The 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards were again a luxurious affair with celebrities pulling out all stops to make sure their makeup and hair was red-carpet ready. The awards, held last Sunday in Beverly Hills, were televised in more than 160 locations around the world and are among the top three most watched awards shows each year. With that kind of attention, it’s no wonder that celebs invest hundreds of dollars – if not thousands – into their beauty products.
With the Golden Globes now wrapped up for another year, beauty fanatics all around the world are rushing to examine the hair and makeup styles their favorite celebrities pulled off. The good, the bad, the ugly – it’s all catching the attention of the masses. Whether you’re after perfect smoky eyes, pretty girly curls, statement red lips or something else, chances are someone rocked that exact look at the Golden Globes and now you can steal their style.
The big question on the minds of beauty enthusiasts is which products did the celebrities, or their personal stylists, use to create their red carpet look this year. Luckily, stars don’t seem to mind sharing a few tips with their beloved fans, even if the products their stylists use sometimes amount to over $100 each. Check out our list of the top 10 hair and makeup styles that we saw displayed on the red carpet in the 2014 Golden Globes, and find out how much it’ll cost you to recreate the look.
10. Dramatic Beauty – Wine Stained Lips
Coming in at number 10 on our list is wine-stained lips. This trend became big in fall, after Gucci and other runway shows featured the look. The key to the look is keeping the rest of your makeup neutral and let the lips do the talking – and Jennifer Lawrence did exactly that at the Golden Globes. She wore a dark, shimmery, mulberry lip color, coupled with a silver eye color, black-lined eyelids – and, of course, her new pixie haircut. She chose Rouge Dior Lipstick in Prune Daisy and Dior’s 5 Colors Eye Shadow in Gris-Gris, costing a total of $100 or more. Other celebs that have pulled off this bold look in recent months include Kate Bosworth and Camilla Belle.
9. Radiance – Gold Eyes, Red Lips
Mexican-born Lupita Nyong’o, who starred in 12 Years A Slave, was another top pick for best Golden Globe beauty looks. Her makeup artist, Nick Barose, made her skin glow with radiance by using Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sheer Colour SPF 15, which costs approximately $70. For her eyes, he brightened her look up even more and used Chanel’s Le Crayon Yeux Precision Eye Definer, in Blue Jean (with a price of $35), as well as the Ombre Essentielle Soft Touch Eyeshadow in Complice, costing $40. To finish the look, her lips were covered with Rouge Allure Luminous Intense Lip Colour in Pirate (costing $40).
8. Old Hollywood – Retro Curls, Red Lips
With her curly hair, side part and shiny red lips, singer Taylor Swift again pulled of a classic, old Hollywood look which is becoming her signature look. She hasn’t yet said what lip color she was wearing, but it’s well known in the beauty industry that one of her favorite glossy lip stains is Make Up Forever’s Aqua Rouge No. 8 (costing about $30). Taylor’s fashion stylist is Joseph Cassell, who consistently ranks among the top celeb stylists. She also has Lorrie Turk as her makeup stylist and Jemma Muradian takes responsibility for her hairstyling.
7. Sparkling Beauty – Sequins, Silver
Kate Beckinsale wore a gunmetal colored gown by Zuhair Murad, a celeb designer who’s dressed the likes of Jennifer Lopez and Taylor Swift in recent years. To match the silvery dress, which was completely covered in sequins, her makeup artist covered her lids with Jouer Powder Eyeshadow in Chocolat and then added Jouer Powder Eyeshadow in Opal to highlight the inner eye corners. Finally, he defined her eyes with Jouer Eye Definer in Noir and Jouer Powder Eyeshadow in Licorice. All up, those four eye products cost about $100 or more. Even her hair shone bright, with extra Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray added to her twist hairstyle, which retails for about $20.
6. Feminine Style – Loose Waves
Plenty of famous ladies walked down the red carpet this year with loose curls or waves. Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke had her Dove hairstylist, Mark Townsend, create her soft waves by wrapping roughly three-inch sections of hair around a curling iron. Other actresses to rock this look included mother-to-be Olivia Wilde, Sofia Vergara and Tina Fey. Sofia Vergara’s hairstylist, Harry Josh, was quoted as saying that he aimed for a simple, chic look. He says “waves have ruled the red carpet for so long” and that he used that idea coupled with a luxurious twist. He used the Harry John Pro Tools Pro Dryer to create the style, which sells for $300. The dryer has built-in ion technology which adds a satin-like shine to her hair.
