Primetime shows contain an enthralling mix of dramas, comedies, supernatural and sci-fi fantasies – and just about everything in between. But there is one thing that most shows (thankfully) have in common: hot couples that have powerful chemistry on screen and who experience romances that are riveting, steamy, and sometimes even tragic. There are many on-screen couples that we love to tune in and watch. Some have stories that are more engaging than others, including powerful tales of forbidden or impossible love and complicated love triangles. Some of our favorite couples are faced with so many difficulties that they leave us hanging on to little more than hope that the stories of their love will continue week after week. These love stories are often as riveting to watch on screen as they are fun to speculate about: some couples, after all, will survive the test of time, while others will inevitably be separated or torn apart by whatever challenge that is thrown their way. Not all television romances are created equal, however. It takes a skilled team of writers and sometimes even better actors to pull off a convincing romance on screen. Some romances fall flat or, if they’re dragged out for too long, manage to lose our interest. The following are a few of on-screen romances that currently have us on the edge of our seat, hoping that these couples will find a happy ending with each other.
10 Stefan and Elena and Damon and Elena (Vampire Diaries)
9 Meredith and Derek (Grey’s Anatomy)
8 Castle and Beckett (Castle)
7 Booth and Brennan (Bones)
6 Regina and Robin Hood (Once Upon a Time)
The “Evil Queen” Regina (Lana Parrilla) has spent a couple of seasons of this fairy tale drama without any luck – or interest – in finding true love, but has recently found the man that she had once been told she was destined to fall in love with. Her suitor was none other than the honorable thief and (sexy) Robin Hood (Sean Maguire). Although their romance is still in its infant stages on screen, if their flirting and chemistry so far is any indication, it’s certain to be a juicy love affair.
5 Vincent and Catherine (Beauty and the Beast)
The developing romance between characters Catherine (Kristin Kreuk), a NYPD detective, and Vincent (Jay Ryan) has been a backdrop of the show. The couple’s relationship began when Vincent saved Catherine (unbeknownst to her) and he kept tabs on her over the years. They eventually became friends and their romance sparked in the pilot of the show and has continued to build on screen.
4 Mindy and Danny (Mindy Project)
Although Mindy (Mindy Kahling) has had several onscreen beaus, there is something special between Mindy and Danny (Chris Messina), who recently shared a steamy onscreen kiss during the episode’s mid-season finale. Clearly, the couple had a few pent-up feelings for each other when it happened. Unfortunately, their relationship is just beginning, and if Mindy’s other on-screen romances are any indication, there is certain to be a roller coaster in store for this couple.
3 Olivia Pope and Fitzgerald Grant (Scandal)
Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington), the advisor to President Grant (Tony Goldwyn) in the political thriller “Scandal,” has carried her professional duties into the bedroom by also being his mistress. Since its start, the show has included the messy love affair between this professional duo. Although politicians are well known to have romances (both on screen and in real life), this particular on-screen affair is sweetened by the fact the President really does seem to love Olivia.
2 Santana and Brittany (Glee)
The on-again, off-again relationship between former glee club stars and cheerleaders Santana (Naya Rivera) and Brittany (Heather Morris) has been a part of the show’s storyline for several seasons. The girls were recently re-united in the show’s fifth season and seem to agree that it is difficult to stay apart, but only time will tell if these two are meant to be together.
1 Nick and Jess (New Girl)
After a drawn-out “will they or won’t they” game since the show first aired, the quirky roommates Jess (Zooey Deschanel) and Nick (Jake Johnson) finally got together by the end of the show’s second season. Even though it’s not difficult for viewers to get the sense that the offbeat couple is meant for each other, there has been trouble in paradise since they officially became a couple. The stubborn duo is having a difficult time getting over some differences, and it looks like they face a rocky road ahead.
