Some Hollywood friendships span decades, while others span mere weeks. With endless media attention and tabloid rumors, it's easy for seemingly perfect Hollywood friends to turn into notorious Hollywood frenemies. A frenemy is simply an enemy disguised as a friend. Sometimes they’re easy to detect and the tabloids immediately pick up on it, while others are mere speculation because it’s impossible to tell whether they’re really bad friends or really good enemies, especially when both “friends” deny any and all feud rumors.
In Tinseltown, one day you're in and the next day you're out - so it's vital to keep bridges unburned, friends close, and enemies closer. After all, Hollywood is a dog eat dog world. The battle to be in the spotlight and stay relevant can bring out the worst in people, making it difficult to establish and maintain real friendships. So when celebrities are unable to get along with one another, frenemies can become a necessary evil.
When the riff occurs between BFFs, all hell breaks loose and the world gets a front row seat to the high school drama that unfolds. They say best friends are the people that are most likely to become your enemies. Clearly, these 10 notorious Hollywood frenemies are proof of this notion.
10 Lauren Conrad & Heidi Montag
Lauren Conrad and Heidi Montag met during their freshman year of college at a fashion school in San Francisco, while filming The Hills. For two years, the two were best friends until rumors spread that Conrad had apparently made a sex tape with her ex-boyfriend, Jason Wahler. The rumors were believed to have been started by Montag and now husband, Spencer Pratt.
Prior to that, Heidi reported that Lauren hated her boyfriend Spencer and demanded that she break up with them. After the rumors and the disapproval, it was Lauren versus Heidi and Spencer, and the fights were all caught on The Hills. Since the show wrapped, Heidi has reportedly tried to apologize to Lauren. Lauren’s response to Montag’s apology was, “I want to forgive you. And now I want to forget you.” Ouch! Montag who peaked during The Hills and has a net worth of $100,000 continues to discuss Conrad in interviews, while Conrad who has her own clothing line, is a New York Times Best Seller, and is reportedly worth $25 million, has yet to mention Heidi since the show wrapped in 2010.
9 Rachel Zoe & Brad Goreski
Brad Goreski found fame after starring on the Bravo series The Rachel Zoe Project, as assistant to celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe. The two were close friends and made a fabulous fashion duo, but when Goreski left the show to branch off on his own things, it went haywire. Zoe had ill feelings towards Brad, accusing him of lying and stealing her clients.
Goreski denied these accusations, telling The Daily Beast, "That's not true. I didn't even say goodbye to a lot of her clients because I didn't want anything to be misconstrued as me soliciting anybody." It got even uglier when Goreski got his own reality show, It's a Brad Brad World, which aired right after The Rachel Zoe Project. "I won't ever see it," Zoe said about the show. Despite Zoe's ill feelings towards Goreski, he only has positive things to say about her. He told The Daily Beast, "People are still digging for me to say something about her. There’s nothing to dish. I respect her and I’m very grateful for the opportunity to work with her."
8 Taylor Swift & Kendall Jenner
Taylor Swift and Kendall Jenner have been seen out together many times and it seems that the two are good friends, but in Hollywood nothing is as it seems. The bad blood between the reality star and pop singer began in late 2013, when Jenner dated Swift's ex Harry Styles for a few months.
A source told OK! Magazine, "Taylor thinks it was completely disrespectful for Kendall to be hooking up with Harry after he broke Taylor’s heart." Kendall has also gotten very close with Justin Bieber, whom Swift is not fond of since he dated BFF Selena Gomez, and left her heartbroken on more than one occasion.
Drama further ensued when Kendall refused to make a cameo in Taylor Swift's Bad Blood music video. An insider told OK! Magazine, "Kendall thinks Taylor is too full of herself and a control freak. She thinks Taylor plays people against each other. She’s happy to steer clear of her mean-girl games."
7 Ed Sheeran & Niall Horan
English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran and One Direction member Niall Horan, were BFF's until early 2014 when Horan broke major bro code. He slept with Sheeran's girlfriend, singer, Ellie Goulding while they were all staying at the same hotel. The betrayal inspired Sheeran to write the song 'Don't.'
Lyrics include: "I never saw him as a threat. Until you disappeared with him to have sex of course. It's not like we were both on tour. We were staying on the same f**king hotel floor." Speaking to Billboard about the song 'Don't', the 24-year-old singer said, "The story in 'Don’t' is 100% true. I could have gotten nastier – there was more s*** that I didn’t put in." Ed has said that he has forgiven Niall for sleeping with his girlfriend, telling The Sun Newspaper, "I guess. I got over the anger the moment I wrote the song. That’s the end of it. I’m grateful I could get a song out of it, to be honest."
6 Drake & Diddy
Prior to December 2014, Drake and Diddy were a couple of bros - but after the two got into a physical fight outside of a nightclub in Miami, these hip hop superstars quickly became frenemies. The argument stated over the rights to a song, it then escalated into a fight, and it ended with Drake in the hospital.
