In Hollywood, looks often threaten to become paramount while talent takes a backseat. As a result, plastic surgery is a going concern in the industry, since so many people in the spotlight chose to undergo procedures to enhance their looks. With so many new, advanced and subtle procedures, apparent youth and perfection are only a cut – and several thousand dollars – away. According to the 2013 Plastic Surgery Statistics Report, 15 million cosmetic surgery procedures - including both the minimally invasive and the surgical - were performed last year in the United States alone. Among those were over 6 million Botox injections, 290,000 breast augmentation surgeries, and 221,000 nose jobs. And this is no cheap investment: According to the same report, $12.6 billion was spent on cosmetic procedures in the U.S. in 2013 - up a full 15% from 2012.
Despite the apparent popularity of reconstructive and enhancing surgeries, it's not at all uncommon to hear horror stories about botched procedures and see evidence of even the richest celebrities fall victim to disastrous surgical enhancements. Meanwhile, there are a few celebrities out there whose appearance suggests that less is more when it comes to corrective surgery.
Undoubtedly, plastic surgery can serve to enhance self-esteem in a meaningful way and many believe it's nobody's right to criticise another person’s choices when it comes to aesthetic preferences - even if that means going under the knife. Still, the following five naturally beautiful actresses have chosen to be very open about their mistrust of plastic surgery. They typically state the restriction of movement as a central concern; understandably, given that their craft involves displaying a range of emotion and even the most non-invasive procedure can conflict with acting’s central tool, the face. The following five Hollywood darlings have gone against the grain in choosing to skip the surgery and embrace aging and imperfections with grace - at least for the time being.
5 Julia Roberts - 46 Years Old
Julia Roberts is one of the most famous and accomplished actresses out there. As a result, she's no stranger to the sometimes harsh spotlight under which the media places the most famous faces. Yet, Roberts claims to have never undergone plastic surgery, not even on that perfect face. Roberts explained this choice in an interview with Elle magazine, saying, “your face tells a story and it shouldn't be a story about your drive to the doctor’s office.” Despite her beliefs, the media has still hypothesized that Roberts did, in fact, go under the knife. One tabloid states, “having such an appearance at her age is questionable.” But these are merely rumors. Though perhaps we'll never know for sure, Roberts does look almost unbelievably great at age 42. In 2010 she partnered with the beauty line, Lancome, and appeared looking gorgeous in a number of high profile advertisements. “It’s unfortunate that we live in such a panicked, dysmorphic society,” she says. “I want to have some idea of what I'll look like before I start cleaning the slates.”
4 Kate Winslet - 38 Years Old
Not only has Kate Winslet declined plastic surgery, but she has also formed the “British Anti-Cosmetic Surgery League” with her friends and fellow enlistees Emma Thompson and Rachel Weisz. She has been quoted telling Harper’s Bazaar in 2009, “I’d rather be the woman they're saying ‘She’s looking older’ about than ‘She’s looking stoned.’” Winslet has also been vocal in the past about eliminating the retouching done in post-production on her photo shoots. “I will never give in.” Winslet has proudly told the Telegraph, with regard to getting plastic surgery. “I am an actress, I don't want to freeze the expression of my face.”
3 Meryl Streep - 64 Years Old
Meryl Streep is known for her exceptional body of work and her natural beauty. In an interview at Indiana University, Streep expressed her negative feelings about Botox, discussing the botoxed look of “non-movement…[and that] something isn’t quite right.” Indeed, Streep has become well known for speaking out against plastic surgery. In 2008 she was quoted as saying, “I think you have to embrace getting older and celebrate life.” She has also been known to criticise of some of her peers who have undergone surgery to look younger. Despite this public stance, Meryl still faces rumors about her apparent plastic surgery. (Though, of course, these rumors include the disclaimer that the alleged surgery was done very subtly.) These occasional accusations are, at the very least, a testament to how good she looks at 64!
2 Tina Fey - 44 Years Old
Comedy Queen Tina Fey has also done her best to avoid plastic surgery. She states humorously, “your choices are: get old, or look creepy.” Though she has expressed that “the years of sleep deprivation are going to catch up with me,” she ultimately says that she has no interest in going under the knife and hopes she never has to. Fey has done interviews revealing her beauty secrets and always looks striking at award shows; admirably, though, she always maintains a healthy sense of humor when talking about her own looks. She said in an interview with InStyle, “I’m just going to keep using firming creams and try to bring back hats with chin straps.”
1 Diane Keaton - 68 Years Old
Diane Keaton is another celebrity who has embraced her natural looks and has spoken openly about beauty in the modern world. In an interview with Allure she says that, as she grows older, she has learned to appreciate many of her features and find beauty within herself she had not previously noticed. With regard to altering her image through plastic surgery, Keaton says: “I haven't, but that doesn't mean I won't.” She has been open about grappling with her looks and with the difficulties of maintaining high self-esteem (a struggle we all have!). She says, “I’m glad there’s such a thing as great lighting in movies and a little refreshing in photos.” Say what she may, it's generally agreed that Keaton looks naturally beautiful for her 68 years.
