There are a lot of things celebrities are known for. Most people associate stars with millions of dollars, designer clothing, trendy hairstyles and obnoxiously large mansions. And some celebrities are even known for what they actually do for a living, which is a rarity in today’s possession-obsessed society.
Famous people also have a reputation for being emotionally unstable and overly dramatic. There have also been times when celebrities have had full-fledged meltdowns. There are several reasons for this, including the fact that many celebs feel extreme pressure to be perfect. Some famous people also suffer from drug and alcohol addictions, which can lead to emotional breakdowns. Unfortunately, there are some celebrities who are known for their erratic actions, and their series of breakdowns have overshadowed their talent and creative abilities.
One of the best things for celebrities who experience mental breakdowns is to get the help they need right away. Of course, some famous individuals deny that they actually need help, and continue living dangerously until it’s too late. Others misinterpret the attention they’re getting, and think that they are becoming famous for their antics, when they are actually achieving “infamous” status. Here are 12 of the most embarrassing celeb meltdowns of all time.
12 Bret Michaels
The rocker, who was wildly popular in the 1980s, had a VH1 reality show that did pretty well in more recent years. Brett was also asked to be part of the cast of Celebrity Apprentice: All-Stars. During the show, which aired in 2013, Bret Michaels was one of the first celebrities to be “fired” by Donald Trump. We don’t doubt that the firing was kind of harsh, but Michaels didn’t take the news well at all. According to a source who spoke to Radar Online, Brett was “totally distraught” after hearing the news and “couldn’t stop crying.” The source also says that Celebrity Apprentice producers were trying to console him, but it didn’t really help. Looks like this rock star is more sensitive than we thought.
11 Gucci Mane
Gucci Mane is…interesting, to say the least. He’s been at the heart of controversy on social media several times before, but a few years back, he went on a Twitter tirade that put all of his other social media commentary to shame. He claimed that he had threesomes with celebrities like Taraji P. Henson, Nicki Minaj and Ciara. He also started dissing a log list of rappers, including Young Jeezy, Drake and 2 Chainz. Gucci Mane stated that the music industry was filled with backstabbers, and claimed that spending so much time in jail had humbled him. This particular tirade was 30 embarrassing Tweets long. Gucci Mane released a song called “Stealing” the day after his online breakdown, and then later apologized to his fans. He also deactivated his Twitter account and admitted that he was getting treatment for a cough syrup addiction.
10 Justin Bieber
Justin Bieber is often having breakdowns, which only makes him look like a child and does nothing for the “bad boy” image he’s tried to portray. He broke up with Selena Gomez in 2013, which likely sparked his breakdown, in which he yelled at a photographer in London. He then got into a physical fight with the photographer, but claimed that the man assaulted him. The cameraman did, however, call Bieber a moron, and the pop star has made it hard to argue with that comment. Justin then got on Twitter to apologize to his fans, but a few weeks later, he had another breakdown in which he spat on a neighbor.
9 Jason London
The Dazed and Confused star certainly lived up to the name of the movie when he publicly embarrassed himself during a drunken meltdown. Jason London was at a club when he punched one of the bouncers. When he was taken away, he shouted a homophobic slur to one of the police officers. He was then put in a police car, where he soiled himself. We’re practically embarrassed for him. Once he got arrested, London is quoted as saying that he “owned the police” and that he “loved this.” We’re guessing he was referring to the attention he was receiving, since he hadn’t been in the spotlight for a while. London also referred to himself as a “motherf—king famous actor”, and encouraged the cop to “look him up.” Wow.
8 Michael Richards
Michael Richards will always be known as Kramer from the hit sitcom Seinfeld. Richards is also a comedian, but his stand-up act in 2006 was no laughing matter. He apparently had a complete meltdown while at the comedy club, and was referring to his hecklers as “N-words.” This caused many of his fans to stop supporting him, and the rest of the Seinfeld cast was also under fire, since people started wondering if they agreed with Richards’ racist views. Later, Michael Richards apologized to his fans, and said that rage was the reason for his tirade. He tried to convince the world that he wasn’t racist, but it’s clear that most people still don’t believe him. Looks like the damage has been done.