Drake and Diddy beefed until mid-April, but after having a phone conversation the two agreed to end the drama. Their repaired friendship was motivated by money as they both had big events scheduled and knew they would be crossing paths. In the end, they decided to make money, not war.
5 Lady Gaga & Perez Hilton
Lady Gaga and Perez Hilton became close friends when the Born This Way singer first launched her career. Hilton actively promoted Gaga on his blog and often referred to the pop star as his wifey. The friendship immediately ended during an interview when Perez interrogated Gaga. The singer felt as though Hilton was being mean and negative about her Born This Way album. He also implied that the album was a failure. Gaga became upset and said she realized how fake Perez Hilton was at this moment.
After that incident, Lady Gaga cut ties with Perez. Since then, Hilton has slammed the singer countless times in the media. He has made public statements, calling Gaga, “A vampire, Yoko Ono and a user.” Lady Gaga has responded by saying, “He’s just mad that I don’t hang out with him anymore.” Earlier this year, Hilton uploaded a video to YouTube apologizing to Lady Gaga and explaining that he has no ill feelings towards her. Lady Gaga has yet to respond.
4 Kim Kardashian & Paris Hilton
Back in the day, before anyone even knew who or what a Kardashian was, Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian were the best of friends. When Paris became a tabloid queen, Kim was there by her side, but in her shadow. Paris had it all in the early 2000s; a hit reality show, a slew of endorsements, and endless fame. She was the 'It' girl.
This all changed in 2007 with the release of Kim Kardashian’s sex tape and the premiere of Keeping Up With The Kardashians. Kim emerged from Paris Hilton’s shadow and walked right into the spotlight. As Kim became more and more famous, Paris became more and more jealous. In 2008, the hotel heiress said in a radio interview, “I would not want Kim’s butt – it’s gross… it reminds me of cottage cheese inside a big trash bag.” Kim Kardashian responded, “If Paris Hilton thinks my butt looks gross. I really don’t care. At least I have a butt.” It appears losing the “It Girl” status was clearly a sore spot for Ms. Hilton. Since their fallout the two have reconciled and "appear" to be on good terms; however, you won't ever catch them hanging out.
3 Selena Gomez & The Jenners
Selena Gomez and Kendall & Kylie Jenner are another set of Hollywood friends turned frenemies thanks to a boy - and that boy's name is Justin Bieber. Gomez and Bieber dated for quite some time, but their relationship was so off and on, it was difficult to keep track of. This past spring, Gomez's friend Kendall Jenner, was spotted out with Justin Bieber and the two are said to have hooked up.
Although Selena and Bieber were broken up, she was devastated that her friend would break girl code and do that to her. The two unfollowed each other on Twitter and Instagram, indicating the end of a friendship. Younger sister, Kylie Jenner took Kendall's side. Recently, Selena said she has forgiven Kendall, but there's still no communication between the trio.
2 Taylor Swift & Katy Perry
Pop stars Taylor Swift and Katy Perry were friends at one point. The two Tweeted each other, joined one another on stage during performances, and were photographed together. In 2013, the two stopped publicly corresponding and no one really took notice - that is until Swift opened up about the inspiration for her 'Bad Blood' song in an interview with Rolling Stone, in September 2014.
Swift didn't say who the song was about, but some of the details she gave were pretty identifying. Later that day Katy Perry Tweeted, "Watch out for the Regina George in sheep's clothing..." Turns out the feud started in 2013, when three dancers left Swift mid-tour to work with Perry. The two have never mentioned each other's names, but it's obvious Swift and Perry are one of Hollywood's most notorious frenemies - even if they won't admit it.
1 Kim Kardashian & Beyoncé
Kim Kardashian and Beyonce are the epitome of Hollywood frenemies, because no one is sure if they are frenemies or if they're actually friends - but all signs point to the former. For instance, Beyonce and husband Jay Z, skipped out on Kim and Kanye's wedding at the last minute. They were said to have been working, but were photographed on vacation in the Hamptons.
The two tried to squash feud rumors; however, at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards (the first public event they both attended since the wedding), Kim and Beyonce completely avoided one another. It's also reported that Kim and sisters, Kylie and Kendall, walked out right before Jay Z presented Beyonce with her Video Vanguard Award.
Sources have also reported that the two are not fond of each other and simply try to get along because their husbands are so close. Beyonce reportedly thinks that Kim Kardashian is a social climber and isn't on her level, while Kim reportedly thinks Beyonce has always been very arrogant and aloof around her. Now, Beyonce isn't one to open up about her personal issues or feuds, and Kim Kardashian would never publicly declare war against Queen Bey and her Beehive, so we may never know whether or not these two are friends or frenemies.
