10 Actors You Didn’t Know Could Sing

Discovering hidden talents of people we know is always a treat. But finding out our favorite actors have awesome skills outside their acting abilities can sometimes be mind-blowing, especially when we see them in action.

There are actors who prefer to be known solely for their acting capabilities and keep their other talents hidden away. They probably just want to focus on one genre and hone that talent, rather than become a jack-of-all-trades, but master of none. However sometimes, certain roles require the actors to step out of their comfort zones and do the other stuff that they keep locked away from the world. We sometimes see them in a new role, living it up on the dance floor or playing an instrument or singing their hearts out and we say, who knew they could do that?!

There are actors who, to our surprised delight, can actually sing like pros. We’ve already seen the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow in Duets, Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge, Meryl Streep in Mamma Mia, and Hugh Jackman in Les Miserables belting it out. But what about other actors who may have done a bit of singing in their roles, but only really demonstrated their prowess live, in impromptu interviews or home-made videos? These actors have some astoundingly amazing vocal chords!

10 Kristen Bell

She’s best known as Veronica Mars on the titular hit TV series of the same name, and has gone on to make films such as When In Rome, Couples Retreat, and Burlesque. But it wasn’t until Kristin Bell voiced the character of Princess Anna in the most successful animated film of all time, Frozen, that she came into prominence as a professional singer. She wowed the public with her sweet singing voice as Anna, singing For the First Time in Forever and Do You Want to Build a Snowman, for which she did an amazing job singing in a child-like voice.

9 Ryan Gosling

We almost forgot that Canadian hunk Ryan Gosling was once a part of the Mickey Mouse Club. And that pretty much explains why he can sing, which was a requirement prior to membership of the famous kiddie group. He did a little bit of singing for his role in the moderately successful film, Blue Valentine, but it’s in his other public appearances where he really shows his singing chops. Who knew he could rock it out, band-style?

8 Emilia Clarke

British actress Emilia Clarke is one of Hollywood’s up-and-coming, being best known for her role as Daenerys Targaryen in the wildly popular HBO TV series, Game of Thrones. Aside from several movies lined up in the next couple of years, Clarke just recently made her Broadway debut as Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the film made popular by the legendary Audrey Hepburn. In the play, Clarke showed off her vocal chords and skills on the guitar, surely making men fall in love with her all the more!

7 Terrence Howard

Aside from his Academy Award nomination for his role in Hustle and Flow, Terrence Howard is also known as the dude who played Rhodes in Iron Man, but refused to appear in the sequels because he didn’t appreciate having to take a huge pay cut to compensate for Robert Downey, Jr.’s salary increase. But he pushed on with his acting career and unknown to many, he also has a singing career. He released his first album, which he described as “urban country,” in 2008.

6 Robert Downey, Jr.

Before his career rebirth when he took on the role of Iron Man, Robert Downey, Jr. had done a bit of singing in the soundtracks of his box-office flop films such as Chaplin, Too Much Sun, and The Singing Detective. But we only really saw him in action as a good singer in the TV show, Ally McBeal, where he performed the song, River on the show; and years later on a video of a Sting concert, where he performed Every Breath You Take with the singing legend. Yes, Downey, Jr. certainly has a swoon-worthy baritone!

5 Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Joseph Gordon-Levitt has come a long way from his days as scrawny and awkward adolescent, Tommy Solomon in the hit TV sitcom, 3rd Rock From The Sun. He has since transitioned to serious, adult roles in films like G.I Joe: The Rise of Cobra and Inception. Though he’s never appeared in a musical film, the guy can actually sing. He’s done a couple of voice recordings and even sang live onstage as a solo act and another time with Anne Hathaway.

4 Jeremy Renner

He’s more known as a serious actor, with roles like Hawkeye in the Marvel franchise, The Avengers and Carmino Polito in the critically-acclaimed film, American Hustle, but if one reads Jeremy Renner’s credentials, he’s actually listed as an actor, singer, and songwriter. In fact, he’s an all-around musician, as he can also play the guitar, keyboard, and drums. He performed one of his compositions on keyboard in the TV talk show, The View, where he wowed the show’s hosts and audience with his beautiful singing voice.

3 Kevin Bacon

He’s one of Hollywood’s A-list actors, starring in such hits as A Few Good Men, Apollo 13, and Mystic River. But aside from being an actor, he’s also a producer, politician, the subject of trivia game, Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, and a musician. Bacon formed a band with his brother, Michael and the singing group is aptly entitled, The Bacon Brothers. With him as the lead singer, the band has released six albums to-date.

2 Kerry Washington

Though she has appeared in a number of high-profile movies, such as Ray, The Last King of Scotland, Fantastic Four, and Django Unchained, Kerry Washington is best known for her role as crisis management expert, Olivia Pope in the hit TV drama, Scandal. But few people know that Washington can sing and sing well. She has said in interviews that she was part of an a cappella singing group in high school and she has displayed her lovely voice in some impromptu singing challenges during some of her interviews.

1 Scarlett Johansson

She just recently had a baby, which she probably considers one of her greatest achievements, but Scarlett Johansson has been accomplished in other fields aside from bearing her first child. Though she is best known for her movie roles in Match Point, The Prestige, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, and as Black Widow in The Avengers film franchise, Johansson also happens to be a musician. She has done covers of several popular songs. Her albums have generated mixed reviews, with some saying her singing is bland, while others have praised her style, saying her vocal prowess is “surprisingly alluring.”
