The rich history of comic books means that any movie based on comic book characters have a lot of material to utilise and fall back on. As a result, a lot of iconic comic book scenes have already been depicted in such movies. Peter Parker being bitten by a spider, Tony Stark's kidnapping, Bucky Barnes waking up as the Winter Soldier and Bane breaking Batman's back are just a few examples of such classic comic scenes that have been immortalised on screen.
The future of comic book movies looks bright, with the likes of Marvel and DC now having plans in place for movies as far forward as 2019 (in Marvel's case) and 2020 (in DC's case) and that opens the doors for countless more classic comic book scenes to be depicted in live action.
Given that we know exactly what those films are going to be in both companies' cases, it's not difficult to take a stab at some of the best comic book moments fans will be seeing recreated in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or MCU, in future. The following are eleven awesome comic book scenes that die hard fans are expecting to see on the big screen.
*This article contains spoilers covering several Marvel story arcs*
11 Rocket Raccoon Threatens Thanos
Rocket Raccoon is a character movie audiences have already grown to love in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This little hero appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy and was extremely likeable, vulnerable and surprisingly useful - the "surprisingly" part only being relevant if you weren't familiar with him from the comic books.
Fans of the Guardians of the Galaxy know that he's actually a total badass, and including this particular moment in a movie would let cinema audiences know that unequivocally. This scene sees Thanos (albeit in a somewhat weakened state) holding Star-Lord in a death-grip and Rocket Raccoon - knowing that Thanos feared life more than he feared death - threatened to blast the Mad Titan into a gravity sink, causing him to live forever, with the words "Let. Him. Go." spoken in no uncertain terms.
10 Spider-Man's Origins
This has been to done to death now, with both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's version of Spider-Man having been given an origin story on screen since the turn of the new millennium. It has also been depicted in a number of Spider-Man comic books over the years. But fans would still love to see a Marvel Cinematic Universe interpretation of the iconic moment.
It might only come in a post-credits scene, but the moment Peter Parker is inadvertently granted superhuman powers by being bitten by a radioactive spider is something that simply has to be adapted on screen when it comes to introducing the new, younger, fresher version of the character whose exciting arrival in the MCU is imminent.
9 Adam Warlock Arrives On Earth
At the start of the Infinity Gauntlet storyline, when it comes to light that Thanos is about to make the proverbial mess hit the fan, a number of heroes and powerful beings around the universe gather in their own personal groups to discuss matters.
One such discussion - on Earth, between the likes of Doctor Strange, Doctor Doom and the Silver Surfer - is interrupted by the key figure of Adam Warlock, who plans to stop Thanos, having been resurrected after the Mad Titan himself had killed him years ago.
He appeared in Doctor Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum, and he signified the start of the fightback against the powerful villain. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Warlock's appearance would represent the exciting first true link between Earth and the cosmos - and the most exciting part would be that the Guardians of the Galaxy would surely be following him.
8 Surtur Brings About Ragnarok
While this might not be a specific comic book panel, so to speak, now that audiences know that Thor: Ragnarok is an upcoming movie, the idea of the mighty fire demon Surtur coming to the big screen is a very exciting one.
A native of the extradimensional plane of Muspelheim - a location that was hinted at via a fiery visual Easter egg during the Convergence event in Thor: The Dark World - Surtur is one of the many enemies of Asgard who Loki frees in order to bring about Ragnarok in the comic books.
Seeing the gigantic fiery monstrosity on screen in live action will be truly awesome - and seeing him attack Asgard to bring about its apocalypse will be even more so.
7 Spider-Man Officially Joins The Avengers
Spider-Man has yet to appear alongside the Avengers in the movies, given that he has been tied up with a different movie studio (Sony Pictures) for as long as he has been portrayed in Hollywood. He has, however, long been associated with the Avengers and related teams in the comic books, but he didn't become an official member until 2006, in New Avengers #15.
He was announced to the world as part of the team by Captain America and company - and it will be a fantastic moment when he finally joins them in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
J. Jonah Jameson was present for the announcement in the comic book, and audiences might even get to see the iconic handshake between him and Spider-Man which occurred when the announcement was made.
6 A Key Hero Unmasks
Captain America: Civil War will see the introduction of Spider-Man to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It isn't yet known how big his role will be, but he could potentially be a part of an adaptation of one of the most pivotal moments in comic book history.
In the Civil War comic book story arc, Peter Parker unmasked to the public for the first time in history - having been convinced to do so by Tony Stark - but it was to his detriment, as it exposed his family to Spider-Man's enemies and put them in danger.
While this moment could lack impact in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (Spider-Man would be a new character so it might not work), somebody should unmask. The only character who this could end up working for might be Ant-Man (depending on how the character is portrayed in his own upcoming movie), as everyone else is either going to be new or lacking in a secret identity.
5 Captain America Vs Iron Man
Captain America: Civil War is obviously going to pit Captain America against Iron Man - that goes without saying, as it's the entire premise of the movie. However, the specific scene that should be expected - and one that will be awesome to see - is the iconic clash of Cap's vibranium shield and Iron Man's repulsor blast in the exact same pose as the picture above.
It will likely occur towards the end of the movie - probably when the two former allies are the last two men standing - and it will definitely be worth the wait. It's an image that any true comic book fan is all too familiar with, and seeing it in live action will be incredible.
4 The Death Of Captain America
The fact that there is a Civil War movie on the horizon is ominous for the Marvel Cinematic Universe version of Captain America. The hero was killed in the aftermath of the comic book version of the event - Crossbones, who is going to be in the movie, shot him from afar - and it is more than likely going to happen the same way in the movie.
It's about time Marvel Studios had the balls to kill off an established character. Most fans agree that Quicksilver in Avengers: Age of Ultron was a real cop-out, and Cap's death would be a bold move. Of course, given that it's a comic book movie, he could always be resurrected later - in time for the Infinity War, perhaps?
3 Thanos Snaps His Fingers
When Thanos first gets his hands on the Infinity Gauntlet in the Infinity Gauntlet comic book arc, he uses its immense universal power to snap his fingers and erase half of the life in the entire universe (in an attempt to impress Mistress Death).
It's an iconic scene and, while it shouldn't necessarily be expected that the Infinity Gauntlet will grant the same levels of power in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Mad Titan should at least do something devastating with a snap of his fingers. Viewers can probably expect that to be the case in the first Infinity War movie - and it will be awesome.
2 Captain America Stands Up To Thanos
Despite the fact that he will probably have died already at the hands of Crossbones in Captain America: Civil War, the likelihood is that Captain America will be resurrected in order to lead the Avengers against Thanos, allowing Chris Evans to fulfil his contract with Marvel Studios.
With that in mind, expect an iconic scene from the Infinity Gauntlet comic book arc to be recreated, in which the super soldier is the last man standing against the Mad Titan. In spite of the villain possessing godly power, Cap will stand up against him with typical Captain America-esque bravery by walking up to him, staring straight into his eyes and delivering a moving speech.
1 Drax Kills Thanos
The heroic Marvel Cinematic Universe character who has the most personal beef with Thanos is Drax. Thanos was indirectly responsible for the murder of Drax's entire family, prompting the green alien to rampage angrily throughout the universe - in fact, he even said he was gunning for Thanos at the end of the Guardians of the Galaxy movie.
It would be a fitting demise for Thanos if Drax was to land the killing blow on the Mad Titan in the second Infinity War movie. However, the whole "heart ripped out" thing, which happened during the cosmic Annihilation comic book arc, might be too graphic for the younger MCU audience. Regardless, it really should be Drax who finishes Thanos off on screen.
