Kanye West has done and said many questionable things over the course of his successful career. When he first burst onto the scene as a rapper, West was hailed as something different. He had a refreshing sound and a musical sensibility that differed from his peers.
It was these talents that made his debut album, The College Dropout, such a hit. The album was made over the course of four years and contained memorable singles like "Jesus Walks."
However, as time went on West seemed to start believing in his own hype. He's boasted about his own talents and relevance to the culture, married a reality television star and acted out in childlike ways that people can't help but pay attention to.
Today his career seems to be less about music and more about promoting the Church of Kanye where he is preacher, congregation and "God."
10 Taylor "I'm Gonna Let Finish" Swift Incident
At the MTV Awards in 2009, Kanye West found a way to try and ruin Taylor Swift's night as well as make himself look like even more of a jerk. After Taylor went onstage to accept her award for Best Video, West joined her onstage, took the mic and let everybody know just exactly who he thought should have won. Although, he was being polite in his head by saying, "I'm gonna let you finish, but..." Kanye's true colors still showed and no one was pleased.
The positive flip side to the whole thing is the moment led to some of the greatest internet memes and gifs of all time. It was truly a moment where the whole world could see West for the egomaniac he can be.
9 Rolling Stone Cover
This is offensive even if you aren't religious. West had the bright idea to take to the cover of Rolling Stone magazine costuming himself out to...you guessed it! Jesus Christ. He even threw in the blood and crown of thorns because, you know, Kanye's struggle is so much like that of Jesus.
His explanation for the cover was like salt on the wound. The only thing you can do is just shake your head. "I throw up historical subjects in a way that makes kids want to learn about them." Ok...
He also added, in case anybody was wondering, "I'm definitely in the history books already."
8 President Kanye 2020
Sadly, in a world where former Celebrity Apprentice host, Donald Trump, is leading Republican presidential primary polls, it is nowhere near out of the question that Kanye West would run for president.
After announcing he wanted to run for president in 2020, many felt it was just Kanye being Kanye and talking out of where the sun never shines. However, he confirmed he was completely serious later saying, "I sit in clubs and I'm like, 'Wow, I've got five years before I go and run for office and I've got a lot of research to do, I've got a lot of growing up to do.'"
No word yet on whether President Kanye would interrupt other world leaders' speeches or force all of America to wear those weird shades.
7 Didn't Win For "Touch the Sky," Publicly Disagrees
It seems as though West has an issue with stages and microphones. In 2006, after winning Best Hip Hop Artist at the MTV Europe Music Awards, West still found a reason a way to make other people miserable.
After losing Best Video to Justice and Simian for "We Are Your Friends," West stormed the stage and let everybody know that he should have won because "it cost a million dollars....I was jumping across canyons."
The video West was so proud of was for his song "Touch the Sky." The video is, in fact, impressive and clearly a lot of skill and hard work went into making it. Still, West was too caught up in his own small bubble of reality to be anything close to humble.
6 Calls MTV "racist"
In 2007, MTV chose to have Britney Spears give the opening performance at the VMAs. It was a decision that made sense. She was in the midst of a pseudo comeback. Kanye, however, disagreed. And, as we know, when Kanye disagrees with something, he makes sure to let everyone know.
West was already mad having lost in all the categories he was nominated for. He then went on to say he would never return to MTV. He also stated his dream when making the song "Stronger" was to perform it as the opening act at the VMAs. He called Spears irrelevant and said perhaps he was overlooked because "maybe my skin's not right." Perhaps MTV thought Spears would get better ratings and be less of a headache.
5 Kim Music Video
The music video for "Bound 2" inspired plenty of parodies including one with Seth Rogen and James Franco. However, it really needs no parody because it already plays like one. How could this thing be serious?
It's a music video of West driving a motorcycle while his wife, Kim Kardashian, is across from him, naked, ogling at the great king known as Kanye West. It was the kind of video someone would put in a film if they were trying to satirize West videos.
The video also went on to cement what a strange giant headed ego artist Kanye is, in both his professional and personal lives.
4 Claims Coldplay Better Than the Beatles. Wait, What?
West's exact comments were "I love Coldplay, and honestly think they are on the same level as the Beatles. In 30 years, people will look back and say ‘these guys are more talented than the Beatles.'"
Essentially, the 38-year-old rapper is convinced he knows music more than anyone else and is credible enough to make such a comparison so confidently.
3 Competing with the Pyramids
West believes he's not even competing with his peers. The man's head is so big, he's somehow rationalized in his mind that his art is only to be judged next to the art of the greats.
"When I think of competition, it's like I try to create against the past. I think about Michelangelo and Picasso, you know, the pyramids," West said about his music and his thoughts towards his competition.
So, when West makes music he feels like he's competing with giant pyramids in other continents built centuries ago. No wonder this guy's head is so big.
2 Novels Suck
It should come as no surprise Kanye West doesn't like books. It should also come as no surprise that he is actually proud of disliking books.
"Sometimes people write novels and they just be so wordy and so self-absorbed. I am not a fan of books. I would never want a book's autograph. I am a proud non-reader of books," West said.
This "proud non-reader of books" believes he is also the voice of a generation. That is troublesome.
It's ironic for West to not like something because it's "self-absorbed." Also, where do you get a book's autograph? Seriously, I'd like to know. I'll be first in line.
1 If Only Kanye Could Be Kanye's #1 Fan
It certainly is a struggle to be Kanye West. Forget the real struggle of people. Hell, forget the struggle of other artists. West has it worse than all of us.
"My greatest pain in life is that I will never be able to see myself perform," said West. This quote just says everything. West should be forced to wear a shirt that says this at all times so we are no never confused about who he is.
Don't worry Mr. West. Many have seen you perform live and they would say you're not missing out on much...especially if they are in wheelchairs.
