When the CW’s sci-fi series The 100 introduced Lexa, a feisty warrior woman, it didn’t take long for fans of the show to immediately start shipping her and main character Clarke as “Clexa” and imagining them together. To their delight and surprise, however, the show actually had the two getting close and exchanging a steamy kiss. It’s hit complications but the third season seems to be pushing the two more together with Clarke doing a hot love scene with another woman to show she certainly swings that way. This came not long after the producers of the animated series The Legend of Korra basically confirmed that the finale ended with Korra and best friend Asamai together.
TV series have long played with the idea of two main female characters who can be more than “just friends.” The advent of the Internet coincided with the debut of Xena and thus the Sapphic following for Xena and Gabrielle grew huge. It’s continued since for various TV show pairings, from Olivia Benson and Alex Cabot of Law & Order:SVU to even teen comedies like Tori and Jade on Victorious. The fact some shows seem open to confirming these as for real gives hope some of these “dream” pairings can become reality. Here are 10 current TV female friends we’d love to see take that extra step and reward the dreams of fans while making sense for their show.
10 Jessica Jones and Trish Walker - Jessica Jones
True friends are there for each other, no matter the agony and Jessica and Tirsh are proof. Jessica (Krysten Ritter) is the super-strong woman shattered by her experiences as the mind-controlled slave of twisted Killgrave. Trish (Rachael Taylor) is the former child star who had her own rough times and is training to be a fighter. They lean on each other for support against Killgrave who uses them both and if not for their bond, both would be far worse off. Given their very poor track record with men, it wouldn’t be a surprise for the two to connect with each other and handle things well. Of course, Trish would have the challenge of keeping up with Jessica’s strength crushing their beds but a small price to pay for a good pairing to allow them to bond more and give fans of the show more heat.
9 Emma Swan and Regina Mills - Once Upon a Time
Their relationship has gone from bitter enemies to respect to needing each other as friends. No matter what stage, fans of what has become known as “Swan Queen” have stated the true love story of ABC’s fairy tale saga is between Jennifer Morrison and Lana Parilla’s characters. The tough leather-jacket wearing gal and the former Evil Queen always clash nicely in arguments but also a bond that carries them through other times. Their mix of outfits has been fun too and how Morrison showed a darker side as Emma this season against a more noble Regina was interesting to watch. While both have been given male lovers, fans of the show feel these two are far better off together for a couple that can truly be magic.
8 Aria, Hanna, Emily, Spencer - Pretty Little Liars
With four hot leads, it’s no surprise Freeform’s long-running hit has sparked quite a few dreams among its fans, pushed by how Shay Mitchell’s Emily is gay. Many have pushed the idea of Emily and Hanna, mainly due to the real-life friendship between Mitchell and Ashley Benson and how the two hang out the most on the show from dance routines to talking about their wild lives. Meanwhile, the idea of the ultra-tightly wound Spencer (Torian Bellisario) and the offbeat Aria (Lucy Hale) mingling together to try and handle things is also quite intriguing as the quartet lean on their bond to get through the insanity of their lives. That’s not to mention how the show has all but openly stated that Mona (Janel Parrish) and Ali (Sasha Pieterse) had a fling in the past with hints it can start again. The series just did a “time jump” to the gals as young adults and one can easily see that before it’s all done, at least a couple of the Liars find some truth in they’re better off together than any guy.
7 Stella Gibson and Reed Smith - The Fall
While she’s best known as Dana Scully on The X-Files, Gillian Anderson is getting raves for her performance in this British hit as Stella, a London cop investigating a murder spree in Ireland. She ends up clicking with Reed, the medical examiner played by The Good Wife’s Archie Panjabi who has an affinity for driving motorcycles and a nice charm. The chemistry between them was high as, at a club, they played the classic “pretend to be a couple to drive jerks away” trick which included a kiss. Stella then invited Reed to her room but Reed declined despite how it was obvious she wanted to say yes. The third season hits Netflix later this year and it’s only logical the two finally give in to that temptation as the bond between them is so amazingly obvious and the fact both women are so amazingly sexy as hell would make this one couple to fall for.
