drink as a low pH level, which can make the hair contract and appear smoother and shinier, also having their natural curl enhanced. Some members of the staff from Seventeen tried this cheap beauty treatment and did notice the benefits of it, as softer and shinier hair, with a little more volume. It doesn’t feel good or efficient in the shower, but once it dries, the experience is believed to be worth it. However, trichologists don’t agree with this method as Philip Kingsley says it leaves particles of dirt in the hair and Anabel Kingsley also agrees that, in the long term, it is bad for the scalp.
12 Eating Her Own Placenta - January Jones
The actress wanted to beat the baby blues by something she had at hand after childbirth: her own placenta, as reported by the Daily Mail. She ate her placenta in the form of vitamin capsules after it has been dehydrated after the birth of her son Xander. Having a positive effect on depression and fatigue, it would sure help improve her appearance as she looked like a much healthier person. As she said to Glamour:
"I was never depressed or sad or down after the baby was born, so I’d highly suggest it to any pregnant woman."
Placentophagy is believed to reduce pain, give born energy, reduce depressive symptoms and enhance the bonding between the mother and the newborn. However, according to BBC News, there is no scientific evidence proving that eating placenta is good for a mother’s mood. Moreover, viruses and bacteria can remain in the placenta and cause harm to the mother and the child.
11 Using Preparation-H for Wrinkles - Sandra Bullock
It seems like hemorrhoid cream can not only be put between your butt cheeks, but also on the cheeks of your face, as advised by some makeup artists. Glamour reported the actress and producer said:
"I didn't realize that putting hemorrhoid ointment on your face is acceptable in the beauty business, but apparently, butt cream helps lines around the eyes!"
However, she also claims to Eve magazine:
"I am a horrible celebrity. If I'm in public, I dress like a pig. All clothes these days seem to be designed for girls like Kate Moss. I am a normal, healthy American woman. I can't get those clothes past mid-thigh."
It is a good thing she didn’t decide to reduce every part of her body with hemorrhoid cream. As explained by The Dermatologist Review, it lessens the appearance of eye bags and other wrinkles around the eyes, shrinking blood vessels as it is meant to do with hemorrhoids. Sandra simply has to clean her face, apply it under her eyes and wait for it to take effect. However, even if it can be a cheaper alternative for treatment, using this product on your face is not recommended, and mostly near your eyes.
10 Exfoliating with Cat Litter - Snooki
"Yeah, well, I definitely, um, like to Google a lot. And I don't like to spend a lot of money on, like, spa treatments, just because I'm, like, a cheapo. So I Googled what else I could use that's, like, not so expensive, and it was cat litter.”
In fact, there is a reason for this as many exfoliants contain tiny rocks, as she believes cat litter is a cheap substitute for that. However, as the aesthetician Lezandra Berchik explains, it can cause micro scratches that will lead to inflammation. Cat litter is meant to have a cat sit on, and not for a human to put on their face. Moreover, cat litter is meant to hide odors, but that doesn’t mean it smells good. If Snooki really wants to be cheap, she better simply uses baking soda mixed with water, which will have a similar effect, but without the scratches.
9 Getting Vajazzled - Jennifer Love Hewitt
Jennifer Love Hewitt’s beauty secret is difficult to see as it is hidden between her legs. After a breakup, she decided that she was going to take care of herself, with a shining vagina that can make anyone envious. Are there only benefits to this?
When the interviewer asked her if it irritates men, Jennifer says she had no complaints. However, as it has been reported by the Daily Mail in 2012, injuries linked to vajazzling jumped 50 per cent over the last five years, because of cuts or infections. Waxing and shaving can already cause infections due to ingrown hairs, and applying glue and jewels to it certainly doesn’t help, but encourages the growth of bacterias, as explained by Time. Moreover, as it has been reported by Shape Jennifer now complains that women come up to her to pull down her pants and show off their vajazzled lady parts. It seems like fame has a price.
8 Bathing in Wine - Teri Hatcher
The actress from Desperate Housewives loves wine and baths some much she uses both of them at the same time: she pours an entire bottle of red wine in her bathtub. She seems right to think so as Lynn Curry, from Natural Resources Spa Consulting, told She Knows about an ingredient:
"Polyphenois are 10,000 times stronger than vitamin E and 50 times more effective, can reduce 80 percent of the free radicals which are responsible for wrinkles and skin aging, and can improve circulation by strengthening blood vessels, there are also anti-bacterial and antiseptic benefits.”
Even if Joseph Vercauterem from Bordeaux University discovered the benefits of grapes for the skin, it is not clear whether you need to drink it or soak in it and whether you need to have a natural grape or some alcohol version of it. Some consider it as a way to get the benefits of wine without the health risks, but it would work best if you use wine by-products, such as grape seeds and not the whole bottle itself, as Curry advises.
7 Bathing in Water - Serena Williams
Serena Williams had to chance to be the first to try the $5000 Evian Experience, which you can only get by renting the $6000-a-night suite in Miami’s Hotel Victor. This is not simple water, this is 1000 litres of Evian Natural Spring water, and some colorful daisies to make the experience seem special. This also includes two hours of spa services and luxurious food, beverages, candles and an ideal temperature. Elle reported what she thought of her experience:
“I could feel the difference from the moment I stepped in.”
Water is really important for her as she is an athlete and has to drink a lot. However, does bathing in good quality water really makes a difference for a total of $11,000? The services can be worth paying for, but bottled water is not necessarily better than tap water. As WebMD explains the placebo effect, there is a relationship of mind and body, which makes the body think it feels things due to a person’s expectations. The stronger the feeling, the stronger the person will feel the effect as it might have happened with Serena and many other people with weird beauty secrets. Will she have the same reaction if someone only pretends she is bathing in the purest bottled water?
