The NBA has given us some of the most amazing athletes in the world. While it has been around since the 1950s, it really exploded in the 1980s when stars like Magic Johnson and Larry Bird came in at the same time to highlight an unselfish kind of basketball that was just a sight to behold. Johnson highlighted the Showtime era in which his Los Angeles Lakers won five titles in the decade.
After that, the stars just kept on coming. Well, Julius Erving actually came before the two, but he also served as a basketball ambassador during those days. Then came Michael Jordan, probably the best player to ever lace up a pair of basketball shoes. Kobe Bryant came a decade later and LeBron James now rule the basketball world.
And fans just love these great players. Even well known celebrities get regularly caught up in basketball games. Stars like Jack Nicholson, Denzel Washington, Spike Lee, Jay-Z, members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, etc have also been known to enjoy a game or two.
But the players are not just the ones we enjoy watching. Someone has to lead the cheering, to keep the spirit up when the team is down and to sustain the noise when the team is ahead. Those tasks fall in the hands of the cheerleaders. They are a welcome break from the frenetic pace and action of the ballgame.
Here now is a list of the 10 sexiest cheerleaders in the NBA.
10. San Antonio Spurs
One wonders how the Spurs have kept up with the younger teams despite the fact that three veteran players headline the team. Sure, Tony Parker is not that old compared to Manu Ginobili and Tim Duncan, but still, all that wear and tear should be catching up with all of them. Different teams have come and gone, but the team has perennially remained a contender. There must be something about Texas, or maybe its women, specifically its cheerleaders. Those young cheerleaders are the perfect antidote to the aging players.
9. Dallas Mavericks
Just two years remove from an NBA championship and the Mavs suddenly find itself struggling to just make the playoffs. The departure of main cogs like Tyson Chandler and Jason Kidd certainly hurt its chances. Dirk Nowitzki’s injury is not helping the team’s cause as well. Good thing they have the team’s cheerleaders to brighten their days up. It’s not hard to imagine a great cheering squad from Dallas, with the city being the home of the Cowboys as well.
8. Golden State Warriors
For the longest time, the Warriors have experienced a roller coaster ride. A championship in the 70s followed by some bad seasons. It was rejuvenated with the Run TMC crew of Hardaway, Richmond and Mullin. It strengthened a bit further with Chris Webber and Latrell Sprewell, only to collapse in the mid 90s. A few years ago, Baron Davis and Stephan Jackson led the team to a surprise win over the heavily favored Mavs. Then, that team got broken up. This year, it is back in contention with a young team led by Stephen Curry. Warrior cheerleaders are ready to lead one of the noisiest crowds in the playoffs again.
7. New York Knicks
It is hard to please a New York crowd that always demands success. And with several teams in all the major sports, Knicks cheerleaders are used to the rowdy, even rude, New York audience. But even with the arrival of the Brooklyn Nets, nothing beats Knicks basketball, if only for its cheerleaders.
6. Boston Celtics
Another city spoiled by success. With recent championships in all the major sports, plus the 17 banners of the beloved Celtics, the Boston crowd knows its sports. And its cheerleaders have a hand in leading some of the most knowledgeable fans in the sport. With the famed Celtic Pride, they will always have a chance despite the injury to Rajon Rondo.
5. Chicago Bulls
Six titles and the opportunity to witness Michael Jordan up close are enough reasons for Chicago citizens to intently follow the Bulls, Yet, there is actually one more. Those Bulls cheerleaders certainly are no bull when it comes to beauty and sexiness.
4. Houston Rockets
The Rockets always have this special ability to sneak in just as everybody else is looking at something else. In the 1980s, when everyone’s attention was focused on the Lakers, Celtics and Sixers, the Rockets crashed the party twice in 1981 and 1986 before losing out to the Celtics. When Jordan first retired in the mid 90s, it was the Rockets who took advantage and won two titles in the two seasons when Jordan was at least partially out. This year, the team is in playoff contention because of the heady plays of Jeremy Lin, the scoring of James Harden and the support of its cheerleaders.
3. Atlanta Hawks
Even with the departure of the team’s all-star Joe Johnson, the Hawks are perfectly placed to make a run in the playoffs. And with the team’s hot cheerleaders, Hotlanta hopes to make an impact after the regular season. Well, maybe as much impact as the Miami Heat would allow any opponent.
2. Los Angeles Lakers
It has been a crazy season for the Lakers. Last year’s coach tried to introduce a new system. Two top players joined the team. Before the team could even learn the new system, a coaching change was made and with it, a new system was placed once again. Injuries have ravaged its players, including its stars. And just as they were finally settling in, Kobe Bryant gets injured. Oh, and the team’s owner also passed away. The only thing constant is the perkiness of the Lakers Girls.
1. Miami Heat
With such a dominant team, one does not need to do much to get the crowd going. So does that mean the Heat can do away with its cheerleaders? Certainly not! The cheerleaders can help whip the crowd up into frenzy during the few times that the team is actually in trouble. Plus, LeBron James and Dwayne Wade may get bored doing those alley-oop dunks if they don’t see those sexy cheerleaders near the courtside.