6 Tatsu and Nyssa - Arrow
When Katrina Law first appeared on the CW super-hero hit, she got attention as the daughter of notable DC villain Ra’s al Ghul. However, what really rocked fans was the revelation she and Sara (Caity Lotz) had been lovers. Since then, Nyssa has been shown a tough as nails warrior who enjoys her work while trying to honor her father’s name. While she’s had a bond with the other female characters, she and Tatsu aka Katana (Devon Aoki) seem to have something special. Both have lost loves and sunk themselves into combat, needing something to fill the hole. Their sword fight in a recent episode seemed far more a romantic “meet cute” in some ways, the two with obvious attraction to each other in the combat and just seem so perfect for one another. Arrow focuses on the main heroes but hooking these two female warriors up would hit the bulls-eye wonderfully.
5 Shaw and Root - Person of Interest
It’s not exactly a grand romance for CBS’ gripping crime/sci-fi drama. Both women are borderline sociopaths with Root a complete nutcase to boot. But from the start, it was obvious Sarah Shahi and Amy Acker had a fantastic appeal together and their talks were great (“Don’t make me look bad.” “I couldn’t make you look bad if I tried.”). It was easy to imagine the two having an off-screen relationship with stuff like a mission to Miami and their idea of “girl time” being blasting away guys with guns just made it better. When Shaw seemed to sacrifice herself (due to Shahi’s unplanned pregnancy), she gave Root a long kiss before going and it was clear Root was driven by love to get her back. With Shaw returning for the show’s upcoming (and perhaps final) season, a reunion would be terrific and while it’s not exactly hearts-and-flowers, Shoot would be a pairing hotter than most on this list and how even the darkest souls can find a connection.
4 Max and Caroline - 2 Broke Girls
Almost a third of the jokes of CBS’s comedy hit revolve around the homoeroticism of Kat Dennings as sardonic Max and Beth Behrs as formerly rich Caroline. It’s been all but openly stated Max has had a bisexual past and while Caroline is a bit more laid-back, she’s been learning new things hanging with Max. They’ve played with it at times to pose as a couple, including a funny bit where, realizing they’re being “honored” by an anti-gay organization, share a kiss on stage to tick them off. While both have had male lovers, you can tell the obvious care for each other beats any of those as they openly say they need each other. So it would only make sense for them to finally just be a couple, sharing all things although you can be sure it wouldn’t be your typical romance given their equally unique personalities. Still, seeing these two as a couple can make this show a bit more bearable and be quite rich in some hot times.
3 Rory Gilmore and Paris Gellar - Gilmore Girls
Originally, Paris was just a small character on the WB/CW series, an ultra-type A personality clashing with Rory’s more laid-back gal in schoolwork. However, Liza Weil’s performance with humor and drive won viewers over and she was made a series regular as Paris found her “perfect plan” for Harvard undone and having to rely on different means of support. She and Rory became roommates and friends with the show’s usual quirky dialogue highlighting their fun times and Weil and Alexis Bledel’s banter was always terrific to see. With the series making a comeback on Netflix, it might be fun to see the two reuniting and facing up to the feelings they always had. Not only a good couple together but the wonderful dialogue about this affair would be a highlight and make this a returning series more than worth the wait.
2 Supergirl and Cat Grant - Supergirl
It’s an odd pairing but one that’s taking off nicely. No one can deny the lovely presence Melissa Benoist has as both the Maid of Steel and her mild-mannered alter ego. But Calista Flockhart is being hailed as the best part of the show as the icy Cat Grant, always ready with a wicked put-down and looking lovely in her power outfits. Their chemistry is unique as Kara can handle a super-powered alien but still fearful of what her boss might do while Cat is a wicked witch on heels but a softer side she tries to hide. Their talks are good as Cat unknowingly gives Kara the pep talks and advice she needs to be Supergirl and help out. It’s smart as Cat has figured out who Kara is (although Kara got shape-changer J’onn J’onzz to help put her off the trail) and their bond remains pretty good as these two just shine together on screen. Given how it’s been broadly hinted Cat swings both ways, you can see her and Kara maybe linking up and such a pairing can make this show even more super to watch.
1 Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles - Rizzoli & Isles
Seriously, who else could top the list? Since the beginning, TNT’s mystery series has been called “the best lesbian partner cop show that doesn’t realize it yet.” The chemistry between Angie Harmon’s cop Jane Rizzoli and Sasha Alexander’s medical examiner, Maura Isles, has been prevalent, the tomboy and the upscale gal, street smarts and book smarts and both look utterly gorgeous no matter what the job is. They hang out, they’ve had sleepovers, they’ve seen each other naked, they’re a couple in every single way except a kiss. True, both have been pushed to male lovers but it’s so obvious they belong together, it’s stunning. With the show entering its final season, the time is right to end it the way fans want and give the show’s fandom a great send-off to one fantastic couple.