5. Flawless and Fresh – All Natural Colors
Sitting at number five on our list, is the flawless and fresh-faced looked. Naomi Watts was channeling natural beauty at the Globes this year, with the help of makeup artist Pati Dubroff. He used a Giorgio Armani foundation ($62) and a Lancome face powder ($38.50) as the base for her face. To give her cheeks a natural colour, he added Lancome Blush Subtil Palette, in Shimmer Menage a Trois Kiss ($42). Her peach and beige lips were achieved with Lancome Rouge in Love, in Lasting Kiss ($28.50), and her eyeshadow was a Pati Dubroff special in Golden Leaf and Oleander ($22). The Wolf of Wall Street actress Margot Robbie also turned up looking natural and fresh faced.
4. Bronzed Goddess – Braids, Bronzer
Award-winning actress Amy Adams turned up sporting a braided updo, which was designed by her hairstylist Laini Reeves. Amy’s long red hair was sectioned into four separate pieces, braided, and then pulled along with the rest of her hair into a high bun. Braids have long been a summery look and match perfectly with a bronzed face. For her bronze eyes, she wore Laura Mercier Baked Eye Colour in Terracotta (costing $30) as well as a violet colored liner. On her lips, she wore Laura Mercier Creme Lip Colour in Tangerine and also in Discretion, which cost about $30 each. Reese Witherspoon also opted for bronze eyeshadow, making her bright blue eyes stand out.
3. Classic Glamour – Red Lip, Faux Lashes
New Girl lead actress Zooey Deschanel hit the red carpet in style, effortlessly pulling off a classic, glamorous look. She wore classic red lipstick by Tarte, available at Sephora. The LipSurgence matte lipstick color was Fiery. It retails for approximately $30 and is marketed as long-lasting. Zooey also rocked classic, lush eyelashes with lots of black mascara. She hasn’t told fans which mascara she uses but we know that Le Volume de Chanel mascara creates the exact same effect of volume plus striking black color for a cost of $35. Zooey’s hair was styled by Pantene stylist, Shelley Brien, in a side twist and bangs. To top the look off, she selected a custom-made, Jennifer Behr silk flower comb. Jennifer Behr is a luxury hair accessory designer whose pieces (worth $180+) have been featured in famous fashion magazines such as Vogue, Marie Claire, and Cosmopolitan. Zooey also rocked a quirky daisy manicure thanks to celebrity manicurist Tom Bachik (of L’Oreal).
2. Cheerful Beauty – Pink Lips
Harry Potter star Emma Watson may not have chosen the best dress for the Golden Globes (her look was particularly polarizing and received very mixed reviews). However, her hair and makeup were applauded. She opted for a pink, cheerful lip color and a low, loose bun. The punchy lips were courtesy of Chanel’s Rouge Allure Luminous Intense Lip Color in Exaltée and Coromandel, with a price of $40. To hold her bun in place and keep it looking smooth, stylist Shelley Brien used Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Flexible Hold Hairspray. Cate Blanchett also opted to be pretty in pink rather than stepping out with her usual red lips. She used both Giorgio Armani Rouge Ecstasy Lipstick in Boudoir and Scarlatto, with a combined cost of about $80. Sandra Bullock was also spotted with pretty pink lips, matching her pink gown.
1. Sultry Elegance – Smoky Eyes
No one pulled off sultry, smoky eyes as well as Mila Kunis at this year’s Golden Globes. Her sultry look was thanks to makeup artist Tracey Levy. She used the Lancome Color Design Infinite 24HR in Timeless Taupe on the lids ($25). She also added some Lancome Le Crayon Khol Pencil in Gris Noir ($29), and Lancome Artliner in Noir ($37). Combined with her slick ballerina bun, Mila was elegant in the true sense of the word. Olivia Wilde also hit the red carpet with smoky eyes but with a purple tinge. Her makeup artist Melanie Inglessis combined the smokey eye technique with the cat eye technique. She used Revlon Photoready Kajal Eye Liner in Purple Reign (costing only about $10) and then topped it off with Revlon Photoready Primer + Shadow palette in Muse. To offset the dark eyes, Olivia wore Super Lustrous Lipgloss in Super Natural and Revlon Ultimate Suede in Private Viewing on her lips.
