10 Weird Things Only James Franco Can Pull Off

via standard.uk.co

James Franco is one of Hollywood’s most intriguing stars. Some people may know him as Seth Rogen’s BFF and a hilarious actor who has taken on such classic roles in the films Pineapple Express and This is the End. He also has come through with a Golden Globe Award for the TV biographical film James Dean and was nominated for an Academy Award for best actor for the film 127 Hours. Whether it is playing a pot smoking drug dealer who gets involved in hilarious acts or digging his acting feet into dramatic roles, one thing is for certain, James Franco is definitely a highly versatile actor.

Beyond acting, Franco has been cited as being a very intelligent individual. In 2013, Franco was teaching a class in short film production at the University of Southern California (USC). He also was teaching a film class at his alma mater, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Franco, nicknamed “The Professor” by some of his friends, also has taught at New York University (NYU) for feature filmmaking and production and in 2015 returned to his old high school to teach a film class at Palo Alto High School. The highly talented Franco likes to give back and enjoys instructing others on the art of writing and filmmaking.

Aside from being “The Professor,” Franco has also had a propensity to be a tad silly. He and his group of friends have been known to make fun of his sexuality as well as push the envelope with their own brand of humor. One thing is for certain: James Franco is a very original creative soul.

These are 10 Weird Things James Franco Has Proudly Done.

10. The Sex Tape And Kissing

In January 2011, James Franco alerted the world he had a sex tape of himself. During a Newsweek panel interview, Franco confessed to the existence of a sex tape and expressed how he handles kissing scenes. Franco replied with, “anybody who has made a home sex tape knows what feels best doesn’t always look best. I remember when I was 19 doing that, and then watching it back and thinking, ‘oh, that looks horrible.’ So you have a lot of respect for those actors in the adult film industry, because they are really not just doing it, they’re really selling it! It’s the same thing with a kiss. It’s not just the kiss that feels best, it’s an image. Something different is happening if it’s a good kiss.” And that’s kissing 101 taught by professor Franco.

9. 3rd Person James

James Franco is an odd character at times to those who do not know him. He sometimes will refer to himself in the 3rd person. Director Danny Boyle, who worked with Franco on the feature film 127 Hours, told The Telegraph an interesting story about filming on the set. Boyle remembered, “while we were shooting the film, he would sometimes ask me, ‘What do you want him to do?’ I would say, ‘What do you mean?’ He would say, ‘What do you want from him in the scene?’ I said, ‘You mean your character?’ Franco replied, ‘No, no. Franco. What do you want from Franco?’ James Franco was talking about himself in third person. I said, ‘Well, I think he should be more emotional.’ Franco responded with, ‘Oh, I can get him to do that.’” Ha-ha. That is probably the best exchange between and actor and director we’ve ever seen.

8. Franco the Transvestite

James Franco, who is always up for surprises, decided in October 2010 to pose for talented celebrity photographer Terry Richardson on the cover of Candy, the first transversal style magazine. According to a blurb for the magazine, “CANDY is the first fashion magazine ever completely dedicated to celebrating transvestism, transexuality, cross dressing and androgyny, in all its manifestations. Never before in history, have men and women had so many opportunities for body modification, or so many ways to change their appearance from head to toe: from the softest options like make up, to permanent transformations courtesy of the surgeons’ knife.” Franco was wearing red lipstick, blue eyeshadow and heart-shaped earrings for the cover of the magazine. Gay rumors quickly flew all over the Internet.

7. Hosts The Academy Awards

Most people who host the Academy Awards wouldn’t be considered weird. However, Franco’s appearance along the side of Anne Hathaway on February 27, 2011 for the 83rd Oscars Show was something out of the Twilight Zone. Franco was his casual smooth self. However, his personality did not play well at the big event and Franco got a lot of slack for the performance. Some people accused him of being high (on marijuana) during the telecast. Franco replied with “I think the Tasmanian Devil would look stoned standing next to Anne Hathaway. She has a lot of energy!” In an interview with Playboy, Franco later slammed the writing for the show citing, “I just don’t think this stuff’s going to be good.” He also said he felt “kind of trapped in the material” and that there was “no way out.” In addition to being a tad bit solemn during the show, Franco also appeared in drag which mainly drew crickets.

