The only thing bigger and more important than the release of a new movie based on a beloved comic book is who is going to be cast as the superhero. Let's face it - when it comes to superhero films, casting is everything and the choice of actor that will play our iconic superheroes can make or break the film.
The actor must live up to a number of standards in order to fit the role of any superhero. They must embody the character, be believable as a person of power, and look good in the superhero's costume, whether it be spandex, a cape, or black leather. With more than eleven Marvel Comic films scheduled through 2019 and ten DC Comic movies scheduled through 2020, it's time we answer the question 13 Superheroes Casting Decisions: Who Was Hotter?
13 Batman - Michael Keaton, George Clooney, Ben Affleck, Christian Bale
Michael Keaton brought a softer inner turmoil to the Batman character in the 1989 film Batman, and the 1992 sequel Batman Returns. He even conveyed dark and brooding well, which created a multi-layered superhero. Although chicks appreciate a sensitive guy, according to many fans, he doesn't quite live up to the masculinity and ruggedness of the later Batmans.
George Clooney is known for his rugged good looks and unfortunately, for his silly portrayal as Batman in the 1997 film, Batman and Robin. It's true that Clooney didn't have much to work with in terms of direction or a script, but he appeared bored playing the iconic superhero. His worst offense is his failure to disguise his voice while dressed as Batman. Instead, he's just Bruce Wayne wearing bat ears and a cape. Clooney brought his smoldering good looks, but forgot to bring anything else to the role, and that's why he's not the hottest Batman.
There were a lot of upset fans when it was announced that Ben Affleck was cast as Batman in the upcoming film Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, set to release in 2016. The decision to cast Affleck as Batman was polarizing among fans, due to his previous dire portrayal of Daredevil. Since the film has not yet been released, Ben Affleck can't be chosen as the hottest Batman at this time.
Christina Bale is our modern day Batman starring in the 2005 film Batman Begins, and the more ominous Batman films The Dark Knight (2008) and The Dark Knight Rises (2012). Fans have gone as far as naming Bale the best Batman of all time. Bale made Batman scary, which no other actor had done before and in terms of his physique and fighting style, he played the character like a trained soldier. Thanks to his convincing portrayal of the iconic superhero and his smoldering good looks, Bale is clearly the hottest Batman.
12 Catwoman- Halle Berry, Anne Hathaway, Michelle Pfeiffer
Halle Berry played the ferocious feline in the 2004 film Catwoman. Berry's superhero getup consisted of ripped leather pants, a leather bra, a cowl and leather gloves. Her costume was clearly the most revealing and Berry wore it to perfection. However, the film was poorly received by audience members and critics, and earned itself a 9% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film's cheesiness ultimately detracted from Halle Berry's overall hotness.
Anne Hathaway was our most recent Catwoman, starring the in 2012 film The Dark Knight Rises. Hathaway is clearly a beautiful woman, but her girl-next-door temperament and beauty didn't quite capture the siren, vixen aspect of the role of Catwoman.
The Catwoman of the 1992 sequel Batman Returns was portrayed much differently than the comic books. Michelle Pfeiffer brought a bit of madness to the role, which previously only consisted of sultry seductiveness. The costume was the least revealing and was an eyesore, but Pfeiffer still made it look sexy. After playing Gotham's naughtiest pussycat, Pfeiffer became an instant sex symbol. Given the fact that she was the most memorable thing about the film, Pfeiffer is the hottest Catwoman.
11 Spiderman- Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield
Tobey Maguire starred in Spider-Man (2002), Spider-Man 2 (2004) and Spider-Man 3 (2007). His version of Peter Parker - a shy nerd, a loner and a weakling stayed true to the comic book. Although Maguire had a hot bod, his physique was a bit buff for the character of Spider-man, which was described as thin, fit and tall. Additionally, Spider-Man is known for his wisecracks and quips, but Maguire failed to naturally deliver the few jokes he did have.
10 The Invisible Woman- Kate Mara, Jessica Alba
Kate Mara seemed like an odd choice for the role of The Invisible Woman, but she was cast as the superhero in the 2015 reboot Fantastic Four. The film flopped, garnering a score of 8% on Rotten Tomatoes. Mara, along with her co-stars seemed generally disinterested and understandably so, given the poor script and lack of direction. Mara is clearly an incredible actress, but her role as the Invisible Woman did nothing to support that claim. Instead of dying her hair to fit the character, Mara was fitted with an awful wig - which was actually more memorable than her performance.
9 Emma Frost- Tahyna Tozzi, January Jones
Tahyna Tozzi played a younger and much more minor version of the comic book character, Emma Frost, in the 2009 film X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Although she's gorgeous and looks much more like the cartoon character, her role was so small that she can't be named the hottest Emma Frost, because no one really remembers her.
8 Elektra- Elodie Yung, Jennifer Garner
Elodie Yung will star as Elektra in the second season of the hit Netflix show Daredevil. Thanks to her striking and exotic look, Yung looks more like the comic book version of Elektra. We have yet to see Yung play Elektra, but she has great potential for quality physicality like she displayed in the G.I. Joe film. Since we have yet to see her don the red leather costume, we can't name Elodie Yung the hottest Elektra yet.
