Keeping track of who’s hating on who is one of the best parts of following the goings-on of the Hollywood elite. Whether it’s a feud between starlets, rappers or those who are simply famous for being famous, the juicier the spat the better. And Kanye West has given new meaning to the celebrity feud. Seldom one to hold his tongue, West seems to have a problem with just about everyone. Many remember his famous feuds with fellow celebs Wiz Khalifa, Justin Timberlake and Jimmy Kimmel, of course.
And who could ever forget West’s historic feud with Taylor Swift that started after the rapper took her microphone as she was delivering her 2009 VMA acceptance speech, not only stealing her much-deserved thunder, but also using that moment to praise and promote fellow nominee Beyoncé (also known as the “Imma let you finish” moment). Following Kanye’s Twitter feed can often feel like the virtual version of holding season tickets to Madison Square Garden. West can be such a whiny brat, in fact, that the creators of South Park wrote him into an episode in which he blows up at just about everyone all because he doesn’t get an obvious joke, thereby becoming the punchline himself.
It’s no surprise, then, that plenty of those dissed by Kanye turn the tables and diss him right back. Even President Obama once called Yeezy a “jackass.” And while plenty of dudes have feuded with West, some of the most memorable tiffs have been between the rapper and the ladies. Whether it’s his ex, his foil or his mother-in-law, women have no problem calling West out on his crap.
Here are 10 women who have dissed Kanye.
10. Amy Winehouse
Back in 2008, the late songstress dissed Kanye while on stage at Glastonbury Music Festival, negatively comparing the rapper to fellow music mogul Jay-Z.
“Let’s hear it for Jay-Z. The man has got bollocks to come here, and play the tunes you don’t even know you remember,” Winehouse said during her performance. “Imagine if it was a c**t like Kanye West. ‘C**ts like Kanye’ – that should be his next album title.”
Granted Winehouse was probably in one of the drug- and alcohol-fueled hazes for which she became notorious, so anything she said should be taken with a grain of salt. Still, that’s throwing some serious shade!
When West historically interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the 2009 VMAs, fellow nominee Pink was one of many artists who took to the pop star’s defense. And in typical Pink fashion, she got straight to the point:
After calling West a “piece of s**t” and a “douche” via Twitter (and yes, Pink, we are quoting you), Pink told Access Hollywood that had their roles been reversed, she wouldn’t have been nearly as magnanimous as Swift.
“If I had had the microphone, it would have been a different night,” she said.
Now THAT would have been a ratings boom for MTV.
8. Kris Jenner
The “Momager” and Kardashian matriarch has been largely supportive of her famous son-in-law, and even her public criticisms have been given with a mother’s love. Such was the case when Jenner recently criticized West’s many Twitter rants during an appearance on Ellen:
“There have been days where there should be a no tweeting law, and I feel like I will ground him,” Jenner said with a sweet smile. “Sometimes I feel like what he is trying to say (when he talks about his $53-million debt) was that’s what he has done to spend on his clothing line over the last 15 or 20 years or whatever it’s been. But it comes out not exactly the right way and people get it misconstrued through the media and then it’s complicated, what can I say.”
In private, however, Jenner may not be so supportive of West’s behavior, which is saying alot coming from a member of the Kardashian clan.
“Kris blasted Kanye, telling him not to expect Kim or any of the family to bail him out of his (financial) mess,” a family source told Hollywood Life. “She explained to him that it’s great to invest in oneself but to use caution and know when enough is enough. It was a heated conversation. Both of them [were] trying to over talk the other. But Kris kept up with Kanye, and told him that his antics and sheer cockiness is getting in the way of his vision and clearly hurting his pockets.”
7. Whoopi Goldberg
The Academy Award-winning actress and comedienne may have recently defended West’s ego, but Goldberg hasn’t always been a Kanye fan. In 2009, The View co-host called West out for being a bully after his now infamous interruption of then-19-year-old Taylor Swift‘s VMA acceptance speech.
“It was kind of a bullying moment, you do not do that to kids,” Goldberg said during an episode of The View. “Sometimes you can get away with doing stuff, you come out and you take your chances with another adult, but with a kid you do not do that.”
When Swift recently was thrown shade after she finally addressed her ongoing feud with West during her Grammy acceptance speech, Goldberg came to her defense.
“I don’t know her music all that much, it’s not my style. But this girl had what she had and that’s why she won,” Goldberg said on The View. “I feel like if someone is taking you to task and he does it all the time and she’s not the only one he does it too but maybe she doesn’t want to be nice anymore. Maybe she’s just tired of it and says, ‘Look, I got here. You didn’t.’”
6. Kelly Cutrone
When West presented his foray in fashion to the world at a star-studded runway show during New York’s Fashion Week, industry mavens were not impressed. While Fern Mallis told the New York Post West’s line was not her style, fashion publicist Kelly Cutrone really dissed the collection.
