The world of gaming has become an integral part of modern day culture. Older generations can barely remember a time when a console couldn't be found in nearly every house, and younger generations don't even know a life without them. Ever since Pong became a household name and game in the early 1970s, the video game industry has only become more popular. And so have the profiles of the people who play them.
Gone are the days when gamers were typecast as being boys, kids and nerds. These days, the term gamer includes everyone. Kids are still just as into the industry as they ever were. But now enthusiasts include people of all ages, slackers and professionals, the dropouts and well-educated, and yes, even women.
Whether it's getting involved in an epic saga like World of Warcraft or just casually playing a few heated games of Angry Birds on their phones, women have become the fastest rising demographic in the video gaming industry. This point has brought many issues to the forefront of the industry, such as sexism in gaming and the fact that video games in general are completely male-driven games. But the more women who fess up to their love for gaming, the quicker all that will change. Here are 10 female celebrities who don't have any trouble confessing their addictions to games. Find out who is more serious about it than others.
10 Adrianne Curry
Adrianne Curry made somewhat of a name for herself when she won the first season of Tyra Banks' show, America's Next Top Model. She kept it alive for a while when she had a string of reality shows involving her tumultuous relationship with Brady Bunch star, Christopher Knight. These days, she keeps her name from flat lining by dressing up in revealing costumes to attend comic conventions and post on social media. She has claimed a mega addiction to World of Warcraft, which has received criticism by some who say that she's just trying to get more attention. But the model's Twitter page is filled with references to WoW, so maybe there is more there than meets the eye.
9 Zooey Deschanel
The doe-eyed, sultry-voiced Zooey Deschanel has confessed to a mild case of gaming addiction. It is, however, much like what her critics often say about her: too sweet to be taken seriously. Deschanel claimed that she was completely obsessed with the Nintendo series, The Legend of Zelda. When asked about it during an interview, she simple said, "Obsessively, I play Zelda. I had to, as sort of a show of pure willpower, give away my Super Nintendo machine because I was so obsessed with Zelda."
Unfortunately, the reporter did not ask her to elaborate on using the term "Nintendo machine."
8 Cameron Diaz
Cameron Diaz went from a no-name actress to an A-list Hollywood celebrity with her role alongside Jim Carrey in The Mask. Since then, she has become known for her tomboy ways off-screen, just as much as she has her sexy looks in front of the camera. Diaz has copped to having a major soft spot for World of Warcraft and even said that she feared she had legitimately become addicted at one point. Although she seems to have gotten her addiction under control, she says that she still plays whenever she can. A few internet hoaxes have gone around trying to expose her user handle, but she says none have actually been her.
7 Felicia Day
One of the biggest female names in the Geek World goes to none other than the redheaded beauty Felicia Day. When she's not acting in geek-fueled movies or attending conventions as a panelist (read: not a costumed spectator), Day is always trying to squeeze in a little gaming time. In fact, she loves gaming so much, she even has a self-created web series about the lives of online gamers called The Guild.
6 Christina Aguilera
Believe it or not, songstress Christina Aguilera has copped to having a big time love for all-things Nintendo and Mario. And she seems pretty serious about it. "My sister and I have Mario Party battles and I can't wait for more Mario," She said during Nintendo's Hollywood & Highland Gala Event in October 2002. And then in 2008, she told MTV that her favorite portable game was Mario Kart DS and just so happened to mention her seriously impressive collection of portable Nintendo systems including a Gameboy Advanced SP in every color available, with an emphasis on the Limited Edition Pokemon models.
5 Janina Gavankar
It's hard to believe that someone as smoking hot as actress Janina Gavankar, would be so seriously involved in the gaming world. But that just goes to show that stereotypes are never to be taken seriously. The True Blood star and hopeful singer is a self-professed video game addict, but she has the stuff to back it up. A chronicle of her gaming adventures can be found on her blog, and she used to appear on the G4 show Attack of the Show! and Epileptic Gaming's Up All Night to review video games. Of all of the games she loves, though, Gavankar has said that her favorite way to unwind is with a good old fashioned round of Dr. Mario.
4 Mila Kunis
Mila Kunis might be considered one of the hottest actresses in Hollywood, but she's also completely comfortable with her geek side. She reportedly spent so much time playing World of Warcraft, she said that she had to quit cold turkey for the sake of actually having a life outside of gaming. Along with WoW, she admits to loving Call of Duty, too. In an interview, she said "with the Nazi zombies, that, to me, is really fun. You finish 'Call of Duty' first person, okay? You unlock this little game and your whole purpose is just to kill these Nazi zombies. You have to board up the windows. And I’m not necessarily good at it. It’s just fun."
3 Rosario Dawson
While juggling her time as a breathtaking actress, Rosario Dawson says that she loves to squeeze in some quality game time. But she isn't just a player in the gaming world, she's also a contributor. She was the voice of scientist Lily Draw in the game Syndicate, and also won the Gamer's Choice "Breakthrough Performance" award during the Spike TV VGA's in 2006 for her role as Tine in Marc Ecko's Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure.
2 Megan Fox
Before Megan Fox took on her role in Transformers, you didn't hear much about her geeky side. Nowadays though, it seems to be what she really loves to discuss. She told Collider magazine that she has a serious addiction to playing Halo on X-Box Live until the wee hours of the morning. "It is sick. I play online mostly and [other gamers] have no idea. They make fun of my gamer tag, too, because it is funny." Along with Halo, the actress says she is particularly good at playing Mortal Kombat. "I have that down and I don't cheat. That game just works well with my brain. The way my brain fires signals works well with how that game works. And I'm just really good."
1 Olivia Munn
Olivia Munn has been hailed many times as the ultimate girl of every geeky guy's dreams. When she first made a splash as co-host on the popular G4 show Attack Of The Show, many were skeptical about Munn's claims of being a fellow geek and gaming lover. But, she quickly won a lot of people over with her love of cartoons, Pabst beer, and tons of talk on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. She has said that her ideal night would include "a case of Pabst Blue Ribbon and playing some 'Guitar Hero' until three in the morning".