7 Chris Brown
Chris Brown’s most infamous meltdown occurred in 2009 when he was charged with domestic violence against singer Rihanna. A few years later, Brown was still in need of some assistance when it came to his fiery temper. Even though the incident with Rihanna was extremely embarrassing and caused many to become ex fans, Brown still managed to get into a fight with singer Frank Ocean about a parking space at a recording studio in L.A. A few weeks later, Brown had a meltdown in another parking lot when he didn’t want to pay the $10 valet fee. Chris was also arrested for felony assault charges in Washington, D.C., when a man jumped into a picture Brown was taking with two women. Clearly, Chris Brown’s meltdown was pretty extended—and even more embarrassing. He has since served time in jail, went to rehab, and completed anger management classes. Brown now has a daughter named Royalty, and credits her for helping him turn his life around.
6 Alec Baldwin
Honestly, if Alec Baldwin can refer to his own child as a “pig”, he’s pretty much capable of having a meltdown with anyone. In the summer of 2012, Baldwin went off on a photographer who was waiting outside the New York Marriage License Bureau. He stated that the man was a “little girl” and assumed that the photographer was “r*ped by a priest of something. Later, Alec was taped screaming gay slurs at a cameraman in Manhattan. As a result of his meltdown, his MSNBC show was canceled.
5 Lamar Odom
After getting high and going into a coma from an overdose at a love ranch in Nevada, Lamar Odom is, thankfully, on the road to recovery. He and Khloe Kardashian were separated at the time and preparing for divorce, but they have since called off the divorce so that Khloe can make Lamar’s medical decisions for him. This isn’t the first time Odom has had meltdown. In the summer of 2013, he was confronted by Stefan Saad, a photographer, in Hollywood. Saad asked Lamar about his marital infidelities, and Odom went to the photographer’s car and started dumping his expensive equipment on the ground. He also smashed Saad’s car with a metal bar. A few weeks later, Lamar Odom was arrested and charged with a DUI. Hopefully, his meltdowns will now be a thing of the past.
4 Reese Witherspoon
Reese Witherspoon is often seen as the sweet and innocent girl next door. That’s why her alcohol-induced breakdown was a huge surprise to most of her fans. Her husband, Jim Toth, got arrested for suspicion of drunk driving in Atlanta a few years back. Witherspoon was in the car at the time, and decided to star yelling at the cop and harassing him. She even went so far as to ask the cop, “do you know who I am?”. Reese then got arrested for disorderly conduct and obstruction. It’s pretty clear from her mugshot that she had way too much to drink that night.
3 Britney Spears
We should have listened when Britney warned us in the early 2000s that she was “not a girl, not yet a woman.” Clearly, she didn’t know how to handle her fame and success, and ended up making some pretty strange and detrimental choices. She married a friend of hers in Vegas and had the marriage annulled shortly after. Then she married Kevin Federline, one of her backup dancers, and the former couple has two sons together. Kevin states that he had no idea Britney was planning to divorce him, and got the text about the breakup while he was doing an interview. And of course, we all remember when Britney shaved her head, took pictures of it, refused to turn her children over to their father’s custody, and started attacking a car with an umbrella. Federline confirmed that she’d been acting strange, and needed help with substance abuse. These days, Spears is sober, spending more time with her sons, and has a successful Vegas residency.
2 Amanda Bynes
Amanda Bynes was one of the most popular actresses on Nickelodeon. She later went on to star in several movies, and had her own sitcom with Jennie Garth called What I Like About You. Unfortunately, Bynes went the way of many child actors and started using drugs. The substances, which included marijuana, prompted Amanda to have several meltdowns on social media, including the beefs she started with Drake and Rihanna, along with a host of other celebs. She got several traffic violations and drug-related offenses, and then Bynes got into some serious trouble for dropping a bong from a high rise in Manhattan. The meltdown continued when Amanda Bynes started a fire in a random driveway in Thousand Oaks, California. She was then arrested and placed under psychiatric hold. Bynes was officially diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
1 Kanye West
Kanye West pretty much has an embarrassing meltdown every time he gets on social media or television. No one ever knows what he’s going to say. Even his wife, Kim Kardashian, who is the queen of tabloids, gets concerned about her husband’s antics from time to time. No one can forget the time Kanye had too much brown liquor and interrupted Taylor Swift’s VMA acceptance speech. West once got into it with talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, and took to Twitter to let Kimmel know that he was “out of line” for making jokes about him. West accused Kimmel of being manipulative, and said that Jimmy’s ex, comedienne Sarah Silverman, was funnier than Kimmel. Recently, Kanye has taken to social media to ask other celebrities for money, claiming that he was in debt. He also got into a heated debate with Wiz Khalifa and insulted him and their mutual ex, Amber Rose. He later apologized when he realized it was all a misunderstanding.