“I’m not into his fashion thing. I think he’s fine as a rapper. I think he’s a joke as a fashion designer,” Cutrone told People. Of West’s Adidas Yeezy Boost 750 sneakers, Cutrone added, “I mean, it’s not, he’s not legit. Have you seen the product?
“Didn’t he have his own line in London, which was a disaster that he spent $10 million to do, that no one wore?”
5. Shirley Manson
What is with Kanye’s vocal admiration of Beyonce? Just last year, West once again publicly claimed another artist wasn’t as deserving of an industry award. After the rapper claimed during E’s post-Grammy show that Beck should “respect artistry” and give his Album of the Year award to Beyonce, Garbage front-woman Shirley Manson left a scathing message to West on her Facebook page.
“It is YOU who is so busy disrespecting artistry,” Manson wrote to West. “In attempting to reduce the importance of one great talent over another, you make a mockery of all musicians and music from every genre, including your own. Grow up and stop throwing your toys around. You are making yourself look like a complete tw*t.”
4. Wendy Williams
The TV host and Yeezy wasted little opportunity to throw shade at one another. While West’s wife, Kim Kardashian, was pregnant with the their son in June 2015, Williams joked that the couple were hiding a surrogate from Thailand in their home. And we’re all familiar with West’s sense of humor when it comes to himself. If she wasn’t already on his bad side, Williams took further aim at the rapper when she criticized his calling ex-girlfriend Amber Rose a stripper during a Twitter rant.
“The idea that you’re talking about Amber being a stripper — you’re not saying anything that she hasn’t admitted herself,” Williams said on her talk show. “As a matter of fact, Kanye, you’re the one who gave this stripper her come-up and, by the way, we recall meeting your wife on her back.”
Williams, who has also repeatedly questioned West’s sexuality over the years, continued to diss the musician, as well as his marriage.
“I’m embarrassed for Kim Kardashian,” Williams continued. “I’m not even going to call you ‘West’ because clearly that’s not a real marriage.”
And in case there was any doubt, the talk show host explained her comments in an interview with Radar Online:
“I think that [Kim] likes the illusion of having a husband and children. And [Kanye] likes her because he likes a nice Barbie Doll,” Williams said.
3. Kelly Clarkson
It’s hard to imagine Kelly Clarkson throwing shade at anyone, but the songstress wasn’t shy about dissing West after the 2009 “I’mma let you finish” debacle at the VMAs. After thinking the situation over a few months, the “American Idol” took to her personal blog, scolding West for his behavior.
“We’re all just curious as to what would make a grown man go on national television and make a talented artist, let alone a teenager, feel like sh*t,” Clarkson wrote. “I mean, I’ve seen you do some pretty sh**ty things, but you just keep amazing me with your tactless, as**ole ways. It’s absolutely fascinating how much I don’t like you.”
Clarkson ended her post by encouraging Swift to hold her head high: “Taylor Swift, you outsell him… that’s why he’s bitter.”
2. Amber Rose
In case you’ve been hiding under a rock recently, West and Wiz Khalifa, who both happen to be Amber Rose‘s exes, have engaged in quite the Twitter feud. Rose – and her son – got pulled into the online drama when Kanye – for the umpteenth time – referenced her stripper past and said she used her child to trap Khalifa. But Rose wasn’t about to let those comments slide off her back, and her Twitter retort nearly broke the Internet.
Her ensuing reference to West’s anus may have been liked more than 350,000 times, but Rose wasn’t finished dissing her ex boyfriend. She took to the podcast, Allegedly, and called West a “f**king clown.”
“I would never talk about kids,” she said. “It just shows the type of person he is …That just shows how f**king ridiculous he is.”
1. Taylor Swift
The feud between Yeezy and Swift has become one of epic proportions, although the two could accurately be described as “Frienemies.” After West stole her 2009 VMA moment with his unwelcome compliment of Beyonce, Swift responded in a classy fashion that was truly her style. She debuted a new song, “Innocent,” at the 2010 VMAs, which addressed the prior year’s controversy, walking what Rolling Stone called a fine line between forgiving and condescending.
Fast-forward to 2016, and Yeezy once again dissed Swift’s talent, taking at least partial credit for her success over the past seven years. In a Madison Square Garden event premiering his latest album, The Life of Pablo, West shocked audiences with the lyrics:
“I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex/Why? I made that bitch famous/Goddamn, I made that bitch famous.”
They say success is the sweetest form of revenge, and Swift certainly got hers when she won her second Grammy for Album of the Year for 1989 on Feb. 15. Without saying his name, the country sweetheart directly responded to West’s claims that he deserved any credit for her success.
“As the first woman to win Album of the Year at the Grammys twice, I want to say to all the young women out there: There are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success or try to take credit for your accomplishments or your fame,” Swift said. “But if you just focus on the work, and you don’t let those people sidetrack you, someday, when you get where you’re going, you’ll look around and you will know that it was you and the people who love you who put you there. And that will be the greatest feeling in the world.”
Now that’s class.