6 Being Sucked by Leeches - Demi Moore
Sometimes Demi Moore likes to go to Austria, and back in Ancient times, to meet leeches that will suck her blood as she admitted in an interview with David Letterman: “We are talking about highly trained leeches. These are not some low-level scavengers, we’re talking highly trained blood suckers.”
As the Daily Mail explains, ancient Egyptian doctors used to cure everything with leeches and they are now used to help reattach body parts. Miss Moore explains that an enzyme is released in the blood of the person bitten by a leech and it detoxifies the blood. However, as Ed Zimmey, MD, explained on Everyday Health, she is wrong about the beneficial effect it has on her body. The best it can do is reduce pain, even though the treatment itself is painful. It is, in fact, risky as there can be an excessive blood loss, allergic reactions, and infections, even if the leeches are professional and raised in farms. If you really want to lose blood, better donate it to humans. Considering they don’t like hair and “they much prefer a Brazilian,” she seems to also put some between her legs.
5 Poisoning Herself - Debra Messing
The actress would rather poison herself than have wrinkles as she uses an eye cream containing snake venom on her face, claiming it helps the muscles relax and the wrinkles smooth out, sort of like what botox does. The manufacturer claims it is clinically proven to reduce wrinkles by up to 52% in less than a month, as reported by the Daily Mail. When snakes attack, they paralyze their victims so they can better take care of them, and celebrities are trying to use that effect on their face. However, this product called Syn-ake can cause swelling, redness, itching and stinging and work differently than other products, as they target neuron transmissions, according to The Dermatology Review. Moreover, if put around the eyes, a lot of precautions should be taken. Fortunately, even if it has the same effects as a poisonous snake, the venom is synthetic so it is safer to use, but not natural.
4 Putting Bird Poo on her Face - Victoria Beckham
Some say a bird pooping on you brings good luck and Victoria Beckham took that advice seriously. This traditional beauty secret is called Geisha Facials (or Uguisu no fun) and is made of nightingales excrement from the Kyushu Island. It is dried under UV lights and mixed with rice and water to make it easier to apply on the face, without the awful smell. According to the Daily Meal, it leaves the skin shiny and exfoliated, for about $150. If this wasn’t enough, she uses a cream made of similar ingredients, because you never have enough poop. She claims it has cleared an acne problem she had since she was a teenager. The beauty product was created by facialist Shizuka Bernstein who claims bird poop and pearls contain guanine, which gives a healthy shine to the skin, breaks down dead skin and even out blemishes. As spa director Emma Hu explains, geishas, monks and actors have been using that technique to whiten their skin for 1,200 years, even though the first one using it must have surprised others.
3 Having Her Hair Burned - Alessandra Ambrosio
The Victoria’s Secret model is on fire, or at least her hair is. The Brazilian treatment is called Velaterapia and is meant to burn off split ends with an open flame. The piece of hair is twisted on itself and a candle is placed near it to burn the damaged her coming out of it. This way, the top model can keep her hair long by not having to cut them, as reported by the Huffington Post. Then, the hair looks like little dreadlocks and looks healthier after being rinsed and cleaned with a conditioner. However, make sure you ask for the help of a professional before having this treatment if you want to keep your hair on your head. A journalist from the Daily Mail tried it too and it cost between $150-200 and it smells, obviously, like burning hair. She reports the treatments mostly works for the mid-section of the hair, and not the tips.
2 Being Stung by Bees - Gwyneth Paltrow
People usually, and wisely, avoid bees, but Gwyneth Paltrow does exactly the opposite. As she said in an interview for the New York Times, she likes to be stung by bees, even though it is really painful, to get rid of inflammation and scaring. As it has been explained by the Huffington Post, it is part of natural medicine and acupuncture, using the venom to cure important diseases like some cancers, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, tendonitis, fibromyalgia and more. There better be a lot of advantage if anyone wants to suffer to be prettier. Actually, it is a therapy called apitherapy she claims existed for thousands of years. To do so, someone picks up bees with tweezers and places them on the skin, just where they want them to sting, which can be as much as 80 times in one day, according to Chris Woolston, M.S.
If some researchers did prove that it helped lessen pain and reduce the inflammation of arthritis, more studies need to be done in order to understand if it can really cure other diseases. This therapy can also be really dangerous as it can make people have a severe reaction to bee stings and even die.
1 Putting Mayonnaise Down There - Kourtney & Khloe Kardashian
As Kourtney and Khloe said on Conan, they like putting mayonnaise on their vulva, as their secret beauty tip. They use it to groom their pubic hair. If you want more explanations, you are not alone, as Kourtney said:
"People asked us, 'What does mayonnaise on your vagina do? And we said it makes it shine like the top of the Chrysler Building. And people were like, 'Why would you want a shiny vagina anyways?'"
Even Kim was outraged by this, as she said: "Don't you guys realize that most of our fans are under the age 18 and you are bad influences on them? Talking about putting mayonnaise on your thing is not appropriate advice," as if she was a good example for minors by becoming rich and famous because of her sex tape.
Khloe replied "Honestly, women need to know how to take care of their stuff" but that didn't seem to convince anyone about mayonnaise. Comprising eggs, vinegar and oil, this is not something any professional advised putting down there because it can cause infections, as Mary Jane Minkin, M.D., from Yale School of Medicine explains you should never put oil down there if you want to avoid bacterias breeding or having an STD because the condom broke.
