If you’ve ever suffered from a low sex drive, you’ve got nothing to be ashamed of – and anybody who thinks so deserves to have their Man Card officially revoked. According to a recent survey, around one in five men have a low sex drive. And who knows? Maybe many men are happy with that. Asexuality is a thing, and not everyone is all that bothered about sex anyway. For a majority of people, though, experiencing a low sex drive can be pretty demoralizing, and even if it’s nothing to be embarrassed about, it’s still something you’d want to avoid – kind of like the common cold.
We don’t have solutions for the common cold, but there are plenty of ideas for revving up your libido a few notches – if that’s something you’re struggling with. To be clear, though, changes in your sex drive can be caused by a wide variety of things. These suggestions will help in many cases, but sometimes the solution is less simple. If your problems persist and it’s an issue for you, you should certainly consider seeing a doctor about it. Again, there’s no shame in it, and it’s a very common problem. It’s nothing they haven’t heard before, and they might well be able to fix it with a very simple change. Don’t let pride get in the way – but by all means, try these 10 things first:
10. Change It Up
Not to state the obvious, but has sex gotten boring for you recently? If everything’s started to feel the same, then it’s pretty likely that you were going to start switching off from it sooner or later. One easy way to combat this is to search around the internet for something you and your partner are interested in trying – or find someone who’s interested in trying the same thing, if you’re single. Don’t be afraid to go for something outside the box if it sounds even a little appealing. The saying is as true for sex as it is for anything else: don’t knock it until you try it. You never know – kinkiness might literally change your life. (We’re not even exaggerating.)
9. Eat Some Aphrodisiacs
Nope, they’re not a myth. Certain foods are genuinely proven to put you in the mood and improve your libido. We’re not talking about snorting ground-up elephant testicles here, or anything like that – but chocolate, honey, figs, bananas and oysters are all known to have a measurable effect, as well as many other foods. Take a look at your diet and see if you can’t shuffle a few more of these aphrodisiacs in there on a more regular basis. The fruits and vegetables will also improve your diet in general. Bonus!
8. Get More Sleep
Exhaustion is a big contributor to a lack of sex drive – and while that might sound like it’s stating the obvious, you might also not realize it if you’re not getting enough sleep. So many of us are used to skipping by on six hours instead of eight, that we forget how much better it feels to get a full night of sleep every night, and we stop noticing that we’re missing out on those benefits. Try getting to bed even just one hour earlier, and see if that makes a difference for you. If not, well… hey. One hour extra in bed. Can’t complain, right?
7. See Red
Ever wondered why advertisements use specific color schemes to try and sell you different things? Different colors inspire different connections in our brains – and while experts disagree about how strong these reactions really are, it can’t hurt to try and play on them. Painting one of your walls red, or even switching to red bedding, may well give your brain the extra kick it needs. It may also be home décor mumbo-jumbo with a placebo effect, but if it works, then who cares?
6. Focus On The Senses
Okay, one more and we swear we’re done with this kind of stuff – but supposedly, we tend to go about our everyday lives in a way that’s quite detached from our senses. Cutting ourselves off from noticing the world around us can prevent the kind of sensory input that, er… gets us going. Spend five minutes on an evening just paying attention to how things sound, how your clothes feel against your skin – that kind of thing. Train your brain to notice. This does also have the benefit of distracting you from any stresses that may not be helping your libido, too, but we’ll get to that later.
5. Switch Out Your Meds
Lots of medications are known to potentially affect the libido as a side-effect, so if you’re on any pills, you may want to take a closer look at the information sheet that comes with them. Obviously, you should talk to your doctor before stopping any medications, but again – this is a really common problem, and they’ll likely be more than happy to try an alternative to avoid this side-effect. It’s a totally understandable reason to want to switch pills, and they’re not going to chew you out for asking.
4. Do Something Terrifying
Doing something that scares you gets your adrenaline pumping, as we all know – but did you know that adrenaline can have a positive effect on your libido? Well, now you do. Don’t actually do anything dangerous, obviously, but maybe now would be a good time to try out that extreme sport you’ve always been interested in. You’d be surprised when it comes to feeling different emotions, and above all, doing something new. But again, please don’t hurt yourself.
3. Get Some Hard Exercise
Exercise gets your heart racing, and releases endorphins into your body that can really enhance your libido. Not only that, but it improves your circulation and gets the blood pumping. At the same time, you’ll be getting fit and healthy. Can’t complain about that! Be warned, however, that too much exercise can have the opposite effect. Be sensible and you should be fine. If you overwork yourself, then you really won’t feel like doing anything, and romance will probably be the last thing on your mind.
2. Drink Less Alcohol
If you’re already aware that you probably drink too much, this might be the time to tone it down a notch. Even for people who don’t drink a lot, cutting down on alcohol may help improve your sex drive. If you have to drink something, however, then make it red wine. Everybody knows a glass of red wine with dinner is supposed to be good for you, but the key here is the reason why. It’s high in antioxidants, which improve your blood flow, and that’s likely to kick your sex drive up a notch.
It may sound obvious, but stress is one of the biggest causes of changes in your libido. If you’re experiencing a lot of pressure at work or you’re going through a difficult time for any reason, chances are it’s going to have a knock-on effect in this area of your life, too. It is fixable, however, in the same way as it’s possible to fix the other effects of stress. Meditating, taking a walk to get some fresh air or a nice hot shower may all help you take your pulse down a notch – and take your libido back up. You just want something to take your mind off whatever it is you’ve been stressing out about. That’s all.
