This may come as a surprise to some, but according to Facebook data, the cold and dreary winter months are a prime season for breakups. Instead of cuddling by the fireplace, many couples—celebrities included—are calling it quits. Whether they’re on the mend or done for good, let’s take a look back at the celebrity couples who just couldn’t keep that flame alive during this year’s spread of the contagious anti-love bug.
11) Hilary Duff and Mike Comrie
, were splitting up after more than three years of marriage. The couple first wed in 2010 and had their first and only child, Luca, two years later in 2012. They released a joint statement to confirm the news and request privacy. “Hilary Duff and husband Mike Comrie have mutually decided to an amicable separation. They remain best friends and will continue to be in each other’s lives. They are dedicated to loving and parenting their amazing son, and ask for privacy at this time.”
Duff may not have to look far for another man though. On March 5, Aaron Carter, Duff’s former boyfriend who left her in 2000 for fellow Disney star, Lindsay Lohan, took to twitter to vent about losing the Lizzie Mcguire star. “I’ll spend the rest of my life trying to better myself to get back to her. I don’t care what ANY of you think,” he wrote on March 5. Nothing says romance like a tweet, right Aaron?
10) Robin Thicke and Paula Patton
Only a month after they appeared on the red carpet together for the 2014 Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, the couple sadly announced they were ending their nine-year marriage. The high school sweethearts, who first met in 1993, released a joint statement saying, “We will always love each other and be best friends. However, we have mutually decided to separate at this time.” The pair has one child together, three-year-old Julian.
Reports claimed that their marriage began crumbling following Thicke’s performance at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards where he performed “Blurred Lines,” alongside Miley Cyrus, 21, who ‘twerked’ on him. Other evidence of their troubling marriage surfaced when Thicke was photographed dirty dancing with a fan in Paris. Despite this betrayal, Patton has remained supportive of Thicke’s career, which reached a peak following the success of his hit song, “Blurred Lines” reaching the top spot on the Billboard’s Hot 100. She even encouraged him to pose on the cover of Treats! magazine with five naked models.
While they may be in the Thicke of their marriage woes, during a recent Washington concert, the 36-year-old sent a public plea for Patton to reconsider the divorce. He even devoted his song, “Lost Without U” to her, and told the audience that he plans on getting her back. “For y’all that don’t know, my wife and I got separated a few days ago, but I’m trying to get my girl back.”
9) Kelly Osbourne and Matthew Mosshart
The rocker-esque couple, who first became engaged on Jan. 1, 2013 during a vacation in Anguilla, called off their engagement only a year later in early 2014. Mosshart, a vegan chef, first met Osbourne at Kate Moss’ 2011 summer wedding. Shortly afterwards, they went public with their love. The E! Fashion Police correspondent told Hello magazine that she has “never felt this close to another human being, ever.”
Osbourne’s spokesperson confirmed the recent split, saying that it was amicable, “and the pair continue to have nothing but the utmost respect for one another.”
8) Emma Watson and Will Adamowicz
If only Emma Watson could use magic to find love. Hearts were broken around the world (and on Hogwarts campuses) when Watson and fellow Oxford university student, Will Adamowicz, went public after being photographed kissing during the 2012 Coachella Music Festival in California. Although it was confirmed in early January that they were no longer dating, a spokesperson for the star revealed that the couple actually ended their relationship in the summer of 2012 and were no longer on speaking terms. Watson is now dating Oxford rugby player, Matt Janney.
7) Ricki Martin and Carlos Gonzalez Abella
Latin pop singer, Ricky Martin is now single and ready to livin’ la vida loca. On January 2, a rep for the couple confirmed that Martin and longtime boyfriend, Carlos Gonzalez Abella had ended their five-year relationship. Martin, however, may have been hinting to the breakup before it was even announced when he tweeted “Changes oh changes” on December 27.
A spokesperson for the couple released a joint statement that “Ricky and Carlos have mutually agreed to end their relationship, but continue to be united by friendship and their shared experiences.”
6) Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom
From rumors about infidelity and drug addictions, the divorce between Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom was a long time coming. Their four-year marriage finally came to a halt when Kardashian filed for divorce on Dec. 13, 2013. The pair wed in September 2009 after knowing each other for only a few weeks. The wedding aired during a Season four episode of the family’s popular reality show, “Keeping Up With The Kardashians.”
More recently, during the ninth season of the show, viewers have been getting an inside-look into the pair’s rocky relationship. In one episode, she stays with family members in order to avoid having to sleep in the home that the couples shares. In a sneak peak for the March 9 episode, Khloe break down to her sister, Kim, over ending the relationship for good with Odom.
5) Katy Perry and John Mayer
The on and off again couple are reportedly off, and for good this time. The news came after reports claimed that Mayer was planning to propose to the “Dark Horse” star. The pair began dating eight months after her divorce with actor and comedian, Russell Brand. They split up on December 30 in 2011 due to “irreconcilable differences.” Perry later revealed that the divorce was “too intense” and the relationship ended because she wasn’t ready to have kids.
The latest breakup between Perry and Mayer was reportedly caused by Mayer kissing his spinning instructor, Lauren McHale. An insider revealed that they met in May 2013 at a Los Angeles bar, went back to her house to have a few drinks, and ended up kissing. “It was very innocent,” the insider revealed, “they didn’t sleep together.”
Mayer, who has previously been linked to Jessica Simpson, Jennifer Aniston and Taylor Swift, was spotted getting cozy with a brunette during an Oscars Pre-Party on March 1. Perry, on the other hand, handled the breakup in a different approach by locking lips with none other than Miley Cyrus.
4) Heidi Klum and Martin Kristen
Although their romance is similar to a real-life version of the movie, “The Bodyguard,” the ending, unfortunately, isn’t your typical storybook. Heidi Klum and her bodyguard-turned-boyfriend, Martin Kristen, instead, recently called it quits after 18 months of dating. A friend close to the model told PEOPLE Magazine that Kristen was “incredibly supportive” when Klum was dealing with the divorce of her seven-year marriage to British singer, Seal. “Martin was there for her during a challenging time in her life and it was something she will always be grateful for.”
In order to avoid the awkward ‘working with the ex’ situation, they also decided to end their professional relationship. The last sighting of the couple together was an Instagram picture of them wearing wigs on New Year’s Eve.
3) Marc Anthony and Chloe Green
The Latin singer who, let’s be honest, is better known as the ex-husband of Jennifer Lopez, is on the market again after splitting up with 22-year-old Topshop heiress, Chloe Green. The couple dated for one year, but often took breaks from their relationship. This split, however, seems to be concrete due to their “busy schedules.” The 45-year-old singer is currently on a world tour for his new album, 3.0 while Green is said to be busy working on creating a shoe line for Topshop.
2) Harry Styles and Kendall Jenner
Ah, young love. Or… not. The two young Hollywood stars who reportedly dated for three months, recently called it quits. The 18-year-old model and member of the Kardashian clan, is said to be “heartbroken” over the breakup that was reportedly initiated due to the One Direction singer’s busy schedule.
Jenner may be sad now, but her growing modeling career should keep her mind occupied. In the past month, she’s expanded her portfolio by walking in major fashion shows for Chanel, Marc Jacobs and Givenchy. Styles, too, is busy preparing for One Direction’s fourth album and their upcoming stadium tour. Either way, they’re young, rich and gorgeous—in other words, they’ll find someone someday.
1) Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin
Gwyneth Paltrow and Coldplay singer, Chris Martin were the split that no one saw coming. On March 26, Paltrow took to her website, Goop, to announce the news in a statement that read, “It is with hearts full of sadness that we have decided to separate. We have been working hard for well over a year, some of it together, some of it separated, to see what might have been possible between us, and we have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much, we will remain separate.” They’ve deemed their separation as “conscious uncoupling,” which relates to the logic that couples shouldn’t be tied down to one another for life. Instead, their separation is rooted in the fact that couples should commit to their relationship in daily renewals, rather than a lifetime commitment. The couple have been married for more than a decade and have two children together, Apple and Moses.
