We all have a tendency to jump to conclusions about people based on their personal style, but we'd do well to remember the old adage about books and their covers. We're all extremely diverse people, with interests spanning across many different genres - and this is also true of celebrities. Aside from the glitz and glam of the celebrity lifestyle, many celebrities have unexpected, often strange, interests and talents that they pursue during their down time.
Take Matthew Morrison for example. Morrison's father is a midwife, and Matthew helped him out on a number of occasions before becoming famous. Colin Farrell is an avid line dancing enthusiast and even qualified as a line dancing instructor. David Arquette, despite his action-packed filmography, has an interest in knitting. Many famous actors and actresses also hide musical talents. For example, Eva Longoria, star of Desperate Housewives, is a talented clarinet player. Bruce Willis plays the harmonica!
The most frequent misconceptions are often around the gentler sex, given the often two-dimensional way beautiful women are presented in the media. It seems that many people expect that female celebrities and models simply hang around being beautiful or advertising hair products. When they're not doing so, they're usually spotted holidaying in the sun. However, many high profile female celebrities have expressed a range of exciting and rather unexpected interests. From being computer whizzes to collecting weapons, here are the 6 fashionable women who aren't afraid to get a bit nerdy about their niche interests.
6 Frida Gustavsson - Gaming
Frida Gustavsson is one of the most renowned models in the world today. Frida hails from Stockholm in Sweden, and was spotted by a model scout in Ikea aged just fourteen years old. Since then, Frida has seen a huge amount of success. After flying to Japan for a modelling gig at sixteen, Frida was signed by numerous major fashion houses. She is currently signed by IMG NY, IMG Paris, IMG Milan, IMG London, IMG Australia, 2pm Model Management and Mega Model Agency.... to name but a few! Frida has been a hit in the modelling world, both on the runway and in print. Gustavsson has walked on the runways of basically every high profile fashion house on the planet, including Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Givenchy, Dolce & Gabbana, Yves Saint Laurent, Versace, Alexander McQueen and Jean Paul Gaultier and has modelled for Victoria's Secret.
With so much fashion in her life, you would kind of expect Frida to be a bit of a girly-girl, but you'd be wrong. Frida is, in fact, an enthusiastic gamer. In various interviews, Frida has stated that the thing she looks forward to most after the end of fashion week is getting into her pyjamas and playing World of Warcraft.
5 Taylor Swift - Making Snowglobes
Taylor Swift is the ultimate girly-girl: she is always impeccably dressed, well styled and spends her days writing love songs (or, to be more accurate, break-up songs). Taylor's romance-themed songwriting has earned her millions - quite a few. Currently, the striking blonde's net worth is about $150 million dollars. The self-made star began her career as a musician in Nashville, Tennessee. After many years of networking, Taylor was offered an artist development contract with RCA Records. During this time, Swift spend years developing her songwriting skills that would later make her famous. Her first album was eventually released in 2006, which made waves in the world of country music. Recently, Swift has developed a more pop-focused style, and this has brought her universal success.
Taylor's interests outside of music are soberingly sweet. Swift has proclaimed her love of making snow globes on Facebook, and posted a picture of her creations on Facebook with the words “Home made snow globes with friends. The whole fleet!" Swift also enjoys cookery. Taylor sent Ed Sheeran some of her homemade jam, with a label that poked fun at how Kanye West humiliated her at the VMA awards. The label, which Ed Sheeran posted on Instagram, read "Yo Ed - I'm really happy for you and I'm gonna let u finish but this is the best JAM OF ALL TIME - T". Pretty punny.
4 Cameron Diaz- Snowboarding
Cameron Diaz has made her name as a comedy actress, and has starred in some of the standout films of the 1990s - The Mask, There's Something About Mary and My Best Friend's Wedding to name but a few. Diaz achieved worldwide fame for later high-profile roles in the films Charlie's Angels, Vanilla Sky, Gangs of New York and for voicing the formidable Princess Fiona in the animated trilogy Shrek. However, Diaz's girl-next-door image is just an act.
In real life, Diaz is a bit of a tomboy, crazy about outdoor sports. Diaz is known for being incredibly healthy and active and when she isn't working, she can be spotted exercising in some way. Diaz's main love is snowboarding. She's an avid fan of the sport and refuses to quit despite the fact that her interest has left her seriously injured in the past - once she required surgery on her nose after an accident. Diaz also loves water sports such as surfing and kayaking.
3 Angelina Jolie - Dagger Collecting
Angelina Jolie is one of the most successful women in the film industry. With a direct route into the film business from an early age (her father is renowned actor Jon Voight), she landed her first role in Lookin' To Get Out with her father. However, Jolie's career really took off after after the release of Lara Croft: Tomb Raider in 2001. The role brought Jolie universal success, and years later, she is now one of the most established actresses in Hollywood. She has starred in several major films such as Girl, Interrupted, Salt, A Mighty Heart and Changeling.
Jolie has a reputation for being a little bit nuts, though. In the 1990s, before her romance with Brad Pitt, Jolie was married to Billy Bob Thornton and the couple used to wear vials filled with one another's blood around their necks. Jolie also has a passion for collecting daggers. Her mother presented her with her first dagger when she was a teenager, and since then Jolie has loved collecting them. She even showed off her butterfly knife skills during an interview with Conan O' Brien.
2 Cara Delevingne - Drumming
Cara Delevigne is, according to many, the next Kate Moss. After a pampered upbringing in one of the most exclusive parts of London, Delevingne began focusing on a career as a model. Delevigne found success quickly, and is currently signed with Storm, Women, Elite and Scoop Model Management. Her slender physique and perfect facial features mean that she quickly became in high demand. Last year, after shooting numerous campaigns with Burberry, Chanel and DKNY (as well as becoming a Victoria's Secret model), Cara was catapulted to worldwide stardom. Her constant social media presence means that she is the true queen of Generation Y, with her legions of loyal fans following her updates around the clock.
Aside from modelling, Cara has a keen interest in drumming. She has been working on her drumming skills for a number of years, and recently the starlet was asked to drum at an official music performance, with a live orchestra, at the prestigious British Fashion Awards. Cara's talent may come in handy, as the young model seems keen to launch a music career.
1 Lyndsey Scott - Computer Coding
Lyndsey Scott is an incredibly successful model. The stunning 29-year-old has lucrative contracts with incredible designers, such as Victoria's Secret and Calvin Klein. Scott was bullied in school before achieving success though; ironically, for the features that would bring her fame as a model. She described her torment in a recent interview with The Telegraph UK - "They called me a monster. I was maybe 80 lb and 5ft 8in. For the first three years I was the only black person. By the end I was terribly quiet. I could barely talk to people without tearing up." After graduating from Amherst with a degree in Theatre and Computer Science, Scott took up modelling. Her parents however, wanted her to pursue her programming skills.
Thats right - Scott is remarkably talented at computer programming. Scott loves tinkering away on computers, and has big plans for her future in the field of technology. Scott has shown true business acumen throughout her career - the money she earns from modelling is currently forming the foundations of her career as a developer. Scott has already designed two apps! She thus tops our list of beautiful women with a nerdy side, as she embodies the notion that you should never judge a book by its cover.
