Hollywood stars love to shock audiences. Proving they're capable of wild transformations is a sure-fire way to make it onto every casting director's dream list. It's not easy to stay at the top, so stars are constantly thinking of new ideas to reinvent themselves. This might require transforming their guarded image so drastically that even their own mother won't recognize them - and not just throwing on any old wig to fool undiscerning audiences.
Over the years the big screen has witnessed some true commitment from huge stars: Natalie Portman shaving her head to star in V for Vendetta, Christian Bale slimming down to a dangerous 110 pounds for The Machinist and Tom Hardy gaining 50 lbs of pure muscle to become Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. These are just a few huge names who really got stuck into becoming their characters both emotionally and physically. You can't deny their dedication.
Why go through all this when gracing the screen in their natural form can still mean a huge pay day? Often, it's because the critical acclaim and Oscar glory that comes along hand-in-hand with the transformation can be extremely rewarding. Take a note out of Charlize Theron's book who was unrecognisable as serial killer Aileen Wuornos, her hair and make-up dilapidated, but the pay off was the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2003.
Audiences love nothing more than watching their favourite stars reappear as someone completely new, and 2015 has plenty of surprises in store. The following are ten actors this year that will have viewers gasping in their cinema seats, asking "are you absolutely sure that's him?"...
5 Meryl Streep - Ricki and The Flash
Just when you thought Meryl Streep couldn't get any cooler, she picks up a guitar and starts to sing in her new movie Ricki and The Flash; due for release August this year. At 64 years old, Streep won't let anyone hold her back or tell her what roles to take on; she is a feminist icon. This new comedy drama will see her become a rock chick who's better days are past her but as long as there is spotlight - she wants to be in it.
Paparazzi who have been stalking the production managed to get sneaky shots of a leather clad Streep on set, rocking it in tight jackets and torn jeans leaving everyone gasping, "Surely that's not really her!"
There isn't an award ceremony around that doesn't like to throw recognition at this actress and she is currently on her 18th Oscar nomination and 3rd win. The movie will be directed by Jonathan Demme (Silence Of The Lambs and Philadelphia) and is sure to please critics and audiences worldwide.
4 Jamie Bell - The Fantastic Four
In The Fantastic Four (2015) we will see Billy Elliot - sorry, Jamie Bell - become huge, heavy and quite angry as The Thing. This is a character that has always been much loved by Marvel Universe fans and Bell has a distinct like-ability that will be able to carry-off the role; making this one perfect casting.
Before he transforms his persona he's known as just plain old Benjamin Grimm, although he doesn't have the closest relationship with his team (due to having quite the temper) they just couldn't be without their stone-covered hero. The movie also stars Miles Teller, Kate Mara and Michael B. Jordan.
3 Miles Teller - Bleed For This
Miles Teller (oh yeah - the drummer guy!) is probably sick of being beaten up in his most recent roles. Last year he was a drummer that took some blows to the head from J.K Simmons' character in Whiplash (2014), but that was nothing compared to the punches that will be thrown at him in Bleed for This which is coming this year.
Teller is already an Oscar nominee and he appears to be doing all the right footwork to be recognised for an award once again. In Bleed for This he plays real-life boxer Vinny Pazienza; former lightweight champion. He would box under the nickname 'The Pazmanian Devil' and was well known for winning by 30 knockouts in 60 matches.
Looks like Teller has been throwing those protein shakes down his neck as his entire body has gone through an intense transformation.
2 Aaron Taylor-Johnson & Elizabeth Olsen - Avengers: Age of Ultron
Wait just one minute...isn't that the lovely couple from Godzilla (2014)? After shooting wrapped on the city-destroying epic from last year, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen must have packed up their goods and headed over to Marvel Studios to shoot Avengers: Age of Ultron; which is due out soon.
With Taylor-Johnson sporting his dashing blonde-looks (certainly channeling his inner goddess here) for the role of Quicksilver and Olsen looking sultry with thick eyeliner to play the Scarlet Witch; these two are almost unrecognisable.
Move over Mary-Kate and Ashley, it's big-sis Elizabeth's time to shine now.
1 Margot Robbie - Suicide Squad
Margot Robbie started as an actress on Australian soap opera Neighbours, she then was bought to the attention of audiences (and many excitable men) when she starred beside Leonardo Di Caprio in The Wolf of Wall Street (2013). Her humour, sex appeal and versatile acting skills have now made her one of the most sought-after actresses in Hollywood.
In 2016, we will see Robbie appear as Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad as part of the DC Universe franchise. Everyone is anticipating her big reveal and how her character is going to look, but fan-sites have been going crazy with mock-ups of her possible costumes.
Once again she will prove to the world that she is far removed from her soap-roots and the only way is up for the 24 year old.