6. Brotherly Interview

One day, Dave Franco, James Franco’s little brother, opted to spend the day with him and follow his big brother around with a camera. The younger Franco captured quite a bit of footage from the all-day “interview.” Entitled “James Franco: Five More Ways,” Dave hangs out with his big brother all day and captures some hilarious one on ones with him. First off, James makes fun of Dave for sleeping too much. It is a keen insight into James Franco who says, “Don’t you feel like you have stuff to do? Don’t you feel like there’s always stuff to do?” James Franco doesn’t like to go to bed because he believes it is “admitting failure,” according to Dave. What also is funny about the interview is that James turns the tables on Dave and constantly peppers him with questions like which Zach do you like more: Efron or Braff (from their days working on Scrubs)? Also, an interesting part of the interview is how James fashions himself as the ugly duckling growing up who was on the outside as opposed to his brother Dave, who was homecoming king and most popular in school.

The interview is pretty hilarious and insightful. Catch it at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MwT_10russ.

5. Strange Short Story

James Franco writes a short story about not having sex with Lindsay Lohan. The short story, entitled “Bungalow 89,” is a crazy story which intertwines Franco’s reality with numerous pop culture references and combines all this with his very creative imagination. The story talks about a “Hollywood Guy” named James who stars in the movie Milk (all clearly about James Franco) and a “Hollywood Girl” with the not-so-subtle name of Lindsay Lohan. In the story, Franco writes “she was famous because she was a talented child actress, and now she’s famous because she gets into trouble.” Ouch. Franco intertwines celebrities throughout the story and speaks about how they lied in bed together but didn’t have sex because she was lying on his shoulder. It is odd to say the least.

4. Spoof Video

In 2013, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian stirred up the Internet when the two strangely teamed up in West’s music video for the song “Bound 2.” Both West and Kardashian were made fun of to no end for their lovingly cheesy ways showcased in the video. Insert James Franco into the picture. He and guy pal, Seth Rogen, decided they too can make a video with cheesy romance. So, as Franco drove a motorcycle just as West does, Rogen takes the Kardashian role seriously as he goes topless and mounts Franco from the front. Behind them, a very cheesy static background of the desert West slowly passes by. Franco’s arm wraps around Rogen to reach the handles and Rogen grabs both sides of Franco’s face. The two are touching noses as they play the spoof all the way to a crazy kiss, hilariously mimicking the video.

3. Invisible Art

Art fans are known for their extraordinary tastes. They like all kinds of things and sometimes it can make the casual buyer or fan scratch their heads. James Franco saw Kickstarter becoming insanely popular and opted to launch a creative campaign of his own. Franco created “invisible art.” That’s right, it’s just as it sounds…invisible. Franco comically launched the Kickstarter campaign, most likely to see who would actually donate money to the dummy creation. The Kickstarter campaign clearly stated: “When you contribute to this Kickstater project, you are not buying a visible piece of art,” the project warned. Someone reportedly paid $10,000 for a piece called “Fresh Air.” I wonder if they will hang up the “invisible artwork” in their house or just leave it floating outside for people to appreciate as they enter.

2. Franco The Artist

James Franco has an extraordinary thirst for artistic expression. Whether it is method acting, sculpting, painting or teaching a variety of courses in the arts, Franco seems to be everywhere he can possibly be. He submerses himself in as many artistic endeavors as possible. To display his artistic side, Franco held an art show at a newly opened gallery in New York City. The art gallery included penis noses, strange masks and a dead cat. His art tends to showcase a lot of male genitalia. In Franco’s student film he dashes through the Louvre wearing a penis on his nose. Despite his free expression of sexuality, Franco states he is not gay, but he seems to have a deep interest in the subject of human sexuality.

1. Three’s Company

In January, nearly everyone in the movie business converge on the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. There are dramatic features that aspire to make a big splash in the business. Generally, this is a time for multi-million dollar budgeted “independent” features to get noticed and nab distribution deals. Franco, a huge fan of the silly television series, Three’s Company, decided to make a new met-art piece called Three’s Company: A Drama. Yes, you heard right, Three’s Company, A Drama. Franco’s film was to view the 1970s sitcom from “a slightly oblique perspective.” To bring the new vision to life, Franco re-created the first three episodes of the hit show and took away the laugh track. His film was projected up onto the four screens in the theater so his vision surrounded the audience. Franco placed the audience in between the action and brought them right into the show’s living room. Strange indeed.
