Cosmetic surgery has been around for decades and even with a recession, plastic surgery has remained a very strong industry with $11 billion in revenues in 2012 alone. This statistic has surprised many industry experts and observers but it remains apparent that plastic surgery can be considered by some people as a necessity. Most people can admit they have pondered at one time about having some type of cosmetic procedure done.

Plastic surgery is more popular now than ever before. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, there were a total of 10 million procedures done in 2012, 17% of which were surgical. As more non-invasive procedures are developed, it is expected that the number of surgical procedures performed per year will continue to decrease.

For some people, cosmetic surgery has become an addiction. You’ll be now hard pressed to find someone who’s only had one surgery and has no plans of having more work done on their faces or bodies in the future. Reasons for having plastic surgery done are as vast and complex as the personalities of the people who go under the knife – some want to look like their celebrity idols while others do it to address insecurities with their physical appearances.

Despite the risks that cosmetic surgery poses, thousands of men and women all over the world believe that the benefits outweigh these risks and go for the surgeries anyway. Thankfully, there are now higher standards for cosmetic procedures and plastic surgery is safer now more than ever before. It’s still advisable for people thinking about getting a procedure done to only use reputable, licensed doctors.