7 Hulk- Lou Ferrigno, Eric Bana, Mark Ruffalo, Edward Norton
Lou Ferrigno is best known for his role as the Hulk in the television series, The Incredible Hulk which aired from 1977-1982. A former body builder with two Mr. Universe titles under his belt, Ferrigno effortlessly brought the brawn and power to the role. Even though he beat out Arnold Schwarzenegger for the part, he wasn't the hottest Hulk.
Eric Bana starred in the 2003 film Hulk, as the muscular, green superhero, but failed to deliver a solid rendition. Even though he was the victim of a bad script, Bana gave a wooden performance, making him an impossible hero to cheer for. Additionally, Hulk looked more like a Disney character than an angry, hardcore superhero.
Mark Ruffalo played the role of Hulk in the 2012 film The Avengers, and the 2015 film Avengers: Age of Ultron. Ruffalo played the part of Bruce Banner, the genius scientist, terrifically by bringing the right kind of mellow confidence with a blend of fear to his human side. He had more memorable moments as Hulk, but came off as a bit too jovial at times.
6 Mystique- Jennifer Lawrence, Rebecca Romijn
Jennifer Lawrence played the younger Mystique in the films X-Men: First Class (2011), X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) and X-Men Apocalypse (2016). Lawrence is clearly the sex symbol in the films and continues to be at her peak in popularity and hotness. She didn't bring the curves that Rebecca Romijn brought to the role, but she did add some humanity to the character. Lawrence got the more complex opportunity as an actress to play Mystique as she's undergoing her transition from an innocent to a jaded assailant. Although Jennifer is a very accomplished actress with incredible range, she's not a body actor and has yet to learn how to act with her body. Additionally, she lacks the physicality of Romijn (being not as toned, strong or tall).
5 Daredevil- Ben Affleck, Charlie Cox
Unfortunately, Ben Affleck played the blind superhero in the 2003 film Daredevil. Now, it was unfortunate because the movie delivered a very dull origin that brought nothing new to the genre. Affleck's costume was less superhero-y and more like a red leather bondage getup. He lacked sexual charisma and was unable to hold the screen with or without his superhero mask. It was difficult to pay attention to Affleck's hotness because the movie was that awful.
Charlie Cox plays the role of Daredevil in the hit Netflix show. The adaptation of the superhero is much better, and Cox is much more realistic and likable as a blind man and a superhero. He's a lead that can believably kick butt and be overpowered. The Netflix show allows audiences to finally put visions of Ben Affleck in red bondage gear behind them as Charlie Cox delivers the passionate performance that Daredevil deserves. Cox is the clear winner of the hottest Daredevil.
4 Storm- Alexandra Shipp, Halle Berry
Alexandra Shipp will portray the younger version of Storm in the 2016 film, X-Men: Apocalypse. Shipp is best known for playing Aaliyah in the Lifetime biopic. The movie has not yet theaters, but Shipp is not Halle Berry - so she's not the hottest Storm.
Halle Berry brought tenacity and beauty to the character of Storm in the films X-Men (2000), X2 (2003), X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) and X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014). Dressed in black leather from head to toe, Berry brought sex appeal to the role even with her white hair and her eyes rolled back into her head. Halle Berry is clearly the hottest Storm.
3 Punisher- Ray Stevenson, Thomas Jane
Ray Stevenson played the role of Punisher in the 2008 film Punisher: War Zone. The film was much grittier and violent than its predecessor. Stevenson was dark and ruthless, but perhaps came off a bit too cruel as the superhero. He failed to capture the heart of the character and lost all concern for innocents. Because of his brutality, it was nearly impossible to find Stevenson attractive as Punisher.
2 Superman- Henry Cavill, Tom Welling, Christopher Reeve
Henry Cavill is the newest actor to don the big 'S' as he starred in the 2013 film Man of Steel. Cavill delivered the chiseled Superman physique and cheekbones for days. On top of that, he got a revamped modern suit that fit him like a glove. Although, Cavill brought the good looking appearance he failed to bring any charisma or emotion to the role - which made him lose the title of the hottest Superman.
Tom Welling played the younger version of Superman on the television show Smallville for 10 seasons. Christopher Reeves even expressed his approval of the show and made two guest appearances before he passed. The teen heartthrob gave audiences a glimpse of Superman's life before Metropolis, which made him even more likable. Welling is clearly a handsome man, but he's not the hottest Superman.
1 Jean Grey- Sophie Turner, Famke Janssen
Sophie Turner who plays Sansa Stark on Game of Thrones, will portray a younger version of Jean Grey in the 2016 film X-Men: Apocalypse. Turner is perfect looking for the role of the red-headed goddess. Speaking with Comic Book Resource, Turner commented on Janssen's portrayal of Jean Grey in the previous X-Men films, saying "Famke Janssen’s portrayed Jean so well and so beautifully." Sophie may be one of the hottest characters on Game of Thrones, but she's not the hottest Jean Grey.
Famke Janssen portrayed Jean Grey in five installments of the X-Men films including X-Men (2000), X2 (2003), X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), The Wolverine (2013) and X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014). Janssen was thirty-five years old when the first X-Men film was released and she has only gotten better with age. Janssen even won a Saturn award for best supporting actress as Jean Grey and Phoenix in X-Men: The Last Stand. Fans were extremely upset to lose Janssen as Jean Grey after she was killed off in X-Men: The Last Stand. The fact that she is so deeply missed as the superhero and fans can't stop talking about her makes Famke Janssen the hottest Jean Grey.
