For the sake of fame and a fat paycheck, many actors have to move heaven and earth to be able to pull off a role they’re playing as successfully as possible. Matthew McConaughey had to shed off a frightening amount of weight for his role as an AIDS victim in Dallas Buyers’ Club. Renee Zellweger had to gain a copious amount of weight for her part as the feisty, yet awkward Bridget Jones. Of course, there are action roles where the actors put their lives and safety at risk as they perform death-defying stunts if they choose not to have stunt doubles. And then there are the romantic scenes.

For actors to be able to pull off a really great love scene, they have to have tons of chemistry and at least get along off-screen. Because imagine how difficult it is to have to kiss and pretend to make love in front of the cameras with someone you despise? Yet, even the friendliest of co-stars have attested to being quite uncomfortable to kissing each other. And some, like these actors, have had some downright negative things to say about their onscreen kissing partners.

14. Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst (for Spiderman)

One of the reasons the 2002 film Spiderman was so successful was because of the very infamous upside down kiss Spiderman (Tobey Maguire) bestowed on Mary Jane (Kirsten Dunst) in the pouring rain. It was romantic as hell, but audiences couldn’t help but wonder how difficult pulling it off actually was. According to a February 2014 article in The Vancouver Sun, Maguire was reluctant to do it because he already knew it was going to be a highly uncomfortable experience. Aside from hanging upside down and having the blood rush to his head, Maguire also had to deal with rainwater running up his nose.

13. Kate Hudson and Dane Cook (for My Best Friend’s Girl)

It was risky business for Dane Cook to call Kate Hudson, his co-star in My Best Friend’s Girl, his “worst onscreen kiss ever.” But that he did, as reported by ABC News in October 2014. But before Hudson’s fans get into a tizzy, it’s been implied that Cook said it all in good humor. According to Cook, Hudson would purposely eat a mouthful of onions right before a kissing scene just to get a rise out of him. And it worked, as he would always call her out on it, albeit in a friendly manner.

12. Shailene Woodley and Miles Teller (for The Spectacular Now)

The independent film The Spectacular Now opened to rave reviews at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. Shailene Woodley and Miles Teller had a good amount of chemistry working for them, but both revealed in interviews that they weren’t exactly that hot about kissing each other. In a July 2013 interview with Vulture, Teller claimed that Woodley would always take these Chinese herbal supplements before a kissing scene, making locking lips with her almost unbearable. Teller in turn, would gulp down Gatorade prior to filming, just to mock Woodley right back.

11. Kirsten Dunst and Brad Pitt (for Interview with the Vampire)

Kirsten Dunst received a lot of flak when she said that kissing Brad Pitt in the movie Interview with the Vampire was “disgusting,” as mentioned in a March 2013 article in Fox 411. Because who wouldn’t want to kiss as hot an actor as Pitt? Dunst apparently, though it’s understandable, given she was only 11 when she had to do it. Dunst said that Pitt was actually her first kiss and said she didn’t understand what all the fuss was about.

10. Tom Cruise and Thandie Newton (for Mission Impossible 2)

No one wants to be called a slobbery kisser, but unfortunately for Tom Cruise, he’s been called out for being such. According to his Mission Impossible 2 co-star Thandie Newton in a June 2008 article on Gawker, kissing Cruise was “slightly icky and sort of wet.” Newton went so far as saying that she’d always be mumbling and grumbling after filming each kissing scene because they had to do it numerous times before they got it right in the eyes of the director. And it didn’t help either that the temperature was uncomfortably scorching.

9. Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson (for Water For Elephants)

Reese Witherspoon has actually said outright that kissing Robert Pattinson was not appealing, to the chagrin of his thousands of fans. As reported by Hollywood Life in April 2011, Witherspoon told In Touch that at the time they had to film some romantic scenes, Pattinson was nursing a horrible cold, making kissing him absolutely disgusting. The actress went on to say that Pattinson was sniffling and had snot dribbling down his nose the whole time. She said she was quite disappointed because the experience was farthest from being sexy.

8. Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson (for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire)

She’s one of today’s hottest and most sought-after actresses in Hollywood, but apparently, Jennifer Lawrence is not the world’s greatest kisser, according to her Hunger Games co-star Josh Hutcherson. An October 2014 article in Elle stated that Hutcherson called Lawrence a “slobbery” kisser. He added that she had a bit of a dribble problem that she had to take care of. Whether Hutcherson said this in jest or if he was dead serious, it still doesn’t reflect well on the A-list actress.

7. Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1)

It seems like Josh Hutcherson isn’t the only one complaining about Jennifer Lawrence’s kissing. The actress’ other Hunger Games co-star Liam Hemsworth also had something not-too-favorable to say about Lawrence in the kissing department, as mentioned in a November 2014 report in US Weekly. While Hutcherson said Lawrence had a dribble problem, Hemsworth claimed that she had the worst-smelling breath, making the kissing experience “gross.” The two are good friends and Lawrence would purposely eat garlic or tuna and not brush her teeth before their kissing scene, just to rile up Hemsworth!

6. Angelina Jolie and James McAvoy (for Wanted)

She may be one of the most beautiful women in the world, but according to Angelina Jolie’s Wanted co-star James McAvoy, she’s far from perfect in the onscreen make out department. In a July 2008 report from Huffington Post, McAvoy claimed that his kissing scene with Jolie was awkward because he had just met her the day they filmed the scene. According to McAvoy, it was a case of, “Hey, how are you doing? I’m James, nice to meet you. Ok let’s do this scene.” So because there was no preamble whatsoever before jumping into the kiss, the experience was memorably awkward.

5. Leonardo DiCaprio and Virginie Ledoyen (for The Beach)

Despite the fact that the 2000 film The Beach was critically panned, it was a box office success, no doubt because of its star, Leonardo DiCaprio. And though the casting seemed great, DiCaprio’s co-star Virginie Leydoyen had less than favorable things to say about his kissing skills. According to an October 2014 report by Elle, Ledoyen said that she wouldn’t want DiCaprio as a lover, even though he was a nice person. Per Ledoyen, “There was no honest passion…I can’t even remember his kiss.”

4. Alyson Hannigan and Jason Segel (for How I Met Your Mother)

Our favorite couple in How I Met Your Mother was never really Ted and Robin, but rather forever-cheesy Marshall and Lily. They were always at their most adorable when they were being all sweet and cuddly. But according to an October 2014 article on Elle, Alyson Hannigan originally refused to make out with onscreen husband Jason Segel. The reason? He reeked and tasted of cigarette smoke. Rather than just brushing his teeth or popping a Tic Tac, Segel took the high road and decided to kick the habit completely.

3. Emma Watson and Rupert Grint (for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2)

Rumors circulated during the filming of the Harry Potter film franchise that two of its stars Emma Watson and Rupert Grint (who played Hermione and Ron, respectively) didn’t really get along off-screen. But whether they did or not, one thing was for sure: they definitely did not enjoy kissing each other onscreen. In an interview for Attitude magazine, Grint claimed that kissing Watson was kind of gross, as reported by Huffington Post in July 2011. He said it felt so unnatural, given they had been friends since he was nine, and it took around four takes to get it right.

2. Vanessa Hudgens and James Franco (for Spring Breakers)

In a March 2013 Yahoo Movies article, Vanessa Hudgens was quoted as saying, “Eeeew! I don’t want to kiss James! I’d rather kiss a girl than James Franco,” her co-star in the movie Spring Breakers. In the film, Hudgens had kissing scenes with both Franco and her female co-star Ashley Benson, saying she had no qualms about making out with Benson in their pool make-out scene. But kissing Franco? Hudgens deemed the experience her worst onscreen kiss ever.

1. Steve Carell and Dwayne Johnson (for Get Smart)

For a straight guy, perhaps it’s not so insulting when the person criticizing the way you kiss is another straight dude. Steve Carell and Dwayne Johnson starred together in the action comedy film Get Smart and shared a kissing scene. According to an October 2014 article in Elle, Johnson claimed that Carrell’s tongue felt like kitty litter, while his lips were like the bottom of a cat’s paw. Hilarious descriptions all said in good humor, no doubt! But two dudes who have to trade saliva can’t be appealing for either party.
