One Direction aren’t exactly the kind of pop group that shy away from headlines, and they have attracted a lot of attention – some good, and some bad. The zeal with which fans, known as Directioners, attach themselves to the band is legendary, and it’s well known that if you attack them, you might find yourself the target of thousands of threats. In fact, even so much as being seen with one of them could make you the target for internet menace.
With this in mind, it’s perhaps surprising that so many people voice their opinion on the group – especially if their opinion is not a positive one. Thanks to the energy Directioners have for tracking down any and all mentions of their favourite stars, we have it all on record – even the times when someone made an ill-advised tweet and then deleted it right afterwards. The boys themselves have created enough news stories to make Twitter explode, with tales of joints being smoked on tour buses, trashing hotel rooms, trying to gamble while underage, sleeping with famous and beautiful women, and of course spats between themselves.
The ten celebrities on this list must have been feeling pretty brave when they woke up that morning, because they decided to take on the wrath of Directioners – and have lived to tell the tale. Here are ten people who really aren’t a fan of One Direction, and aren’t afraid to let that fact be known. Well, until later, when some of them mysteriously try to retract their opinion…
10 Demi Lovato
There were rumours flying around at one point that Demi was dating Niall, so it’s no surprise that she ended up getting asked about the boys in an interview. She was even asked if there was any chance of a duet between the singer and any members of the band. Apparently, she’s an expert at throwing shade in the most subtle of ways: her response was, "I focus more on collaborations with people who inspire me." Considering she later collaborated with rival Brit band The Vamps, that’s a fairly big insult to the One Direction boys. So that date definitely isn’t on the cards then…
9 The Wanted
1D and The Wanted have had a bit of a storied history on Twitter in particular, with all sorts of people wading in. One of their most impressive Twitter spats saw not one, not two, but THREE girlfriends getting involved, as well as multiple band members on both sides pitching in. The best zinger of the match came from The Wanted’s Jay, who told Louis: “you've done a sterling job of becoming one of the most overrated, arrogant and not to mention insincere people around. Your shocking lack of talent will only be forgiven by lots of humility and no-strings-attached friendship among your band”. He also cautioned him not to “measure your worth in followers or money, because they're fickle”.
Lorde is one of the teenage girls out there who has managed not to fall for 1D’s significant charms. "One Direction are pretty overrated and their music isn't really good," she reportedly tweeted, though the posts were of course then removed. "I find it odd they're famous." It sounds like she isn’t much of a fan – which is why it’s odd that she was then spotted attending one of their concerts. By all accounts, it looked like she had a pretty good time, too. Perhaps one of the boys chucked her some free tickets to try and change her mind?
7 James Arthur
James Arthur felt insulted by Louis Tomlinson, so he called him names on Twitter. Naturally, the sky then fell in with an onslaught of Directioners tweeting him. His response was this super long rant – take a deep breath: "And f*** boybands! Bring on the hate I don't wanna be popular. Apart from JLS who are genuinely the coolest people I've met in music... You are all correct I wouldn't be where I am if it weren't for Louis Tomlinson.. Not the years of working hard in the real world... Look, I do appreciate their help but like a lot of people.. When I said 1D were about marketing certain members of the band turned on me too ... I meant no offence and they were pretty awful to me too I don't suffer them or pretend to like... I have nothing against One Direction fans or the band itself I have an issue with one member ... they insulted me when I had nothing against them so now I don't pull any punches when I'm asked... [They] just said some things via text and the things that were said warrant my dislike for them so that's it.. I'm not being ungrateful."
6 William H. Macy
Even big-shot Hollywood actors aren’t immune to getting asked about pop’s most notorious princes. It’s a little bit of a surprise that Macy even knows who they are, but apparently he is not a fan. When asked about the band, he said that "They couldn't put on a good show with a gun to their head." That’s a fairly big statement, especially coming from someone who, at first sight, really couldn’t move in more different circles than the boys. Still, reporters are always looking for a way to create a headline with lots of buzz, and this is a diss that no one saw coming!
5 Miley Cyrus
This is a bit of a bizarre one, even for Miley. She claimed she had no idea who 1D are, saying, “I mean, don't ask me to name a song because I can't do that, but I know what they look like. I think I met Harry? I think backstage once... I don't really remember that much. I just remember my sister was super excited. I don't really know them that much... That's, like, so bad, but it's, like, I listen to urban.” All of this was AFTER she posted photos of herself with a cardboard cut-out of Harry Styles, and went into the recording studio with Niall Horan. Severe amnesia?
4 Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift has some very well-publicised reasons not to be a fan of Harry, though it seems her contempt also extends to the other members of the group – guilty by association, perhaps. She apparently whispered "Shut the f*** up," to Selena Gomez when One Direction spoke on stage at the 2013 MTV VMAs. This was probably either a reaction to Harry appearing at the awards ceremony, or the fact that she thought her buddy Selena was talking when she shouldn't have been (not likely). Either way, she should have realised the cameras would be on someone like her when her very public ex-boyfriend took to the stage, and watched her mouth.
3 Justin Timberlake
This is one ex-boybander who was inevitably going to be asked about them sooner or later. JT put his foot in his mouth when he said, “I have not seen them on stage, but I'd be willing to say that we're better than them. I don't feel like I'm laying down any kind of gauntlet. I've seen them a couple times and I like those guys. It's interesting to see this whole wave of that come back around." He later joked around on Twitter, claiming he didn’t know what the question was about and using the hashtag #newsworthy, after backlash broke.
2 Hayley Williams and New Found Glory
Hayley Williams really wasn’t happy when she heard One Direction’s “Steal My Girl” – particularly one part that sounded a bit familiar. "Beginning of that new 1D song couldn't sound any more like the beginning of @newfoundglory's "its not your fault" but," she posted on Twitter, alongside a picture of the Kermit sipping tea meme. Chad Gilbert of New Found Glory also echoed the sentiment, though later ended up retracting his claims amid furore from Directioners. He claimed he was only making a joke about the similarities and that “Music influences music”. Right, and Twitter hate influences a lot of backpeddling!
1 Zayn Malik
Now that he’s out of the group, Zayn clearly has no love lost for his former brothers in arms. “That’s not music that I would listen to,” he said recently in an interview. “Would you listen to One Direction, sat at a party with your girl? I wouldn’t. To me, that’s not an insult, that’s me as a 22-year-old man. As much as I was in that band, and I loved everything that we did, that’s not music that I would listen to.” This is just the latest in a line of spats he’s had with his old bandmates, including Twitter arguments and public statements about just how awful a time he had while being a member of one of the world’s most successful boybands.
